  1. Availability? on Researchers Devise AI System To Reduce Noise in Photos (venturebeat.com) · · Score: 2

I'm curious how the results stack up against commercial options like in Lightroom or Aperture. If these can reduce noise without softening the image, I'd be very interested in getting it.

  2. I question whether this will do much to slow down those who follow the conspiracy theories. They actively seek out crazy plots to explain their distorted realities and will either move towards private websites that dish up these juicy rumors du jour or will dismiss any YouTube evidence as "evidence" and think the men in black helicopters have taken over the site. At the end of the day, we seek out sites that confirm our view of the world. We have news agencies that cater to the spectrum of political beliefs that help confirm to you that Obama is a Kenyan or that Trump is a Russian puppet. If you believe 9/11 was a government plot, I doubt you will take the time to read an NYT article to refute it, even if it is offered on the same page.

  3. Indian Development on World's Largest Mobile Phone Factory Set To Open in India (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

I am glad to hear that more manufacturing is coming to India. I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a push by American companies into India for inexpensive manufacturing over the high hurdles to get into China. I hope this Samsung development will help spur further economic progress into the area.

  4. Re:The Tightest DRM Leash & Choke Chain on Google Is Planning a Game Platform That Could Take On Xbox and PlayStation (kotaku.com) · · Score: 2

It also has the disadvantage that if the network goes away, so does your ability to play the games. I can pull out an original NES, and with a little effort, hook it up to a TV and play the old games. If Google loses interest in gaming in a year or two, you're sunk.

  5. RIP AIX on Finally, It's the Year of the Linux... Supercomputer (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

I'll always have fond memories for AIX. It was my first UNIX I played with and learned. My dad worked for IBM and got an older RS/6000 to bring home. Firing that thing up with its stacks of external hard drives was like powering on the space shuttle. That experience allowed me to be the first in my college dorm to have a Linux box up and running. Good times.

  6. Retro Clients on AIM Has Been Resurrected. Kind Of. (vice.com) · · Score: 1

My biggest question is when will we resurrect the ICQ beta clients and MSN Messenger? Nothing takes me back to my college days more than the thought of hearing the ICQ sound from behind doors as I walked down the hall. Everyone was too lazy to get up and ask each other face-to-face if they were doing dinner.

  7. Herpes Vaccine on Alzheimer's Link To Herpes Virus In Brain, Say Scientists (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

Perhaps this work might spur increased funding into the herpes vaccine effort. It has been awhile since I last heard there was a potential candidate for testing. It would have to obviously cover multiple strains than just the STD of course.

  8. Nice ADA Feature on GNOME Web Browser is Adding a Reader Mode (omgubuntu.co.uk) · · Score: 1

This will be a nice feature for those with vision impairments. My mother is blind in one eye and only has limited vision in the other. If this can increase website text to be really large and boost the contrast, it would be a great help.

  9. Which Screens? on AMC is Creating a Rival Service To MoviePass (axios.com) · · Score: 1

I'm curious if the offer is restricted to just the standard screens or if the IMAX and Dolby theaters are included. If so, I'm grabbing my wallet now.

  10. Re:Toss one on Stage on New IBM Robot Holds Its Own In a Debate With a Human (nbcnews.com) · · Score: 1

You obviously don't fact check opinions like "I think abortion is morally wrong", but can fact check things like "Abortion clinics are killing live-born babies" and other outrageous claims politicians have made in the past. Will it be perfect? No. But it can be a lot better than the current debates where commentators have to spend the hours following the debate debasing all the falsehoods asswaged in it.

  11. Toss one on Stage on New IBM Robot Holds Its Own In a Debate With a Human (nbcnews.com) · · Score: 1

I look forward to when a computer can be on stage at a presidential debate to refute all the bullshit they spout. "That's not correct, Dave, according to 384 scientific articles..." Fact checking in real time on stage would make the debates much more watchable.

  12. I've always wanted a machine to stand over me and announce when I'll die in a robotic voice. Does it have robotic arms to hold a pillow over my mouth if it predicts wrong?

