NotePad in XP has major bugs not present in earlier versions, such as when you save a file, the current Word Wrap margins become actual line breaks. The saved file is fine but the open document now has hard CR/LFs in it, so if you save it a second time without closing and reopening the file, the file is corrupted.
IANSIExpert but doesn't Windows load the SI VXDs even if you aren't running a debugging session? It may even be something simpler, like they are checking for the presence of the files on your system.
No, or more accurately, only if it was continously scanning bar codes.
While reader devices like this do speak the protocol, they are intended not to interfere with normal keyboard operation, and thus disconnect themselves from the data line when not active. When you scan something, it cuts the real keyboard loose, attaches itself, transmits the scanned data as if you were typing it out, then disconnects and reattaches the upstream device. This also allows you to A) stack multiple readers (ie. barcode + creditcard swiper), and B) use these devices without an OS dependant driver (the:Cuecat driver is just to "decrypt" the scambling they hoped would prevent their use as cheap general-purpose barcode readers).
Although, one could probably break the 'cat open and cut the appropriate select line on the 4066 (the switch chip) and rig it to keep the internal circuits permanently switched in.
In fact, that's how I pitched it to the networks exactly - I said "I'd like to do a show
where I rid the world of all these fevered egos that are tainting our collective unconcious" and the guy at CBS said "Will there be tittie?"
I said "Uh, sure - I dunno - sure."
Boom! A check falls in my lap and I'm a producer; I never knew it was that easy. All these years I've been trying to write scripts and characters and plots, stories that have meaning... "Will there be tittie?" "Sure" - boom! I'm a producer now.
"Where've you been all our lives, boy? We've been lookin for you in Hollywood. What're these titties gonna do?"
"Um... jiggle?"
"You're a fuckin genius - give him another check! I can't write enough checks for you; you've answered our prayers in Hollywood. Jigglin' titties, who woulda thunk of it?"
Well, there's no accounting for spammers' tastes. Judging from some of the spams I've seen, females with enlarged cocks are apparently pretty popular with these folks...
The eavesdropping IS an "emergency call", at least as far as the system is concerned. They tap the car by ordering the provider to activate the "stolen vehicle" mode.

Christmas lights are actually rated around 3 volts, with a bypass resistor in parallel to keep the string lit if one burns out. Enough 3V lights are placed in series to soak up the whole 120V, though as each one burns out, the voltage drop decreases, making the rest burn brighter. This is why the instructions (yes, they have those) say to replace any dead bulbs ASAP to prevent fire hazard/reduced bulb life/etc.
I've been a NetFlix subscriber since 8/2000, and only once have I been sent an alternate title instead of the next item on my queue. Maybe I don't rent enough Hollywood Mega-BlockBuster Films and new releases for this to matter.
Slashcode didn't throw up a warning like "you've already moderated in this thread - it will be lost if you post to it" or something? Sounds like an improvement could be made here. I know the instructions tell you this will happen, but obviously accidents do happen; while repeated "are you sure?" messages tend to get annoying as software tries to protect people from themselves, the warning could be disabled in one's profile...
While I can understand where this poster might have gotten a bad (and IMO incorrect, as I disagree with certain conclusions the reviewer draws) impression of this book from the summary, but 'I haven't RTFA but am going to shoot down what I suspect it is anyway" doesn't seem that mod-worthy to me...
I agree with the generalized part of his opinion (and the points Bradbury makes in the linked article) but it doesn't exactly seem on-topic given that it's being applied to the book under review with only circumstantial evidence.
The schematic also does not include any tunnel diodes (which figure in a key plot point).
That said, I read the story awhile back when it was first announced on K5, and thought it was very good. I would have liked to see some more alternate POV from people who did like The Change, but I realize that would compromise the moral of the story.
No, seriously.

Wasn't that the whole point of IngSoc?
