Anyways, my first thought was that it was cool that they tried to do it just because. It would also be a nice test on how complete cygwin is, right? I mean, if you can run the OS it is supposed to emulate on it, it should be pretty well done.:)
Remember though, that most people that would be afraid of Linux stuff won't have Cygwin either, in most cases. If they are already using Cygwin, they should have little problem with the basics of Linux, and I think they know this. Cygwin is actually harder to get used to, and I tried Cygwin first, not the other way around...
To really break in the new-but-curious, you would almost need a complete installer, with cygwin and debian. Hopefully explaining a lot of the steps on the way, so the curious understands what this is about.:)
Well I think it is cool.
I hope it will bring good too.
"I have a better idea. How about I keep downloading for free, and you start charging reasonable sums for ordinary CDs?"
After that, we can reason about charging any money for music on the net. As it is now, the outrageous CD prices probably are somewhat outweighed by piracy.
Someone needs to take the first step to diminish both, and knowing the computer community, they won't. Maybe they shouldn't either.:)
One step the computer community *could* take first is stop clogging the bandwidth downloading *everything*. Guess what you are winning? Pay-for-bandwidth providers. DL what you need/want instead. That would probably be enough to calm the companies too, it would probably lower the MP3 downloads to 5% of what it is now.
Who is impressed by 80GB (mostly sucky) MP3s anyways...
Apple won this bid fair and square based on the merits of their bid (the software, the training, and the hardware).
Don't forget the *heavy* drop in price. They sold this one at a loss price, not a stupid thing in many cases though. But look at that fact too.
Personally, I think apple is a poor choice, not because it suck (as an OS) or because it is a niche OS.
I think it sucks because Apple don't give a crap about developers, bringing the market less programs, and because it is "the same bang (at best) for double the price". Who wants that?
It was different before, when apple was seriously innovative instead of just going "cool multimedia", and promoted people that did cool stuff with their computers.
Now all they do is draw pretty pictures and stylish cases. *Shrugs*
And to you that asks "You want MS instead?" I ask back "What is the difference anymore?".

It almost perfectly imitates the way that supposedly "french" people talk in English-speaking movies and series such as Cafe Rene.
Not necessarliy a good thing though. I've seen that series.
One thing I've found, is that even if I don't stick with a language I try, I program the others slightly different, and hopefully better after tried it and gotten my thinking shaken around a little...:)
... I had mod points.:) Because I'd mod this one Waaaay up.
Those advice from Stroustrup are worth gold. And as if a coincidence, those very advices echo through that very book you are mentioning. I read it. It is very good.
Actually, those, and similar advices are the ones I try to live by too... my greatest problem right now, however is that it is too much to choose from. After reading this, and revisiting Hunt and Thomassite I think I'll have a go with Ruby, finally.
Thanks!
For some, it is too late...

In Sweden, some ATMs are already running NT.
And yes, they did *actually* get those "Low on Virtual Memory" errors (try to hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE to reboot on an ATM) and even a few bluescreens back then. I kid you not.
On the other hand after those child diseases, they are actully seeming to behave, and I know of noone that has actually lost (or gotten) money due to this.
The banks just needed two service packs, is my guess.:)
Well, so this product, after troubles unheard of in other systems, finally made it "stable" and "reliable".
I would not like to bet my money once again, just because I got the winning ticket once. Would you?
... that it is so easy to be judged and then placed in the central square for the ritual tomato throwing.
I mean, come on.... if it is true, then by all means, string them up by their balls. But where is the proof?
What if I put up a page where I said that Slashdot hired me, and then refused to pay me - would you run that story? If I said it was Microsoft then? I thought so.
Maybe you know a lot about this guy, things that are not mentioned around here, but so far, all I see is this guy ranting about he didn't get any money from this company. Which may, or may not be true.
Of course, we want it to be true, so we can point our finger at, and hopefully ruin this bad, bad company. What if this guy is lying then? Slashdot is in no way almighty, but it does have some impact on the linux world, or at least we would like to think so. It is not nice to write such about a company that may be struggling without any proof.
If the developers are the mindless ASP or VB trolls, or something similar, I am sure they can do just fine with the Office Package and Visual Studio and not needing to configure a thing.
However, if those are your developers, you may have other problems....
