It's funny to see Microsoft use these same tactics over and over again. No matter who the competitor, they leverage their control of the OS to attack their competition.

Does anyone disagree that this patent is an expression of Microsoft applying this formula to supplant Google's dominance in advertising? I'm a little dubious as to its potential threat to Google, but time will tell.

This stinks like the preparations for advertising-supported Microsoft products.

Are there any players that will let you sync the audio to the video and let it work for fastfoward and pausing? That's the only problem I can see with it, be a real pain in the ass if you had to just let the damn thing run, no pausing. If I'm in an audience of a size greater than one, there will be pauses, rewinds, etc. The do try and make it easier to sync mid-movie by occasionally having a robot-voiced character read a line that should be synchronized with a line in the movie. This way, you *can* still start in the middle of a movie, but it is a PITA.

The standard tuner box they provide is passable, if a little slow/unresponse (hey, it runs winCE, what do you expect ;).

Compression artifacts in HD are very evident. As you mentioned, I would also not recommend this service for someone wanting very high quality HD. It still looks better than a standard definition broadcast, but the artifacts really bug me.

The on demand service is rather sparse, hopefully their catalog of available material will improve.]

All in all, I'd get it if they offered it where I live, if for the internet connection alone.

I'll be curious to see; what book? Littering? What criminal offenses did the Cartoon Network actually commit? All the authorities are talking big but I suspect the reason we haven't heard any charges are because they are scratching their head trying to figure out how to get Cartoon Network to foot the bill.

It sounds to me like Cartoon Network's marketing idea wasn't so bad, but their placement of the devices was insanely bad. Bundles of unexplainable electronics on bridges, subway stations.. they might as well have left them on an airport concourse or the white house lawn.

When I was in Atlanta in November, somewhere vaguely near the Turner building on I85 was a giant billboard of an illuminated mooninite outline just like on these devices. Spiffy.

In fact, the Korean Government will demand MS "fix" "their" problem, as obviously it is MS's fault for breaking "the Internet". This is a small point compared to the real point you were making, but couldn't someone claim that they have every right to pressure MS to fix ActiveX in this case? All they did was adopt a technology that MS pushed on everyone. Granted, it didn't take hold very well for most of MS's market, but you can't blame them for being a bit angry at being left out in the cold.

The main thing that sets the flash player apart from those other audio-producing applications you listed is that the flash player uses OSS. I'd assume you have software audio mixing, and my guess is that flash player doesn't know how to "play nice" with the software mixing solution you use, be it arts, alsa's dmix plugin (which new version of alsa enable by default for some cards), or esd.

Not that I'm a fan of Adobe's flash player. I still open a 32 bit browser whenever I absolutely need flash, and use a 64 bit browser the rest of the time. One of the main reasons I'm still using my old SoundBlaster Live! is because it has hardware mixing, and gets around problems like what it sounds you are experiencing.

Personally, I find that one thing that makes Microsoft look bad is the fact that the sorts of questions *can only* be answered by the legal department. Why shouldn't marketing be able to answer some basic questions about licensing and IP issues?

If every aspect of Microsoft's stance on IP issues can only be learned by a team of lawyers, then they can hardly be said to be "open" in their policies.

Obviously I am not saying that the marketing guy is responsible for answering every possible question that was thrown at him, but I do think that the sheer number and nature of the questions he could not answer paints a picture of a company who continues to be evasive and devious with its IP strategy.
