    So are people who buy a Merc getting ripped off? It's all about what's important to you. You obviously go for the best bang for the buck, others go for what they feel is better to use.

    I just got a 2.4 Ghz Emachine with 256MB of RAM, CDRW, and an 80GB hard drive for $450.

    You can pick up a super-charged V8, with auto, air-con, elec windows etc, for under $20,000 these days. But you don't see Merc, BMW, or Porche getting worried and lowering their prices do you?

    Specs aren't everything, quality still counts for a lot of people.

    If it does use an IR filter, then it just whacks a plain IR filter infront of the CCD. it doesn't change the small colour filters on each pixel on the CCD. It's completely different. Infact, I'm wondering why Sony would bother to add an IR filter. Sure, remove the IR blocking filter, but the idea here is to let in the most light, not take IR shots.

    Question: Does GNU/Linex stop you from installing non-free sotware? No, it just doesn't provide options by default. There are no restrictions here. However, having software that isn't free, may mean having restrictions.

    Hell, I'm far from an free software zealot, but I still think your point is just silly and missleading.

    Now that this LinEx is around, it seems Debian is no longer good enough for His Holiness.

    No, it seems that he's not a newbie from the windows world, and knows what he's going to install, so he won't install any non-free software that comes with debian (or atleast he'll know what's what).

    A newbie on the other hand, may end up installing non-free stuff, and be unaware of it, because they might not know what they are doing. So logicaly, only a distibution that contains only free software is an option for someone who may not know what they are doing, and if your goal is to only install free software.

    Shouldn't this be obvious? But I spose being anal about things--like you think RSM is being--is easier than being thoughtful and objective.

    Yes, govenments aren't the most effiecent places, but they have less of a focus on profit, and more of a responsibility for the people.

    The proof is in the pudding of course, and his point was that things were better when the gov was involved. You seem to give the impression that the problems has always existed, and that involving the govenment isn't going to solve the problems. The problems were introduced by the commercial companies, after the gov stop being involved.

    How on earth this got modded up in a place like /. is beyond me. Obviously there are some components in OE that Outlook uses. Obviously, the people at MS know that, and will be smart enough to include whatever was needed into Outlook, or the OS it's self.

    It may not take a couple of hours a week to download and run the patches, but certianly takes a couple of days to re-install the OS if a patch doesn't play well with something. Maybe it doesn't happen very often in the real world, but once it happens to you personaly, it makes one very edgy about running any patch or SP unless it's absolutly critcal, and it's affecting you.

    Unbased?

    The reason why I haven't installed the patch yet is that I'm still only on SP2. And it needs SP3 or SP4. After the hell I went through installing SP2, I though it would be wiser to risk a virus, than stuff-up a perfectly good installation by attempting to install another SP and fuck it all up again.

    Of course, it looks like I'll have to do it now anyway. If the SP causes the same or less damage as the virus, I'll consider it a succesful update.

    *sigh* Apple aren't perfect either, but I'm glad I'm saving up for G5.

    Turns out aside from DDOS'ing Microsoft, this worm is pretty harmless.

    Not exactly, Mine didn't shutdown at all, but I got errors (svhost or something stopping etc), it must have affected FireBird writing to the disk, because I lost most of my user profile (only the important stuff like bookmarks, passwords, cookies; url history was still there). I assume this is partly FireBirds fault though.

    I think it would have been clearer if he had said something like; that which does not kill you, and you make a full recovery from, can only make you stronger. But of course, that doesn't have the same ring to it.

    Instead of pestering someone else to port Macromedia Flash, why don't you learn how to use SVG.

    Uh, Flash and SVG are completly different things, catering to completely different needs. If you had any idea what you were talking about, you would never have compared them...Apples and oranges. SVG is for (mostly) static vector graphics in HTML pages. Flash is an interactive, animated, vector-graphics-based plug-in. There is a bit of cross over, but they are still very different from each other.

    Everyone who wants to see linux on the desktop should support the people who develop applications for it, not the people who don't.

    But the people who want to see Linux on the desktop the most are the people who are already developing applications for it. Maybe more people will support them when the Linux community drops their elitist, intelligent-geeks-only attitude.

    Please buy yourself a clue stick. Adobe's main market is probably still publishing software (including photoshop). Most print houses and graphic designers are all macs. Adobe will still want a chunk of that. Do you have any evidence that they are looking to get out of the mac publishing market? Or are you just posting FUD?

    No. The millitary's job is not to kill people. It's to help defend people. People may get killed in the process of course.

    The fact is that, killing in the millitary shouldn't be seen as normal, like something they're supposed to do. It should be seen as a last resort. And when people make comments like that, it makes you wonder what they see themselves as.

    When I got my new digital camera. The guy told me the first thing I should do is stick the battery in and drain it flat, then recharge it full, and drain it flat again, then recharge full, and use as normal. And that I should get a good life out of it by doing this.

    I've also been told that every now-and-then (not sure if it was every 12 or 6 months) that it's good to drain Li-ions flat, and give them a good charge again (this is called deep-cycling).

    Most of the time though, Li-ions prefer to be topped up. I think that deep-cycling Li-ions all the time is bad for them. Unlike with say, NiCads, where it's the opposite.

    Wrong. People still make NiCads, and will continue to untill something else comes along with a lower internal-resistance (NiCads can be drained very quickly).
    The R/C model industry is pretty much all NiCad, with NiMH starting to become a bit more common.

    And yes, they are toxic, but they're also recyclable.

    Li-ion in custom R/C cars? If you want performace, NiCad is still king in this area because Li-ion doesn't really pack a punch compared to NiCad or NiMH. They can't handle being drained very fast. A good 6 cell battery of sub-C, 2000mAh, 1.2v (7.2v total) NiCads can be saftly drained dead flat in 4 mins with no damage.

    They still have a higher capacity though.

    And I also think they'd probably be more common in digital cameras etc that R/C models. I'm sure they sell Li-ion AAs. Could be wrong here.

    You'd think they'd have fix this by now. But no.
    Panther had better fix it, or my iBook will be swapped for some cheap wintel laptop :(

    Any yes, one would also have thought that they'd atleast have an option somewhere to stop crapping little files on non-mac systems by now.

    Too slow, and BT networks are NOT everywhere, unless you're sitting in your office.
