It sounds suspisciously like you don't want a consumer machine... If you wanted all this, would you buy a low level $600 Dell machine *then* upgrade everything? If you want pro-level equipment, you probably want to *buy* pro-level equipment.

It's not that Apple computers don't have all the spiffy ports, it's that they can't be upgraded later on when the definition of "spiffy port" changes.

Very true. However, that hasn't ever presented a problem to me. By the time the "spiffy port" has changed, I'm buying a new computer anyways. But as always, YMMV.

People usually argue that enthusiasts like myself should be buying PowerMacs, but the whole point is that a $500 PC is just as capable of doing these things as a $2000 PowerMac. PowerMacs have many benefits, but you pay for a lot of benefits that you don't need to buy the one benefit that you do.

I can see your point, but realize, your strategy is not Apple's strategy. Because people who want fancy things buy the fancy computers, Apple is able to make a profit. Imagine if their $499 Mac was as expandable as their PowerMac- it would cannabalize their PowerMac sales. Apple's formula seems to work for them. I'm too lazy to see if it's cheaper to buy a bare-bones computer and upgrade it to the equivalent high-end specs of some other machine.

In the end, if you don't like it- you don't have to buy it. What works best for you, be it a Mac or PC or NeXT Cube or whatever, is what you should use.

  10. Re:Mac-games on Classic Mac FPS Marathon Turns 10 · · Score: 3, Insightful

No they weren't. You need a Bungie history lesson.

Turn off the flame-thrower, it's just a company, let's not get emotional about it.

Bungie's first PC game was Marathon 2. It mostly fell flat on the PC side, but that was their first foray into the Windows world.

You're correct on the first count, but completely wrong on the second. Here's what Bungie has to say about the "flop" of the PC version of Marathon 2:

Marathon 2, released in November 1995, was also the first Bungie game to be ported to PC (Windows 95, in September 1996), marking Bungie's transition from Mac specialist to multiplatform publisher. It coincided with tremendous growth - the company's revenues shot up an astonishing 500%. This was now a company with a marketing staff, programmers, artists, desks, Post-It notes - the whole deal!

Next up was Myth, which was a simultaneous Mac/PC release. Myth 2 followed the same tradition. Oni was simultaneous or nearly so for the Mac and PC, and also came out for the PS2. All of this was before the Microsoft Unpleasantness.

But Oni was intended to be a Mac-only game. It wasn't until 1999 (Oni dates back to the creation of the west-coast office in 1997), that it was announced to be a Mac/PC/PS2 title. It was also to be Bungie's first real console game (Marathon was ported to Pippin, but we all know what happend to that, uhh, wildly succesful platform...)

Halo was originally developed on Macs and intended for the same simultaneous Mac/PC release as all of their other stuff until Microsoft bought them out. Bungie hadn't been Mac-only for a long time at that point, and Microsoft's big change was making it an Xbox exclusive, and then finally allowing crappy ports to the PC and Mac worlds.

True. Even worse, it took forever for the crappy ports to come out. Bite me, Microsoft!

Just buy an used computer. With used PCs being so freaking cheap, it's almost a no-brainer to snap one up if you're looking for an cheap machine.

I was looking for a cheap box to use as my web server etc. So, I bought a simple HP box that had a 550MHz Celeron, A CD-ROM drive, a 5GB HD (I later upgraded to 80GB), and 192MB RAM. I threw Debain on there and it's a flawless server, and it hasn't gone down once. The only time it's been off has been when I was moving it. It hosts 3 sites consisting of 3 WordPress installations, 1 phpBB installation, 1 Textpress installation, 2 Gallery installations, and 1 calendar thingy mo-bob.

So don't waste your time trying to put together a $100 machine from new parts. It was a fun story in The First $20 Million Is Always The Hardest, in reality, it's sort of a joke. I'm not saying that it's totally stupid, I just think it's a waste of time and effort.

What business is it of yours to shove your persistent commercials into eyes and minds that don't belong to you? Other people might want to breathe and think freely, and it sounds like the poster has a problem with figuring out that our urban spaces have become polluted with non-stop consumer messages that indiscriminately pelt young and old, male and female, black and white, with constant forced messages on how they're supposed to live (by buying our shit, of course!). Television was merely a conduit of information; now it has become an annoying and frustratingly intrusive bringer of conformity.

And it's the height of arrogance and bourgeoise elitism to think that people who are concerned about visual and audio pollution in their daily lives and think that they actually have a RIGHT to clarity of life are "elitists".

The parent post talks about "intellectual elitism". For fuck's sake, people...

Blatant parody aside, what does it take? What's too intrusive? I'm assuming the parent post author would have no problem sitting at his table in a resturant screaming "BUY BUY BUY!
