Instead of running VNC why not run X over ssh; a megabit would be fine to run applications (wouldn't exactly run my WM over 1mbit)...
VNC wastes a lot of bandwidth transferring stuff that could be done by the local workstation (colors, shapes etc.)...

EFnet didn't crawl to its knees if you hit it with 20 mbps; but if you hit all the efnet servers (and yes there's a lot of them these days). You'll probably be able to get parts of the efnet to crawl... Remember this is a chat-network hosted for fun and not for profit...
SCO on the otherhand surprises by not having more than 150 mbit, consider this is a huge organisation and not having more than 150 mbit kinda surprises me... Remember The Gathering (the worldst largest computerparty) was DDoSed at over 900 mbit/s (they also had a 1 gbit link, not uncommon these days).
    150 mbit... that's just 100-150 high-end xDSL home-computers, or put in a few 10/100mbit college-computers and you could scratch 30-50 xDSL-customers...

Have you taken a look at 3ware ?
They make RAID controllers with RAID5 support, all based on ATA-IDE drives, the biggest controller supporting up to 12 drives.
They also support hotswap and all the other goodies you'd expect of a SCSI-RAID-system, but at the price of IDE ;-). (NO I do NOT work for them, nor do I resell them, just another happy customer).
There's hardware support for win/linux/freebsd (Not sure about Mac, but I've tried it under the 3 mentioned and it worked like a charm).

I wonder if you know what After Effects does sir, as there are different uses for Final Cut *, Shake and After Effects.
After Effects is actually what the name implies a program to add Effects after it's been edited (or even while). Final Cut is a linear editor, while After Effects is a visual effects program. The do wastly different things.
Shake on the other hand is not unsimilar to AE, but the price tag on it ($5,000) just prices it out of the competition. That's also why they marked it as a digital composition tool, aimed at filmproducers rather than the average joe just wanting to put some flashy-text in his average home-video.
