"Does this mean that Disney licensed the MST3K parody commentary bit for their DVD's commentary track on Muppets From Space?"
Doubtful. They're not calling it Miss Terry Sign Ass The Ater.
I don't even need to perform a study on this

Color Me Productive
·
· Score: 4, Insightful
The color that boosts productivity is green. Green, as in money. Throw money at me, watch how much more I work. No, putting candy that I have to pay for in the kitchen won't boost my productivity. No, bringing a motivational speaker won't boost my productivity. No, telling me we all have to work 18 hours a day to stay with the competition and that I should be excited about the challenge won't boost my productivity. M$O$N$E$Y. MONEY. Gimme money and I'll work harder.
(Sorry, that little rant's been building up in my system for years.)
"The worst part about this, is what it does to open-source codecs..."
What, you mean forcing them to innovate? I know this won't be a popular opinion around here, but if the OSS Community really wants to win things like this, they're going to have to treat their projects like they're products, and compete with the alternatives out there. That means coming up with new stuff that hasn't been done before. That means making interfaces and documentation that dumb-asses such as my self can figure out without having to run to Google. That means making the presence of these things known.
Microsoft may be a nuisance, but the OSS Community isn't doing near enough to deal with them. The expectation that all the businesses out there who thrive on making money should just stand aside and let the righteous OSS movement stroll right in is self-destructive.
For the record, nothing about this post is intended to defend MS in any sort of way.
" I tend to think that the "only about games" attitude is merely Gamecube centric. "
No, it's hardware centric. This is not at all incongruous with Nintendo's views on making 'simply a gaming machine'. The hardware is all about gaming. The wireless connection is for gaming. THe stylus screen is for gaming. ETc. All it takes to make it do something like VOIP is software. If somebody wants to make a 'phone' cartridge for the DS, then by all means! You'll notice, though, that this unit has no MP3 or movie capabilities. (Yet there is an MP3 player for GBA that somebody else made...)
I ran across a video at the beginning of August (I tried to find it, but no luck) that demo'd a bunch of Nintendo DS software. It was a pretty cool vid, some of the stuff on there was amazing. One of the things they showed was a stylus based IM chat of some sort. One screen had incoming messages, teh stylus screen was for outgoing. The video was kind of neat: "Draw Mario!", and whoever was piloting the thing was drawing Mario for their guest.
Okay, not the most mind blowing thing in the world, but I can see why some would theorize about the DS's capabilities down the road including VOIP. All it takes is for one to make a cartridge for it.
"I'm sorry - but is it just me that thinks the sight of someone talking to their Gameboy would look ridiculous? People using hands free kits already look like dopes IMO. "
You've never seen somebody play their Gameboy lookin like they're talkin to Al?
"1) Why do they feel the need to complicate the iPod? People love the fact that it does one primary thing, and does it brilliantly. The iPod is expensive enough without any more frills."
a.) Complication? Eventually the market will be saturated. There is competition out there. They need to distinguish themselves to keep getting new sales. Besides, how much more complicated would it really be? It's all passive entertainment.
b.) The iPod's not being sold at cost. They have some wiggle room on the price. Chances are, they'd provide an iTunes like service for video. In that event, they could sell the hardware at a loss.
"2) If they are just looking for an engineer now, just think how long before any product sees the light of day."
Need input. Maybe somebody left and theyw ant a replacement. That could mean we'd see something in 2-3 months. Maybe they need somebody just to get started, that could mean as much as 18 months. Maybe they're just testing the market. Sorry, really can't help ya here.
"How about an old copy of Win98SE instead? It would take up less system resources, be cheaper, and it's not going to have many stability issues if your're just using it to play games with instead of installing a bunch of other apps. It also doesn't have that whole registering problem that XP came out with. "One disc to install them all..."
Ugh, no, that wouldn't be my first choice. The stability alone would be painful. XP's got some memeory management stuff that makes it far more stable than 98. It may take a little more resources, but it wouldn't take long for anybody to spot the difference. It doesn't take much to pollute 98's memory.
The registerring problem with XP isn't such a BFD either. Though I do feel it's a valid complaint, I'll be honest, I haven't had a problem with it.
"Do you really think a site full of Linux people, run on Linux computers, and owned by a Linux company is the place to advertise Microsoft software effectively? "
Why not? It gives ya'all a place to criticize MS at every turn hoping to convince the rest of the world that M$ is bad news and must be stayed away from at all costs!!!!
Or maybe you just don't realize that this site isn't 100% populated by Linux users. But my first version is more dramatic.
"Now, can we get back to feeling sorry for people that steal music please?"
I thought we were worried about the people downloading music that haven't been proven to have actually stolen any.
"Silhouette #1: "Yeah, how pathetic. Slashdot loser."
Yeah that's not a standard MST3k response. They don't call the characters names too often. It'd be more like:
"Check out "From that display of competitiveness over there, I'd say Chip Monk is still searching for his nut!"
"Does this mean that Disney licensed the MST3K parody commentary bit for their DVD's commentary track on Muppets From Space?"
Doubtful. They're not calling it Miss Terry Sign Ass The Ater.

"I think you can draw your own conclusions."
So... you should arrive at a conclusion based on whatever your impression of them is?
Don't get me wrong, it's an interesting detail, but I wouldn't go as far as drawing conclusions.

"I wonder how long before the anti-trust lawsuits kick in this time round."
Never. Otherwise this question would be 'insightful' every time MS makes some inroads somewhere.
"Have you ever even seen a real nurse?"
Oo ooo ooo I getta make a rare Married with Children reference!
"It's ennnnnnnnema tiiiiiiiiiiime!"
Man, that's like using a Q in scrabble.
"(hand in there buddy!) "
Uh, that was supposed to be 'hang in there', not hand... Please don't.. uh fogetaboudit.
"Why would I use my DS to call my friend on his DS even if it were free?"
You wouldn't because you're not 10 years old and playing with a friend of yours.
"Otherwise, we can't call ourselves geeks anymore. :) "
I thought we lost our right to do that when we started modding up people for thinking cell phones shouldn't have cool gizmos on them.

"Well, since Sony's already sorta' doing this on the PSP (and they've got the better hardware for it IMHO)"
Except for the stylus interface.
...Slashdot should multiply all of our moderations by 4.

"What adoption? When was the last time you used a Bluetooth-enabled device to do anything useful?"
I think somebody just discovered the world's population is greater than himself.
"See also: Amway."
Nah.
"Why do people insist on running things 24x7..."
If you don't know why they need to run it, then how can you suggest they unplug it?
" Short of actually unplugging all of my devices every day, is there any way to disable all of these LEDs so I can actually get some sleep?"
Try a night-mask.
Don't use any gadgets! Use pencil and paper, they're cheap!

"Hell with all that - I just thought of a biggie: Oral contraceptives"
;)
I think those came too late to affect your lifestyle a whole heck of a lot.
