  1. I'm skeptical of Linked In on Linked In Or Out? · · Score: 1

My past jobs have come from either a technical recruiter spotting my resume, or a direct application by me. I'm very skeptical of sites like Linked In. It's difficult to measure how much they help, and all people give as evidence is anecdotes.

I am proud of myself for having *reduced* my online profile in recent years. When I was younger, I posted some embarrassing material online that was linked to my real name. It still is out there, but it's buried under many other results, and you often need my middle initial or personal email address to find it. Now when you search on my "first_name last_name", you will mostly see *other* people named "first_name last_name". And I don't have an especially common last name. You have to do a fair bit of digging to find my embarrassing remarks now. Thank goodness.

Privacy is real. Privacy is valuable. If other people want to give up theirs, by all means, go ahead. But I'm keeping (and restoring) mine.

  2. Re:The opposite problem on Linked In Or Out? · · Score: 1

Exactly. I have had to perform Hadoukens in interviews because employers don't believe I'm Ryu. With an online presence, employers can see beforehand that I am competent with the surge fist (where I thrust my palms forward, sending a surge of spirit energy or ki flying towards the opponent).

  3. Overstating his case. Death of big media, maybe. on Cory Doctorow Calls Death To Music, Movies, Print · · Score: 1

All that we're seeing is *big* media having trouble. There's still interest in and value in the underlying techniques. People are still going to read newspapers on their daily train commute because right now e-readers are still expensive and glitchy. We're only seeing problems with monopolistic, high capacity mass media, not media in general.

  4. Other trackers will be overloaded? No. on Researchers Warn of Possible BitTorrent Meltdown · · Score: 1

Other *public* trackers might be overloaded, but meanwhile anyone who knows what they're doing will already be on an invite-only tracker.

And don't forget that this has happened before. Remember when Suprnova died? Other sprang up in its place.

Loose accreditation? I thought that was the cause in the first place!

    Heh, good point.

Oh, I doubt it. You can still keep a resume posted and scan the replies to it once in awhile. You can still keep up with current financial news online. This isn't the 19th century. :-)

True. China also enjoys having a buffer between itself and US-backed South Korea.

  10. Not just iTunes, other media on Apple's Terms No Longer Allow ITMS Purchases Outside of US · · Score: 1

I have a relative who's retired and who has been living in various developing countries while he travels. It wasn't until he started doing this that I realized how much of a PITA that the Internet can be for people outside the US and North America. There are all kinds of artificial, often copyright-related barriers. If you want to get TV shows at Hulu.com, tough luck. Need to download games via Direct2Drive.com? Tough. Any kind of media is hard to come by, to the point where he and I are willing to put up with the outrageous customs charges when I ship him DVDs.

  11. Perhaps I'm showing my age, but... on Console Download Speeds Tested · · Score: 1

I still haven't wrapped my mind around broadband-connected consoles. Today's consoles look so much like computers. When I was a kid, network gaming meant having your friends crowd around an NES.

That said, I plan on getting one for my next gaming platform. I'm tired of messing with system requirements and installs on the PC. I also like the idea of using a wireless controller, so I can lounge when gaming, taking a break from the "hunched over keyboard and mouse" posture that dominates my work week.
