"I jumped on to ebay and bought the best condition 40gb Diamondplus 8 w/ pictures that I could."
I did the same for a coworker a while ago. Found a drive with the closest firmware I could, swapped the logic boards, and recovered the data. Swapped the boards back, got a replacement drive under warranty, and now I have 2 drives for the price of 1.
There are undoubtedly people who will recommend against doing this, claiming you can make the problem worse, permanently corrupting the data, etc. That may be true in some cases, but for non-critical data, a $40 logic board swap for a *good* chance of data recovery beats a $1500 data recovery service any day of the week.
"Better than my boss; who starts one project and finishes none."
Better than my boss, who sits around reading the Wall Street Journal all day, inventing useless projects to distract us from actual ones, and preceeds to us how we should do them.
"20% overrated? Was the act of putting it on Slashdot so people can read it overrated or was the article itself overrated"
Some might consider it karma whoring, which is stupid if you really think about it. It's not like its money or something with actual value were talking about. Karma is capped at 50 anyhow (oops, I mean "excellent"), and if you post intelligently, I don't see how you wouldn't hit the max in a short time anyhow.
Mod me down if you like. My karma's been maxed for a long time and I dont really give a damn anyway.
Oh, and as a side note to clueless moderators.... Don't moderate something "redundant" just because it appears in a thread further down the page. Look at the timestamp.
"Can someone confirm that a software update could not be used to add MPEG-4 support to the HD Tivo?"
MPEG decoding in the DTivo boxes is done in hardware, so a software update isn't possible. There are plently of $1000 HD Tivo owners pissed off about it.
"OK, it was close to a year ago... that Eric Raymond's tirade on the unfriendly status of configuring the CUPS printing system on Linux was published.... and nothing seems to have changed -- the admin items for adding a printer are exactly as Eric described them back then -- unclear, confusing, and no where near as friendly as their Win* equivalents."
Well, so much for ESR tirades motivating the development of user-friendly software. Anyone else have any ideas?
If the device requires less, it will be fine. You don't need to put a bunch of extra load on the power supply for it to work right, unless you're just trying to heat your lab with expensive resistors.
Not true. Most switching power supplies specify a minimum load in order for them to regulate properly. If you don't have the proper load, you will see the voltage regulation problem the grandparent mentioned.

"I suppose it's the same reason I'm setting up network bootable terminals in my house"
To impress chicks, of course.
Summarizing the Bible's easy: Nothing really matters but be polite and considerate anyway.
Or, in other words:
"Be excellent to each other, and, PARTY ON, DUDES!"
"I curse you with the theme music for Gilligans Island, The Odd Couple, and last but not least Sanford and Son"
And just to be fair, for the other half of the slashdotters who don't have those songs permanently embedded into their brains, here you go:
Gilligans Island
Odd Couple
Sanford and Son
Hope the site survives a slashdotting.
"Errh.. Hacking is illegal?"
Perhaps you are confusing "hacking" with "unauthorized access to a computer system"
OMG, WTF? ICURAAJ. YNH.
"Is Something Awful making the leap to the small screen thanks to G4TV?"
-1, Redundant.
G4 is already something awful
Yes you, solar panel washer martian dude.
How about a little help over here.
"Just see if you can get some time on CTU's machines."
If they won't give you the time, hack in through the backdoor.
I think it's SHIFT-TAB-F4. Or wait, is that to abort the nuclear powerplant meltdown.
"I imagine a decade of steaming (sic) would takes its toll on anybody"
Whenever I have to run Realplayer, the word "steaming" often comes to mind.

"What is it with these customer-oriented companies that forget where their money is coming from?"
Look up the words "Monopoly" and "Oligopoly"
Short answer is, they dont *have* to care. You want them more than they need you.

"When do we draw the line between normal computer use and invasion of privacy?"
When information is reported without your consent.
"occupant of 17A was eating peanuts, doing inflight magazine crossword and had dirty underwear"
See.... Bill Cosby's mom *was* right.
"I you're going to post a article for publication" ...and a grammar check wouldn't kill you either.
So, do we like the French now?
Should I return my Freedom Fries and exchange them for French Fries?
"Grep the source for GPL code!"
Yup, just as I thought. It's just Linux with a boot screen that says "Hacked by Chinese!"
"So nobody is allowed to complain that something is lacking? They have to fix it themselves?"
Of course not. ESR raised alot of issues and even got some positive response from the CUPS developers. Good for him.
But the Ask Slashdot submitter shouldn't expect developers to fall all over themselves just because ESR says so.

"...and not only can any military board you, they can legally just sink you if they feel like it. "
A whole new way to sink your competition.
"However, just agreeing on a common standard does not collusion make."
Right. The first step is to hammer out the details of the DVD format.
Fixing the prices on the DVDs will have to wait until next year.
Ummmm... so, you're just wasting power then
Approx 20W. Not a big deal.

Funny how a week ago, this story would have made perfect sense.
