Or to put it another way, the eye is a higher bandwidth input port than the ear, but the eye is no use for output. We cannot effectively communicate our needs to a computer by drawing pictures.
You should really read the artical properly. The reason he said that talking to a computer might not be the way of the future, is because it takes up more memory than using hand and eye cordination.
It's not the eye that doing the output here, it's the hands. I know I can do alot more things with my keyboard and mouse that I ever could by talking to my computer. Talking is simply to slow and clumsy for me, no matter how advanced/intelligent the computer is.
It's also why purely visual interfaces are fundamentally less powerful than command line interfaces
Oh god....Not the whole CLI is better than GUI thing again. Listen up here. I do graphic design for a living. You are sadly mistakin if you thnk that CLI is better for everything. Even for the non-designer, look at a web-site. Which is faster? Click the link or type the URL? Which is easier and more relible? GUI. You can also right click the link to get instant options that would be faster than typing.
I know CLI has it uses, I've spent the last few months using MySQL, and the CLI has some advatages for that kinda stuff. But even then. It's much faster and easier to select text with a mouse. And selecting files can still be much faster, easier and more powerfull with a GUI than a CLI.
Anyway, when you use you CLI, you are using hand and eye coordination. You are looking at the screen while typing with your hands. Sure, you could also talk to a CLI. But for the very reason this artical was written, it would not be as effeicent because you waste memory when you speak out-loud as opposed to using hand and eye coordination. So the whole CLI vs. GUI thing is a redundant point anyway.
I forked out over $4000 (NZD) for an iBook, when I could have brought a PC laptop for $2500 that would have ran either Win2000 or WinXP like lightning.
Instead. I get a laptop that can't even scroll down a page without feeling sluggish....Something that computers for the last 4 years have been able to do.
I'm sick of this "you shouldn't have brought a low-end iBook then" BS.
Acctually. I think it's the other way around. I read somewhere he said something like the Newton not being a complete waste because they used the handwriting recognition engine from it.
Wonder if it will also support ICQ? After all, AOL does own ICQ aswell. That would be heaven sent for me, 'cause ICQ for the mac ain't pretty IMHO, it's not that pretty on the PC to begin with....I like floating users though.
As for browsers, AOL can have Netscape/Mozilla, and us mac users can have Navigator/Chimera/Mozilla (well, once it move out of beta). All hail the mightly Mozilla! I'm just waiting for the day when Mozilla rises from the ocean, walks to MS HQ, starts to smash down a few buildings, then eats bill gates.
...We just need to find a way of getting 100 tons of fish into Reamond.
If Apple never bother to properly support OS X for these computers. I will be demanding my money back. It's unacceptable that the top-of-the-range iBook that I bought only a few months ago can't even run it's OS properly.
As much as I like my iBook, it's useless to me if I know that it will always feel sluggish.
I know there will be someone who going to reply to this say "But the iBook is Apples bottom of the line laptop, it was never meant to be quick, it you need something with more power, you should have gotten a G4". That's BS, I never said I wanted to do 3D modeling or video editing (even though I can do this under OS 9 with good results), I just want to be able to scroll down a page, without having to f'n wait. That's all.

Well here in NZ, we have alot of speed cameras (and prolly some red light cameras up in Auckland) it you car get's snapped, you pay. If it was your firend driving, you take that up with them. It's your car, it's registered to you, you are responisble for it. The only exception of course, is if the car has been stolen etc.
The key here is addiction. Alot of people who I know that smoke, just started off having the occational one with friends, becuase they knew it was unhealthy and didn't want to do it all the time. Then once a week becomes twice and twice becomes...
You could argue that other things are addictive, like Coke. But they are open with the fact that they put caffeine in their drinks, and they have a reason to put it in their other than the fact that it's addictive.
The could make the main link Bold. And the other links normal. But since none of the editors have a single design bone in their body, we can give up all hope of that.
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't annoy me that/. does things like this. It's their site, I'm not a design nazi, and after all, it was created by a group of programmers. But I'm still supprised at the lack of professionalism here considering how long/. has been going, and how big it has gotten.
Hunt around for the 'hidden chapters' or whatever they're called, It's basicly an alternate ending, where they don't get killed. I have them in some Palm Doc format, they should be floating around the web somewhere.
My friend's opinion of what happend, was that Adams was just getting sick of them by the end. Hence the harsh ending. Then I guess he decided to do a better ending when he was in a better mode or felt he owed it to the fans or something.
I could be completely wrong here. But won't evolution stop if people just clone themselves?
I remember seeing a doco on TV about a species of lizard that are all females.
They give birth to clones, and do so at will, by themselves (I think they might still mate for ritual purposes or something). But they said that this made the lizards more vunrible, as they can't addapt to an cimate changes like other animals can.
Well, of course....Cartoons that are mean like futurama subconsiously affect the way our young kids think. It is unacceptable to have these kinda shows on TV for our young kids to watch, they're mean, violent, and show an show the horrible side of human life.
...They should be watching good, kind, families movies like Rambo, Rocky, Die Hard, Speed, The Terminator etc. And good, TV shows like NYPD Blue, ER, Sapranoes, real life TV shows, and talkshows like Jerry Springer.
I dissagree. I think they should stick with Apple Garamond (or whatever it's called). It's part of what make Apple unique/classy (old typeface on something as modern as a computer). Most other companies I know of have a modern typeface, it gets a bit boring.
Apple may have been using it since 1982. But the font is already outdated by about 100+ years anyway. If it was ever going to look dated, it would have in 1982.
I say keep it, IMHO. Although, I can see why they used something different for the eMac.
Because maybe I do other things with my laptop (web-design, web-programming). And because I find it hard to carry my PC--with 2 monitors, and a big power supply--around with me. But if you willing to shout me a 21" monitor and a G4 tower, I will be more than happy to accept.
Different strokes for different folks.
I got an iBook because I didn't like the TiBook screen (well, and for cost factors;) )...Far to pixely looking IHMO. The iBooks screen looks razor sharp by comparison. In fact the resolution is the main thing that has put me off both the TiBook and iMac. I just don't like the pixelated look. Maybe I'm just a minority being a graphic designer.

Horray!....What about pop-up folders?
Modded off-topic? Then why not mod down my other post and the replys to it aswell since they are also off-topic.
Of course, it would be great if you and other submitters did it. Then maybe Taco and the likes will catch on :).

OK. Seal up your room, fill it up with 100% nitrogen, and let me know how you get on after a few hours...
*sigh* Next thing you know, people will be telling me we can breath water because it contains oxygen.

But that would all be OK if you didn't put addictive chemicals in it for the sole purpose of making you product addictive.

Probably right there....Another dumb question: Don't plants need pollination from another plant to produce seeds/reproduce?
I belive so. I only had a quick scim-read over it. But I'm pretty sure it's the same one I read.

it could also be agrued that both Quark and Corel already had these features before adobe did, from what I've heard.
Just out of interest. What kind of music do you listen to?
I don't usaly make comments on sigs. But that one's a classic.
