Nothing sleeper about it - this game has been hyped for years, with trailers pouring out of people's ears by now. If it isn't a hit, PC game industry will possibly collapse once and for all.
I read at +3, so pardon me if you already stated it somewhere, but I don't understand how people can presume that it's an april fools joke and don't see how insanely profitable this will be.
Among all the cries of "you'll NEVER, EVER have to erase any of your mail", the only thing missing is the "or we'll kill you" suffix. Combine this with the "search-based, no browsing, all indexed, all the time" approach and there you have it - a huge, ever growing base of keywords for customized ads delivery per user.
It's evil and I would never use it. Call it what you want, I'm just not sold to that particular feeling one gets when after a ten-mail long-distance breakup with one's fiancee one starts getting ads for "Russian brides" services. I'm funny like that.
It boggles the mind how easily people can substitute their love for a pulp SF space-opera for a film based on literary fantasy classic. Is it because they are both trilogies?
You know what, Lucas? I'm sick of you and am instead pledging my eternal allegiance to "Trois Couleurs: Rouge, Blanc et Bleu". Hopefully, there'll be quite some DVD editions in the near future, so I can bitch about how Kieslowski is milking me.
A publicity stunt and a cheap one, at that. Someone is beginning to realize that the really important channels of information on the Internet are controlled by nerds and so washed-out artists are starting to jump on the fad train.
This "DVD", it is obvious, is a cheap and quick way to get his name in the papers, if not to make a few bucks. The symbols that are described (such as Dolly the sheep enclosed on a PowerPoint page in quotation marks) sound... well, again, cheap.
- for the average suave Windows user - said the company who gives said users MS Paint for bitmap creation and Notepad as the default text editor. Both unlimited.
Also, bands most of which would sell to the industry in a heartbeat, given half the chance. That is not the solution to the problem.
And there is a problem.
Recording industry is basically government sanctioned organized crime - crime against both music and consumers. They overcharge their role as the middleman dramatically and choke creativity by force-feeding the public with sterile, expresionless pop junk in order to maximise their profits. It was made possible because people not only love, but need music - and in the recent music was more expensive to make and distribute. However, that is not the case anymore. They are not really all that needed anymore. RIAA is an industry which will have to be cut down to a fraction of its current size and that is the bottom line.
...was written by himself, in his "opinions" column titled: "Opinion: Reasons To Shun Open Source-ry"
The very first two sentences are so mind-boggingly imbecilic, not to mention a self-contained circus act of jumping into one's own mouth, that one needs not read further:
"Linux is not ready for the enterprise.
When I argued that point a month ago, I didn't really believe it."
I believe that the answer to the question WHY he argued that question if he didn't believe it himself, is a kind of Zen puzzle, with MS money acting the part of the sound in the felled forest of Forrester research's successes.
It was proposed, but the Macs make the astronauts all fruity -- in a test they started complaining about the shuttle wallpapers, using words like "flamboyant" over the voice comm and pinching each others' behinds.
Console titles' sales have always been way ahead of PC titles. It often happens that a console title which got horrible reviews sells more than a PC title which has won the Interactive Academy award.
The interesting info in the article is about the decline in sales of PC titles through the 10 months of this year, as in that period many potential hits were released. If Warcraft 3, UT 2003 and countless Sims expansions didn't break the last year's sales, then maybe the industry IS in crisis.
It seems like a really bad move from a marketing strategy viewpoint. I am just not able to see how people who buy portable hardware for playing digital music (even the user-friendly Mac flavor) are the same people who would enjoy having something signed by a pop-star. But let us say that they are - I still don't see why you need to advertise a solid hi-tech product with a cheap gimmick. It is not just simple endorsement.
Each simulation used more than 6.6 million CPU hours, which would take home machines 1000 years to complete.
Even with the "non-snail-RISC" processors and Cinematastic LCD mother-of-pearl screens? My sceptic yet stylish mind will just have to wait for the next Macworld to find out about that.
It will never work.
Napster is a dead cow, the brand name in this case is tied with keywords like "controversy" and "piracy" in the mind of the average consumer -- and "server down"/"lame" in the mind of the l33t. So buying it for its brand name is not too smart. And the code was not much to begin with. Why bother?
How could ign (to name an example) possibly put any more irritating shit on my screen without buying me a twinview(tm) graphics adapter and another monitor?
Or does it mean that more friendly banner-ad faces will start talking?
Comparisons with png/gif history are NOT valid here, although such ARE usually a foolproof tao of the karma-gatherer;). Those who make them are probably not aware of the difference in quality/size ratio between wavelet compression and the current (pathetic) jpeg. It is not only "beefed up" jpeg, people. It is qualitatively different, using completely different philosophy and algorithms so smart that the FBI people probably got them from aliens in exchange for not drilling their testicles. They lied, of course - but the aliens delivered.
What thrills me even more is the possible application of wavelet compression algorithms in 3D.
See this for a dramatic flash-based demonstration of advantages - notice that it says 4kb!: http://www.luratech.com/index_e.html
Now they can start pumping doctored photorealistic "screenshots", drop the PS2 price and eat the rest of the market cake.
It isn't even about the games anymore... Everyone loses money on the consoles and yet still try to peddle as many as they can -- I will postulate that the game has become about establishing control through presence.
Japan's reaction to X-Box was VERY weird. I mean, those people buy A LOT of junk. They live through the junk. They date and fish and hallucinate through the consoles. Japan is the pinnacle of consumption-based philosophy. Why didn't they go for the X-Box? National pride? It was as if old Yancy told everyone that they should ignore the american toy.
Anyway, a question. Can we assess the "long run" outcome at this point? Has X-Box lost the war?
But I think OE 6 is very usable. I would, however, like to see it offer:
1. a more flexbile, script-based mail filtering system 2. better integration with GnuPG (although Timo Schultz' hack GPGOE works fine) 3. more options in communicating with the server 4. color coding, PINE style - someone mentioned that further up
As a newsreader, however, OE it is severely FUBAR. Immensely stupid in handling posts.
Could very well turn out to be a sleeper hit.

...is that they attained 180 gigaflops, failing short of the goal.
Also, for the miraculous gift of the break tag, which your servant is not worthy enough to use.
Lots of QuickTime movies of the bot in action. Thank you sweet lord for the miraculous gift of context!
Spam & Bologna? All the news/releases on the ends of all the provided links are dated April 1st? So, how can we trust it?

Could you, please, measure it and post the measures here? Thanks.

"Ach, Himmel! Raccoons!"
And this guy here just might be the new Ron Jeremy.
1. imagine how many people you could find with a Beowulf cluster of these
2. powered by Google - cached versions of your snow-covered friends also available. Search for your friends by keywords.
