However, there's a little bit of wierdness from the NetSol side: I xferred the domain a week ago, and as far as Gandi is concerned, the deal is done. Running $whois omar.org returns a referral to Gandi. Yet NetSol sent me an email today saying the domain could not be transferred because one of the contacts did not respond. WTF? I responded to NetSol's email, but NetSol does not answer email anymore. I declined to use their Web form, choosing instead to assume everything's alright. Anyone else have any experiences like this? I'm trying to decide if I should worry or not!

Turns out they'd already removed my salary from the current FY's books (it's all about the numbers, baby) and needed me to stop drawing it asap. Moral: Keep your fsking mouth shut, no matter how honest you happen to be.

To their credit, they did grant me a reasonable declining retainer, but I don't give them that much credit since lots of the critical knowledge in my head hadn't made it into anyone else's yet. :)

I live in Norfolk, VA and it looks like Isabel is going to hit us dead on. The present NOAA trajectory guesses have the eye passing more or less right over my house, a few clicks west of downtown Norfolk.

Checking on Weather.com today I was struck by some ironic use of advertising (note pink arrow).

I've got plywood cut to board the windows unless we get some good news in the next couple of days. My main concern is evacuation... i.e., I don't wanna, but it's probably not in my best interest to refuse in the event of a mandatory evacuation like the one ordered today at Ocracoke Island, NC (there is concern there of the only road to the mainland washing out).

The Great Storm of 1933 tracked very close to Isabel's path, and was a smaller storm. The '33 storm flooded downtown Norfolk quite badly, destroyed lots of buildings and piers on the coast, and destroyed many boats and ships. In my native Mathews, that storm deposited fishing boats in the woods and was responsible for separating New Point Comfort Lighthouse from the mainland (I also believe that it separated the Hole in the Wall Beach from the mainland as well).

Wish us luck, and ask your diety or animistic spirit of choice to spare us from excess wrath.

Why yes, I have travelled, but it was mainly to another rich, Western country, so it probably doesn't count. And BTW, I'm American.

It really, really sucks that sex causes AIDS. That's why it's such a successful disease. But if someone told me, "Having sex, especially outside of a truly monogamous relationship, might kill you," I would at least think seriously about commiting to one person, or to my right hand.

I am aware that breaking this patent is saving -- well, really prolonging -- lives. But you could say the same for so many other things! I could steal all the food out of grocery stores and feed the hungry! I could steal all the drugs out of the drugstore and heal the sick! I could kill drug dealers to keep kids off of drugs, and steal money from my neighbor to fix my pickup truck and pay for school, etc. etc.

I am not being selfish; I have nothing to lose here. Nobody is taking anything from me, so perhaps I should mind my own business. But I am not being selfish by insisting that people (and governments) should not steal things!

I am NOT saying that the Swiss drug companies are not perhaps immoral for demanding a high price from a poor country. But likewise, if I want to buy something or rent something and think the price is unreasonable, that does NOT give me the right to take it -- or you, or your government.