All that aside, in my work place that would be totally impossible - almost as impossible as it is explaining this to a suit. Heh. We are expected to run the whole show, fix any problems that arise and come up with new and better solutions, fast fixes and generally run the show. This includes, for the first thing, a lot of downloading and evaluating new software, be it IDEs, databases, browsers, languages, whatever to get the job done.
If we needed to wait for permission or some IT administration dude (that knows about 2% of what we do about the machines anyways) we'd simply never produce a thing. Ever.
Also, add in that developers are often hackers, and as such, playful, imaginative, curios and creative - actually, that is why you should pay them at all, because of those qualities. To me, it seems you are trying to kill that very thing that makes them tick. Bad move.
... to run on linux, as long as they're not made anyways. Which they aren't.
Keeping linux absolutely windows-free, or closed-source-free, will apparently not produce the things people wants, right?
So a healthy mix, if possible, is fine with me.
Anything to get Linux usable for Joe Sixpack, and common on the desktop. Then, and only then, there is a market for specific programs and games for that platform.
I'm so addicted to the Opera ones that I'm doing gestures in all my other programs.... lol. I hope they are compatible with each other, and that all other programs follows...:)
Sure keyboard shortcuts are good too, but I've noticed thath mouse gestures are even more effective. And Opera has all the keyboard fancy too, of course... together it is awesome!
If I pay you to write some software, and then I give that software away to anyone that wants it, would that possibly be a scenario that is both reasonable and fits the above sentence?
I mean, apart from me paying you money, or me wanting you to write my software, or any of the other obvious flaws in the scenario, of course.:)
...normal banners, that would be the best choice. Doesn't really bother anyone, and if it is interesting... I click.
If you are gonna quote, do it correctly, please.
Of course by accepting and clicking on popup ads you are encouraging their further use, which will cause even more people to investigate ad blockers.
See above. I don't click on popups. It is my firm beleif that banner ads would have been sufficient for the internet if people hadn't been so obstinate about trying to get rid of them. Guess what, you got popups instead then.
it is my right to view all or part of it in any way I choose.
Your right, given by whom? I'd say it is the content providers right to not have his page altered by anyone who views it. Which means that you should view it in the way the provider intended it. Much like the debate about the MS smart tags. One of the biggest things people were against was that they changed a content providers pages without their constent. That was evil with smart tags, but not with banner filters? I know it wasn't the only smart tag issue, but it was one major.
Is it also stealing if I load the banner but simply ignore it?
I'd say you've fulfilled your end of the agreement in this case. Noone can force you to buy anything just because you walk by a store on the street either. What the advertiser wants, is the chance to show you his/her product or similar. If you give them that chance, you have payed for the page you are viewing. How hard was that?
Did that make things (or my view of them) any clearer?
So you don't use the fast-forward button on your VCR to skip ads?
Is that the same thing? I thought I paid for my movie ( rental or buy ) in the store, and then they toss in some trailers to try and get me to see more movies by the same company. Some actually even see this as a service - the same people that dl trailers for new movies from the internet.
In any case, I don't think those are ads. They are in no way included in the deal, in other words, it is not a price you are meant to pay to see the movie. That one you pay with cash instead.
Unless you mean some other kind of movie that we don't have where I live (yet)?
You gotta wonder what kind of critisism, opinions or similar they are afraid students will voice on the internet. Apparently the school is harboring secrets deep and dark enough to actually pay money from their budget, and use their employees time chasing this issue. Scary.
I'd have to admit though, that there Is a point to stopping anyone from using a domain that could be masked as the official page.
... by for instancem, viewing ads? It isn't exactly free to host sites, especially good ones.
Sadly, I can't stand the popups either, so I am very depressed by the fact that the advertisers didn't stick to normal banners, that would be the best choice. Doesn't really bother anyone, and if it is interesting... I click. Otherwise, I don't.
I'm equally depressed by the sorry mofos that use filters. That is kinda like stealing. Well, I guess you think you are Robin Hood liberating the internet. No, you are lowering the quality of the internet, by driving providers out of business. By taking their stuff for free. Do you do the same in stores?
I love free internet, and ad-free internet - but I don't demand that everyone can afford to bring you the latest news, articles or whatever it may be for free. Can you do that?
"Habitat for Humanity is considering the free Linux operating system. But because Microsoft is so dominant, it will be difficult for firms to switch. Windows runs 92% of PCs. Its Office software has better than a 90% market share, Gartner says."
