  4. There is a deeper problem.... on What Do You Do When CS Isn't Fun Any More? · · Score: 1

There's been a sense of hopelessness in the world for quite some time. The sense is that there is a 'great divide' between the haves and the have nots. The Internet and all its dot coms was looked upon as a savior, a hope that the playing field might level a bit. It didn't happen and that made things even worse. Couple this with all that's been going on since September, and many feel really bleak and depressed. I saw a story on the news last week that said use of antidepressants now is over double what it was in August.
It's almost as if a 'dark cloud' has settled over the world. People are going through the (day to day) motions but no one is really enjoying themselves any more. No one's really happy.
I wish I had the answers to fix this; I think that only time will. Also, the greedy (read:rich) need to become less greedy and more charitable.
I realize that this runs contrary to capitalism but I think that unrestrained capitalism is partly to blame for our funk. Maybe it's time that the pendulum swung back to the middle instead of between the two extremes of pure capitalism and pure socialism.

  11. Don't you people get it?? on Senate Trashes Civil Liberties; House to Vote Today · · Score: 1

There's a direct correlation between the amount of freedom in a country and the ability of terrorists to get around. Why? Terrorists are people too! See, since terrorists are a subset of humanity, if you take away EVERYONE'S freedom(s) by default you also take away the freedom of the terrorists. See, it's called throwing the baby out with the bathwater and our representatives sure soom to be good at doing it! The only problem is this: These criminals and assholes WANTED us to change our ways because of them. By defination, that's what's terrorism sets out to do. In their paranoid fear, our 'leaders' have played right into the hands of the terrorists! The really scary thing is that only one Senator out of hundreds of those in Congress is/was smart enough to figure this out. In other words: The United States of America is being run by a bunch of morons! Finally, here's a copy of a FAX I sent my U.S. Senators last night (for them to NOT read and reply to of course)...... Dear Mr. McCain and Kyl, I'm most disappointed in both of you for voting to take away part of my freedom today. Under the guise of "Uniting and Strengthening America" you have in reality weakened America. Our country is supposed to be the land of freedom and liberty not a place where fear reigns supreme. Unfortunately both of you seem to have succumbed to this fear and as a result our freedoms are less tonight. As Republicans, both of you have spent your careers keeping our government's foot off the throat of the people. Today's bill allows that foot to smother us. It seems that out of 100 of you, only Senator Feingold understands what I mean. That's too bad. Tonight, the only metaphor I can think of that fits is: "We have found the enemy, and it is us". Sadly, today's vote proves how true this is. Mr. Mc Cain, I heard you on the radio Wednesday morning talking about how proud you were of the people of Tucson and the unity they showed by making a huge human flag. What you seem to have missed is the reason they did: to show the world that people of the United States of America will NOT let criminals and terrorists get in the way of the freedom it's taken over 200 years to get! Unfortunately, both your votes Thursday shows them just the opposite, and that's sad. Sincerely,

  12. Sure they listen! (to the RIAA, Hollywood, etc.) on Is Your Elected Official Really Listening? · · Score: 1

They listen to the hand(s) that feed them! If you're Hilary Rosen or Bill Gates, I'll sure bet that you get a personal response. The question really is: do they listen to their constituants, ie: those that elected them? Again I say yes..to Sony, the National Association of Broadcasters, Microsoft, RCA, etc., etc. What people don't understand is that THOSE CORPORATIONS and others are responsible for their being elected!! No Congressman or Senator can get elected these days without television. Television costs LOTS OF MONEY. Anyone who thinks that the people elect them is sadly mistaken. The people only cast the votes. How they vote is determined by what they know about the person, ie: what the candidates' 'spin consultant' wants them to know. They learn about the candidate(s) on television. The bottom line: To get elected to national office you need TV. TV costs money.. The people and corporations that give them the money therefore, are the most important to them. These entities don't give away $$ to be charitable. They EXPECT a good 'bang for their buck'. Until things change, ie: campaign reform, limits on TV advertising and/or free advertising for all candidates, expect nothing to change. Since these laws have to be voted in by CONGRESS, expect NOTHING to change! We have found the enemy and it is us!

Why is this case 'not ripe' while the whole Napster/file sharing/copyright thing is??
I mean we haven't had ONE SINGLE challenge to the (probably unconstitutional) DMCA yet.
Why is the DMCA then considered 'ripe'?
Is the Internet (at a whole 5 years old as a 'mass medium') ripe?
Seems to me that 'the man' wants it both ways...They want the 'net to be considered 'mature' when it suits them..and 'not ripe' when it suits THEM!
We are in a very dangerous time....a time where the tables seem about to turn. A time where the Russians advise THEIR citizens to be wary of the U.S.! A time where most of the world (and many of our own citizens) fear and distrust OUR government. A time where law enforcement can propose whatever they want (Constitution/Bill of Rights be damned) and Congress and the President say: "yup, yup, yup". A time where citizens' rights are secondary to corporate greed.
Finally, the obscenity of terrorism isn't just what happened on September 11th, 2001. It's what has happened in Congress since then.
My only hope is that the citizens of our great country wake up to what their 'leaders' are really doing TO them! If not, then we're truly screwed.....

I had a five disk CD rom (1X) changer and even internet email/newsgroups/fido using a UUCP connection that dialed the ISP five times a day.
We called it Board 25 because of its access number: 252-5252. It was based just outside of Providence, RI in Massachusetts. The BBS was a local call from most of southern RI (thank you permissive dialing!). It had about 500 members and got at it's peak about 700 calls a day.
It covered it's expenses (mostly) and all profit went into equipment upgrades. A true labor of love. Chat was the most popular feature followed by email and the local town forums (moderated by people from the towns).
Alas, we shut it down four years ago today....a victim of AOL and the Internet. It sits collecting dust below a table in my partner's cellar. We will never dispose of it.

What this means is that if you burn someone, or try to screw them with a bad deal, or get GREEDY, they will walk away from your store, product, etc., etc. and get what they need elsewhere.

Hilslut, you're not going to "get your customers back" (with the possible exception of those who pay you for sex) by suing all their alternatives out of business. How you can do that is by giving them what they want at a reasonable price. It's called capitalism, babe and it means that those other whores down on the street have as much right to earn a buck for (bad) sex as you do.
