    The Congress and the Senate may not be perfect, but I think calling them dictatorships is a bit much.

    Nobody said that it had to be easy, only that it had to be verifiable and repeatable.

    If elections were supposed to be easy, why would you only hold them once every four years?

    That would require that every entrance be staffed by security people who know the ins and outs of every notebook computer ever manufactured along with every operating system ever installed. There would have to be enough of them to handle all of that laptop surgery without holding up the lines, and they would have to be surrounded by an army of lawyers to prevent the convention organizers from being sued over the damage that they are going to cause.

    What I'm imagining instead is a conversation that goes something like this:

    "Excuse me, sir. You will have to turn on your laptop."

    "Huh?"

    "I have to see that it's a real computer."

    "Um, okay." *click*

    *wait wait wait* "Beep!"

    "Does this computer have any kind of whiffy network?"

    "What's that?"

    "Whiffy. It's, um... some kind of network thingy. And I guess it's bad. It could, you know, interfere with people's pacemakers or the microwave oven or something."

    "I don't know. It's a company computer. The IT guys deal with that."

    "Oh, fine. Whatever. Just go on in."

    It's for the same reason that you can't just have all celular phone users turn off their ringers during a movie -- There are always too many people who either don't know how to, don't understand why they should to or just don't care either way.

    During a speach in a crowded room filled with screaming supporters, Dean had to raise his voice to be heard over the noise. The networks got a hold of the feed from his hand-held microphone which had filtered out the background noise and isolated him screaming, then played it every five minutes in an attempt to convince their viewers that Dean was some kind of deranged, screaming lunatic.

    Many of the networks have since apologized for it, as there were many other films and audio feeds from that night which showed the real story. Had anybody bothered to look for it the truth was right there, but they were all having too much fun playing the "I have a scream" speach to death.

    By the same logic, why is it that you can be arrested for firing a shotgun at someone who, at the time you were arrested, is already dead?

    Is calling that "first degree murder" just a technicality, since you can't murder someone who is no longer alive?

    I though that you needed a license from the FCC to broadcast at a given frequency.

    Perhaps this might be a good time to read the article. Particularly the bit about how low power transmissions aren't regulated by the FCC.

    If I didn't know any better I would say that somebody is trying to hype the next version of Internet Explorer.
    "It's better than ever! You need the new Internet Explorer now!"

    "But I already have it. It works just fine for me. I haven't had any problems yet."

    "That's not true! You have problems you don't even know about it! It's awful, it's crap, it has to go away right now! Don't you see how serious we are about this? I'm going to spread coffee grounds all over Internet Explorer and then grind them in, just to show you how bad it is!"

    As long a the plaintif coughs up the dough for additional routers to handle this idiocy, that's fine.

    The sad thing is that they already _had_ their own IP space assigned to them, but (according to NAC, at least) were too lazy to migrate to it.

    Why bother doing all that hard technical work when you can call your lawyers and force someone else to do it for you? All the cool kids are doing it.
