Puts on bad German accent (like on the one from Hogan's Heroes):
"Dear troops. There iz a threat to us out thar called Leeenox. It is insidious; it may be in your very server room right now! Go out! eradicate the Leeenox Scum! Use our informants to bring zee traitors to heel!
"If you forward or leek thiz email, you will be summarily sent to the Eastern Front!"
I use this set up as a lo-cal Linux setup on my Thinkpad, a Pentium 133 32 megs of RAM:
Xfce is my desktop. Kinda CDE ish but it is fast, has built in GNOME support and functional file browser.
AbiWord for word processing. I don't use spreadsheets that much so I go with Gnumeric if I do.
Mozilla is my browser.
Postillion for mail, along with pine.
The GIMP, of course.
I don't play alot of games so there is only a pac-man clone, space invaders, and of couse, Doom.
All this runs really well.
I use Mac OS X on my Mac and I love it. I think it is the best Unix-based OS for my needs. I love the slick Aqua interface and the rock solid command line goodness underneath.
I also use Linux on my IBM laptop and I must say the two are aimed at vastly different markets. There is nothing wrong with this; each has their strengths and weaknesses and I use (and love) both.
Be will be missed. I have BeOS R5 on my old IBM ThinkPad (Pentium 133/32 megs RAM) and it flies. It is rock solid and reads my PCMCIA Ethernet Card without drivers.
If you look at BeBits.com, you'll see new apps are being released for BeOS all the time. Be will live on. I love using AbiWord on it and transfering those files seemlessly to my Gnu-Darwin box.
Two things I'll never use my money on: Microsoft products and sex but now I am rethinking the sex part!
There are a host of other options in Linux; AbiWord, Koffice...
You are taking a $19.95 "free" update and making it a $129 peice of software (The full cost of Mac OS X). Any company with an ounce of brains is going to pounce all over you for it, I mean they are losing $110 on the deal.
That said, I wondered why the 10.1 update wasn't a free download.
It was great day when FreeCiv was ported to Darwin/Mac OS X. I love FreeCiv; its eye candy lite, solid and playable. The music in Civ III is a Kenny G Greatest Hits parade.
I'm sure I'll play Civ III when it comes to the Mac in January but I wont be in a rush to do so.
When the leader of fink resigned, it was devastating; he started it, ntured it and it really was his baby. The rest of us got together via email and worked out new leadership.
In short, announce your intention to move on and see who steps forward.
It's sad to see this kind of thing happen. On one hand, its always nice to see "unpublished" material by your favorite author, on the other its explotation. Sure there might be some scholarly value here but mostly its foir the money. Let dead writers rest!
His "Planet Of The Apes" is a brilliantly constructed social satire. Read it if you haven't because it bears little resemblance to the movies it inspired. It's a true work of genius.
Other authors: Frank Herbert, Jack Williamson.
Don't Networks broadcast their shows free over the air? Don't people fast forward through commercials they taped anyway? or mute it when it comes on TV? or surf to another channel during commercials?
I usually give you credit for have some good brain power but "Something like this looks like a great idea to me." Are you nuts? It might be a good idea if you want to serve breakfast in it or use it as a model in a space movie but jeez!
I actually tried talking him into going with all Macs but they had alot of PC hardware they didn't want to waste, hence Linux.
As for the servers, I think he was impressed by the GUI tools and generous licensing that came with Mac OS X server.
My friend's company of fourty two people just moved all their desktops to Linux and their servers to Mac OS X. It took only four hours to do, which was amazing. The move from Windows NT/2000 is projected to save about $12,000/year in costs.
He moved from Word to AbiWord, which was pretty painless. They are happy.
I havew a spiffy UI on top of Unix anyway but I amw atching this with interest, for my aging ThinkPad , which chokes on KDE/GNOME.
Will Sun ever port this office suite to Mac OS X since OpenOffice isn't making any progress?
No, the program seems to be Windows only, according to LimeWire.
You missed one: > It's doomed to fail

Both Gnu-Darwin anf Fink have easy to install FreeCiv packages. You need X Windows, too.

Yellow Dog Linux 2.1 works fine.
KDE runs on most *BSD variants, except Darwin.
My division of Prudential Insurance (Can't say where, sorry) uses OS/2 on all its desktops here, that's 3,000 machines. Nifty OS!
