  1. A one way street. on Gates: Microsoft IP Finds Its Way Into Free Software · · Score: 2, Interesting

Microsoft speaking on copying others' features seems a bit absurd. Microsoft has made a living off other peoples' innovations. Now the only reason suits like the SCO vs Linux haven't come up with other OS's is because we can't see whats under the hood. Now, in fairness, maybe Linux developers have a right to view the OS code of any accusers of IP infrengement to make sure they haven't done the same thing. Such a rule might also make a company think twice about filing frivilious lawsuits to tarnish the reputation of open source OS's.

  6. A big chat room on Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided Ships · · Score: 1
The opinions I've heard from people have been in beta are that it is an elaborate chat room for star wars junkies. As an everquest player I understand how online games function. What I have been hearing is that while the game is amazingly detailed and beautiful, it lacks the dynamics to have an exciting 'end game'. (The end game is the portion of the game where people who really commit to the game play. It is people who have maximized their skills and are killing the hardest mobs in the game.) It sounds like starwars does not have much content at this level, (which is required to keep people who play the game frequently happy).

So what the game may end up being is a place where casual gamers can go to chat about the day and to relax and kill a few things, but that the game is not ready for people to play to win. There are many other reasons people feel the game is not ready for release. You can read some of then at the thread on the subject HERE.

Second, AOL might as well cut thier losses and just declare some license that they can live with. The software is wild, the source is wild, and it's too good got people just to sit down and pretend that it doesn't exist. It's going to be developed by the outside world whether they like it or not. The best they can do is either let it develop illegally or impose a license they can accept on it.

The gestures are great and not having to move your hand to move your mouse is very nice. It's definately expensive, but it was my graduation to myself. Anyway, I think it's great. In everquest, no GM (game master) accounts can be accessed outside of the local network, (ie, all developers and GM's have to be in the building to do their job). This was after EQ had some of the same types of problems. (In eq, someone hacked the home computer of one of the lead developers and use that information to access high level options.)

Second, the whole "don't expect anything to be hidden on the client" is completely true. In everquest, showeq has managed to recrack what they believe was an uncrackable encryption, (encryption then compressions removed the original vulnerability of the encryption technique). Many programs 'sniff' the EQ key on the windows machine including programs such as macroquest. These programs also use the offsets to change values in game and automate movements.

Basically, when something is at stake, people are going to try their hardest to bypass the rules. And unlike many systems, MMoG's must be online all the time, must have a client that has some information, and can have only low level compromises in small numbers and zero high level compromises, otherwise no-one will play.

Ok, so a quality version is pirated. These are the same people who released 4 of the animatrix shorts for free? I thought they would have realized that their real fans want the dvd. The film has grossed roughly 350 in the box office so I find it hard to say their being hit there, (didn't the first film gross about that in it's entire run?) And the people downloading to get a copy at home are most likely either teenagers who 1: aren't (or shouldn't be for an R movie) their target audience, and 2: are likely to find a way around buying it anyway.

The majority of their target are probably 20's-30's, working males. Many of them downloading it are probably only filling the gap between when they no longer want to see it in the theater and when they can get the DVD. I did the same thing for LotR:FotR and LotR:TTT. I downloaded the movie, but the second that dvd comes out I"m getting the extended edition. Why? I want to watch the movie now, but I want the actual DVD when I can get it. Will I download Matrix Reloaded? Maybe. Will I buy Animatrix, matrix:reloaded and matrix when they come out on dvd? Of course. (And yes I realize matrix is out, I want to get it w/ reloaded though.)

350 million in a couple of weeks is not "'debilitating' for the industry no matter how they slice the pie.

But hey, at least bittorrent is getting some advertising in.
