Woz is by far one of the best speakers I have ever heard. I saw him at MacHack a few years ago and the audience couldn't get enough of him. His stories and memories are some of the most colorful and interesting stories, and he has great speaking skills to back them up. I'm considering going to HOPE, and if I could go, I wouldn't miss the chance to be in the front row again.

That out of the way, the robot's conducting, if you watch the video, isn't really all that good. Not to mention, the robot's conducting was about as emotionless as it gets. Conducting is not just about waving a stick around to the tempo, it's about listening to the band and responding dynamically. You have to convey the emotions you want to be heard by the audience in the stick. Facial expressions and body language contribute to that.

And what about conducting non-professional groups? It needs to be able to respond dynamically to the tempo itself if the group start's to drag. It'll have to be able to show the pissed off look to when I miss a note too...

What a lame piece of crap! Anyone at least marginally knowledgeable about computers and cryptology and security will want to slap Dan for the inconsistencies and falsities littered throughout the book.

The $500 scholarships are worthless, do not bother.

Woah woah woah! I have to disagree with you there. If you go for reputable scholarships in small amounts, they really add up. A bulk of the $5,000 I earned in scholarships was from these small ones. I have to admit though, one I applied for, which wanted a "$5 application" fee and seemed reputable and solid never ever wrote back to me to say if I had won the scholarship or not.

So it's up to the individual to decide how he wants to spend his time. I spent more time on the larger scholarships and the ones I was more sure of possibly winning and I made off pretty well.

    YMMV, as always.

There is no easy money, especially in your situation. I'm currently a freshman at CalPoly - San Luis Obispo which is a rather technically inclined college and I'm a computer science major.

How did I get my $5,000 in scholarships?

Answer: A lot of frigging work and little by little. You've got to use every single resource at your fingertips to find every scholarship at your disposal. FastWeb was an invaluable resource in finding scholarships, though like many search engines, it gave me lot's of false positives and left out a good few. Don't waste your time on the major scholarships like the Discover or Target ones that look for one amazing community service-person or something like that that you are not absolutely sure that you stand out in. I did my share of community service in high school, but I was surely no where near one of the top kids.

Make lists of ones you're elligible for and write them all down with due dates and things you need for each (letters of reccomendation and all). Prioritize them and all. On your essays, edit edit edit! Show your english teachers, your history teachers, EVERYONE! Remember, they went to college too, so every little bit of help you can get from them will help you.

Your high school should have a resource center or something that will help you find local scholarships. Do as many of those as possible. Because they are local, you'll be up against a lot fewer people. Talk to your resource person too, they have that job for a reason.

My biggest scholarship ($1,000) was from Sertoma Intnl. for my hearing impairment. That was a big one for me, so I worked especially hard on that one. Make your essay's relevant and interesting. The essay readers have to read hundreds of essay's, so the more interesting your essay is and the more it stands out and makes you unique, helps.

Other than that, you're on your own. Follow the instructions, dot your I's and perfect those applications to the T. They like clean scholarships. There's no way out of this but to work hard on them.

Speaking of such, scholarship season is coming up for me. Anyone wanna throw money at a Dean's List freshman? Pwetty pwease????

Well, my intention was to save the computer from the pressure of several textbooks and binders against it and the pounding from my back. I often ride my bike to class, so my back is angled, meaning that the books would sit right on top of my precious. :-) In either case, my binders and books are nice and flat/hard anyways, so I have the flat thing going on as well as protecting my computer.

However, I do notice that the bottom/front part of the backpack hits the ground first, so I always set my bag down carefully. Then again, shouldn't you if your computer's in it?

Again, this is just my solution to this many-headed Hydra. When I (someday, I hope) get a fancy ol' 15" Aluminum PowerBook, I'll probably plunk down the cash to get a real decent sleeve for it and a better designed bag. Until then, my iBook seems to truck along just fine!

  12. From my experience... on Recommendations For A Good Laptop Bag? · · Score: 3, Insightful
Speaking from my years and years of experience with *several* bags, the best way to go it to get a sleeve thing for your computer (any sort of neoprene is good, as are reinforced sides) then buy a luggage bag. I don't mean those pseudo-laptop bags, I mean those heavy-duty bags meant for luggage etc. If you're really paranoid like me, you can roll up a towel and put it in the bottom.

Otherwise, it depends on the laptop you have. My iBook is sturdier than hell (800MHz white etc) and it goes with me to all my classes (being a comp. sci. major and all). From what I've seen, the cheaper laptops such as low-end Dells are as fragile as Middle-East peace.

So, what bag do I use if I have so much experience? Well, I bought a $10 neoprene sleeve made by Sony for their Vaio laptops and I throw it in my backpack (which is made to carry 40-50 punds of stuff). That bag will never freaking break. The other nice thing about school bags is that they never seem to fail all at once, they tend to rip and give a little, givinng you plenty of warning to replace it. Just make sure not to put your laptop right in the back near your back and below all your books or whatnot.

I've jogged to many a class and that set-up refuses to show any signs of giving up.
