X-10 has a really cool remote that I have found to work quite well. It's called the Learning Super-Remote. There are two versions, make sure you get the learning one. This baby has three communication methods built in, IR send like any remote, IR recieve so you can point the original remote at it and program functions, and a radio transmitter so you can control your X-10 Firecracker modules with it. I have my whole apartment wired, so not only is my whole entertainment system controlled by my remote, my lights and popcorn maker are too. Isn't technology grand?

No, If I remember right, red hat inlcudes some non-free third party software in their "official" distro. I am not sure if that is all kept on a seperate CD or not, but it would be wise to contact RH directly before burning the official CD, you might end up getting burned yourself when one of those third party vendors finds out you've been pirating their software, intentionally or no

I also agree with this idea... if you are anywhere near the Philadelphia Area, try to contact a place called Nonprofit Technology Resources. They refurb old computers to give to underpriveledged schools and kids, it's a great cause, and the people are nice. I personally very much enjoyed spending a few days with them last year helping give something back

While I don't have a ton of bandwidth to throw around, I do have a dedicated DSL connection and would be willing to host a few of the smaller projects that have become homeless after this incident, if two conditions are met. First, I would have to clear this with my DSL provider because I don't want to voilate my contract. Second, I would want to hear from Chris Gann himself confirming the good intentions of whomever I might be hosting. If you are one of those who lost a home, contact me at jamie at jamie.ufies.org and we can discuss the feasability of doing this. A disclaimer: I can make no guarantee of stability or availability... this machine is my personal box that I use for other things like quake and school work. If you can find another place to host your project I strongly suggest doing so. If, however, you are totally without options, I might be able to help out, if only temporarily.

Correct me if I am wrong, but from the gist of the other posts it seems to me like part of the memory limitation has something to do with the processor. Does that mean by having an SMP setup with dual processors you would effectively double the amount of RAM your system could use?

From what I hear, it's illegal in the states because there's so much caffeine in it. It was mighty tasty too boot. Anyone out there care to start a service to allow those of us who can't buy it at the local 7-11 to get some of this stuff? Would be mighty handy for those late night coding sessions...

I have felt the effects of this first hand many times. For instance, the University I attend uses word doc's for presentation of some projects. I also have a roommate who wanted to install linux, but didn't because the office support wasn't there. While there were perfectly good alternative office programs for Gnome, they weren't able to read M$ files, and that's important. Luckily, things are improving in this area somewhat. For instance, Gnumeric can now import Excel files, although I don't know how much support is available. I for one think it would be excellent if M$ had to open up the office file formats... it would be a huge win for the OSS community. For the time being, though, I will still keep windoze on my laptop, just for those times when I am required to read Office docs.

Since everyone in here is focusing on AI for computer games, I figured I would throw in my.02 on console games. It very well may be a lot of hype, but from what I hear the AI in the new N64 game Perfect Dark will be fantastic. Do a search on it and check out some of the info... seems pretty promising to me. Then again I think Goldeneye 007 was the best game any console has ever seen. Multiplayer rocked!

I live in the philadelphia area, and signed up for an SDSL setup from Flashcom about two months ago. Well yesterday I finally got all wired, but now my DSL modem is apparantly timed out, but it got as far as to connect to the central office and download software (sort of like flashing your BIOS). They claim to be able to have the problem fixed by tonite, but then again two months ago they claimed they could have it installed in 10 working days.

I believe you are taking the argument a bit too far here. If I were to follow your logic, I could easily say that it is unacceptable to distribute source as printed out text files, because the coders surely do not work on the code in hard copy. There is a difference between code obfuscation and just changing formats to transfer a document. If I convert from digital to analog format to send a document over my modem, is that obfuscating the code or merely transporting it?
