Just to clarify: I'm not a supporter of MS. That would imply that I'm running around saying "MS is great". There is only one thing of MS that I'd call great: Their optical mouse.

I think the reason I come off as a 'supporter' of MS is that I'm not so quick to join in on the FUD campaign that /. constantly launches against MS. A supporter of MS would say "Drop Linux in favor of Windows". All I've said is: "Linux should be envious of Windows' end user experience." The difference is subtle, but it's there. I want Linux (more specifically KDE or Gnome) to be as easy to use as Windows is.

"Of course. This should all be rather obvious. I can't help but feel like I'm being baited for something. :) "

I'm not baiting you into anything. However, your concern isn't totally unfounded. I think you can tell there's an idea there that I didn't express. When I said "Given that it's Open Source...", I didn't fully articulate what was going on in my mind. (Sorry!) I'm not really familir with Open Source, and I'm even less familiar with the licensing of the visuals of that game. For example: Did their license of the code mean that they can only use the original artwork in the game? If I were to make my own rendition of a Melnorme, would I be violating Accolade's (err I may have the wrong company) copyrights on that creation?

I really should have thought more about that question before I submitted it, it mighta been interesting to discuss. I think the window for that opportunity closed, though. Heh.

Frankly, it's a lot easier to talk somebody into clicking icons in Windows than it is to make them type commands in a prompt window. I know this for a fact in that I talk people through troubleshooting stuff over the phone.

"Additionally, I'd say you're a bit of a strange case, using Windows as an artist. Most artists I know use Macs."

Most artists I know use Windows (2k and XP). It's not that Mac is more conducive to artwork, it's because Mac used to be the best platform to run Photoshop and Illustrator on. Not true anymore. Win/PC is the best platform for your buck right now when it comes to artwork. The Mac info was generally true like 5 years ago.

Are you implying that Windows isn't for 'work'? Sorry, I can't quite tell. Well in case you do mean that, hear my story:

I'm a 3D Artist. I do lots of 3D rendering using Lightwave. I do texture painting in Photoshop. I do compositing in After Effects. My computer is *constantly* busy. I'm running Windows 2000, and I don't have stability issues. (I wouldn't dare say that about Win 9X, at best I had 2 days uptime with any of those OS's.)

I get quite a bit of 'work' done, and Windows isn't standing in my way. I have not lost a single render due to Windows or LW instability.

Would Linux be just as stable? Sure. No doubt about it. The thing is, though, Windows is happily doing what I need it to. (And the games you mention are a big plus) If I'm to switch to Linux, it's going to have to be better than Windows, not just caught up.

It's funny really, this article is about supporting Windows. What about supporting Linux? I loathe the idea of telling my mom (who lives 3,000 miles alway) to open a 'shell window' and type in badly spelt commands in a case sensitive manner.

Anyway, rant rant rant. If Windows was such a 'toy OS', I wouldn't be able to depend on it. I know lots of people, all artists, that'll tell you the same thing.

Err right. That might be true in the /. Community, but the reality is that the vast majority of people either really don't care. Outside of Slashot, the real world isn't exactly vindictive against MS. Not everybody's running around being masochistic just for the sake not using MS stuff. "I spent 3 weeks making my Linux box do whatever my Windows box was already doing!" Whatever.

The reason that Opera could be gaining ground is that they made a good product. That's it. Even in the mobile market. I got a chance to use a Zaurus running Opera, and found it to be a rather pleasant experience. It definitely kicked IE on PocketPC's butt.

However, I'm not exactly picketing Opera to make a PocketPC version. Why? I don't browse the web on my PocketPC. It's a horrible experience. Not because IE is bad (although it is, at least for browsing the web) but because the PDA doesn't give you the resolution and speed you need. It works great with Avantgo, though. No complaints there. With AvantGo, the pages are formatted to PocketPC. As long as I have AvantGo (even works wirelessly), then I don't care if it's Opera or IE, or even Mozilla.

Opera doesn't have a whole lot of chance of gaining ground until PDAs become capable of viewing entire web pages. I don't think that tech is very far away. LCD technology has gotten a lot better in the DPI realm. It won't be more than a year or two before those tiny devices can run at 480 by 640. When that happens, Opera suddenly becomes an interesting alternative.

It's a pity, really. I think Opera deserves more attention on /. than Mozilla as an MS browser alternative. Zealousy abounds I guess. I say that because the only ding I can see against Opera is that it's Ad-supported. I'd care except they show cartoons in that banner window. Heh.
