I want a cell phone that: * I do not need to carry around * I cannot forget to take with me
What about a sticker phone, or built into clothing. or in your access/identification badge at work that is hanging around your neck anyway.
I pay 10 for a plain T-shirt, 20 if there was a fashion guy who 'designed' a print. Probaly made for less then 0.5 by child labour in Asia. How much for a cheap cell phone these days? And for these 20, I still get wet and cold in the rain.
I'll happily spend 100 on this shirt, if it fits, keeps me warm and dry, and includes some conductive interwoven fabric for connecting your central unit containing your personal 'SIM card'/ID card/credit card and settings. I will combine this with a 'small' wrist unit for functionality when on the road: * reading the time, having an alarm * storing some MB's * dialing a number * reading my heart rate when sporting * communicating to more performant unit at home (PC)
Intelligent clothing is what i would like to see, and current cell phone functionality can all be included. People could even have the fictional e-Ink displays on the front or back of their shirts.
Buying the extended version of LOTR DVD or going to a Harry Potter movie does not make one a nerd or geek... Reading/. does not make you a nerd.
There 'appear' to be more nerds, but this is just a fashion trend... it will pass. It is just another mass-marketing phenomena.
You know who you are! I, for one, do not pretend to be a nerd or geek or whatever. I just like fantasy, science, science-fiction, philosophy, technology, computers and books, and collecting all previous mentioned.
Yes, but...
There will also be a shift in the requirements and specifications for the vacant jobs. Inventing, improving and maintaining the machines/robots will need higher qualified people then McDo staff. The less intelligent (or less educated) people will loose their job. The more intelligent people will keep theirs. Will the more intelligent working people feed the less intelligent, then considered lazy and dumb people in society? Don't think so...
We will need to rethink society before this happens, otherwise we will have to live trough the difficult times this could bring us. A big mass of unemployed people wandering the streets could bring crime and instability in society.
But that's just the opinion of another simple/.er
Building a secure network is not all about users passwords. It's about fighting on all levels to prevent major damage to the systems or company you work for. As a sysadmin, we don't care about black hats. If they want info really bad, they will get it anyway. Securing a network is about taking simple measures to reduce the damage taken:
Virusses are more of a threat in a Windows environment then bad passwords, so keep data files updated
Taking backups and know how to restore them is a simple and effective measure to prevent data loss
Keep your firewall updated, and the servers who listen on port 80
Don't loose time training the users to choose hard to guess passwords... It is a waste of time.
I don't care if most users passwords are easy to guess. They only got User access anyway.
Being an Admin or root however, you have a responsibility of having good passwords...
Most people's info or access rights are not important anyway, so why not let them use easy passwords. You get less calls to the Helpdesks that way...
I know what _every_ button on my TV remote does, but I'm still suspicious about those "Scroll Lock", "Break", and "SysRq" keys on my PC keyboard.
A long time ago, when I worked on a PC for the first time, I also questioned when we should use these keys. Well, 10 years later, I still don't use them. Simplifying the keyboard by removing obsolete keys, and add some new ones (NOT THE WINDOWS KEY!) would make a difference for the unexperienced...
What does the 'Control' key control?
Which alternatives provides the 'Alt' key?
What is shifted when I press the 'Shift' key ... And why would I want to go 'Home' when I need to work for 3 more hours;-)

That would be really stupid. If the machine is not working anymore, it cannot do DDOS attacks and infect others. In real life the most deadly virusses (Ebola) never infect the whole world because it kills people too fast. So a good virus like this will not format C:
* good for the economy: it requires you to upgrade your pc again to an Intel P4, which will in turn revive the economy and make Bill richer by the stocks that rise.
* easier to install: you don't need to install any Service Packs, patches and fixes because the OS is new, and bugs need still to be discovered and exploited
* 'Windows' branding: people will not know anymore which version of Windows they are running (there are so many...) so they just refer to it as 'Windows'.
* licensing: you will have to pay for this version, so the next time poor MS will actually be able to write an Operating System.. NOT.
* you have to keep hardware manufacturers busy with writing new drivers... they have the staff for this!
* seriously? I have no f%$#king clue...
I pay for connectivity and bandwidth.
It's a good thing ISP's kick off the infected machines.
On the other side, people who have infected machines are not to blame, most of them have
no clue what happens nor do they know how to stop it or prevent this...
They will learn this way that Internet is like a public road, and they need to follow some basic rules/driving lessons (like do whatever possible to not spreading virusses) to be allowed on the highway.

So, YES, KICK THEM OUT.