  13. Are there reasons why the cost would be more in South Africa or Dublin? I could understand the argument in that they may not be as much demand (subscribers) in SA to spread the costs across, but Dublin? Installs should be relatively easy (no major geographic barriers).

  14. Re:Second HQ on Seattle Repeals Tax That Upset Amazon (apnews.com) · · Score: 1

Thanks Jeff, I'm in one of the cities as well. Whenever there's been a slow news day, it seems HQ2 is again in our local news. I had hoped that we'd know, good or bad, by now, but it seems to be similar to the reality shows where they prolong the final decision for dramatic emphasis :-/

  15. Second HQ on Seattle Repeals Tax That Upset Amazon (apnews.com) · · Score: 1

Offtopic, but is there any word on when they will announce their second HQ city? They announced way back in January the 20 finalists, but have been pretty mum since. All the armchair quaterbacking and guessing is becoming tiresome and I'd wish Amazon would just announce the damn city already.

  16. It will be interesting to see what this does to the duopoly enjoyed right now between Nvidia and AMD. It would be nice to see some price pressure on the market and new tech coming out. We've been in this two-horse race pretty much since the late 90s/early 00s.

  17. Re:Taking suggestions? on Microsoft Addresses Pressure From Developer Community, Promises To Rename GVFS · · Score: 1

Gah, you beat me out. I had just come here to post Filey McFileFace. Great minds and all that jazz...

  18. Kickstarter for Cars on Tesla Faces Accelerating Rate of Model 3 Refunds (recode.net) · · Score: 1

I'd be curious how many of those cancellations were just people plopping down $1,000 because of all the media hype around the new car but were never that serious about buying one. Once their slot is up and they have to decide to move forward with the order or not, they opt to refund out.

  19. Useful sites on StumbleUpon Is Shutting Down After 16 Years of Service (techcrunch.com) · · Score: 1

That's too bad, I did find them of relative use in sending weekly emails of sites I'd like. They weren't always useful, and sometimes had repeats, but I found more sites I'd never known about this way. I hope an alternative comes around.

  20. Car Development on Uber's Self-Driving Car Saw Pedestrian 6 Seconds Before Fatal Strike, Says Report (tucson.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

It goes to show that development of the next generation of self-driving or autonomous cars has to be undertaken by companies heavily driven by pedestrian and passenger safety. It seems like an engineering failure was partly to blame here when the car was aware of the pedestrian, but neither alerted the driver nor attempted to stop or redirect its path. A tech company masquerading as a car company strikes me as the exact conditions that could lead to this failure.

  21. Black List on Cyber Firms Warn on Suspected Russian Plan To Attack Ukraine (reuters.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

At what point can we just sever as much internet traffic out of Russia to the world? I know I'm massively oversimplifying that effort, but should there not be some sort of 'death penalty' against countries engaging in cyber warfare? China and some other smaller nations would likely keep connections which would make it hard to filter between Russian and Chinese communications, but any directly from Russia could be subject to either massive slowdown or complete blocking.

  22. I've subscribed to Google Music (or Play Music, or whatever its called now). I like using it to listen to music at work as it isn't blocked by the firewall like some other services are, and it is handy to find and listen to new music I'd pass by if I had to buy it first. But, I'm not sure how interested I'll be if this convenience goes away and the price is raised. It seems everytime you find something useful within Google's universe, they decide to ax it for something worse. How many iterations of messenger and music services are we on from them?

  23. I would have hoped that not securing your data and allowing customer data to get into the hands of who knows who would be worth at least $1 per account affected. No need to invest in proper IT security if you have the cash on hand.

  24. I'm less concerned whether the "autopilot" was the cause of the crash than the fact Tesla knows all about your driving habits. I think it is super creepy if the car company knows when your hands are on the wheel or not.

  25. Twitter: For Bots, By Bots on Two-Thirds of Tweeted Links Come From Bots, Report Says (cnet.com) · · Score: 2

Twitter these days is such a mess, they should have the tagline, "For Bots, By Bots". I'm at a loss on how to fix it (if it can be saved), but Twitter is in need of real help.
