  2. Controls everything? on AOL's $299 PC · · Score: 3, Informative

"AOL controls everything from the OS to the Word Processor to the web sites their customers browse."??

Give me a break. AOL doesn't care what you do with the PC. Go ahead, wipe it clean and install your favorite alternative OS. All that matters is that you sign a one-year commitment to AOL's dial-up service at $23.90 per month. That $286.80 commitment subsidizes the cost of the computer. AOL has stated (maybe it's even in a linked article) that a common reason given for cancellations is loss of access to a computer. In a few tests they have offered such users a discounted PC rather than let them become former users. As a result of what they have learned they believe that offering a really cheap computer will attract/retain members. They need to do something as they have lost a couple million recently.

Sounds like a business decision to me. But, hey, maybe it's all just part of a vast conspiracy by a big corporation to control everything we do.

... the number one link (hockey team) does not contain "design" or "web" (as a separate word) at all...

    Just a thought here.

Perhaps if the system were ranking based on these three discreet words, "Calgary" would be the focus because there are significantly less sites about Calgary than about "design" or "web." Thus if the Calgary Flames web site dominates the rankings for the search term "Calgary" and the other two words are much more common (with no standout result), then the Calgary site gets top ranking overall. Thus the Calgary Flames get top ranking. Put another way, Calgary + common_word + common_word = Calgary. Interestingly, putting "web design" in quotations still doesn't change that top result. Using the term "website" instead of "web" makes a big difference though. Draw your own conclusions.

The driving directions are often mistaken, generally because they do not always take into account one-way streets and prohibited turns.

That's exactly why they have these fools driving around. The maps already exist, they are not creating them from scratch. They are observing the local roads/turns/restrictions for errors in the mapping data and any changes. The idea is to get clean data so you do not have the problems you mentioned.

  8. A subtle prod to upgrade, or a bluff? on Apple Forcing Panther Upgrade for Security Patch · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is a typical Apple bluff. Of course they want everyone to upgrade (and pay $129 yet again), and hope to encourage users to do so with new features (such as the drool-worthy Expose). Apple has many times tried to cut off support for earlier version of an OS and had to eventually relent. Sometimes it takes a lawsuit for them to do so. OS X is just getting some great press so it would be very damaging if the bad press from this decision serves to highlight a security vulnerability in what is otherwise being lauded as much more secure by design than any flavor of Windows. Expect Apple to quietly issue a patch for 10.2.

Take a look at this page from a Treocentral review of the 600. You'll notice that it is only slightly longer than the 300 and no wider or thicker. So if you could jam a Treo 300, or any Palm handheld for that matter, in your pocket without your bulge drawing unwanted attention you should be OK with the new Treo.

I would recommend going to a CompUSA or Best Buy and seeing how it fit in your pocket, but with those overly-sensitive alarm cables you could really draw attention to yourself.

I'd like to take a break from the rhetoric and criticism to point out a silver lining in this. The actions of the RIAA in this instance will serve as a wakeup call to millions of Internet users that they cannot fully hide behind anonymity online by using a clever alias. Too many people feel that they are shielded by their online pseudonym and are not responsible for their actions. Whether is is simple incivility in an online discussion forum, or outright criminal action people act far differently online because their real name is not revealed. Maybe it's a small and insignificant thing, but I'd like to see some people get pulled out from behind online identities like "munkeyspanker" to demonstrate that we are all still responsible for our actions. OK, break over, flame away.

"movie piracy = death of dialogue based movies."

This is wrong. A good director (or, more precisely, cinematographer) can make a dialogue based movie have more powerful images than any action flick.

I think the issue though is that even in an age of rampant piracy of movies through downloads a big-budget action movie can draw moviegoers to the theater with its enormous screen and million dollar sound system. Thus it's the movies that depend less on the theater experience (the "dialog-based movies") which would suffer more. That's how I take the argument anyway.

Plus it would give Apple a marketing boost to claim several million songs instead of several hundred thousand. Even if a large percentage were not of high enough quality to warrant a record label contract (not necessarily an indictment of their artistry these days) it still adds to the bottom line total. And quantity sells.

I'm with you on separating these unsigned bands. But not so much segregating them into a no-label ghetto, but rather highlighting the good stuff as iTunes exclusives.

The article (at Slate which is part of MSN but acts independently of Microsoft) complains of Google searches skewing toward shopping. Their example if how a query on "apple" gives pages of links to Apple Computer and the 50th entry is the first dealing with actual apples. I don't know about you, but if I were looking for information on apples I would type "apples" into the search field and not "apple." If fact if I do type "apples" into the Google search field in my Safari browser the first result is this:

"Learn all about apples, growing and using them, and where to pick your own apples at the Apples and More website developed by University of Illinois..."

The second is a link to the Washington State Apple Commission. Hmmm, perhaps their example was chosen because it gave the result they wanted.
