You guys on the "don't install SP2!" bandwagon need to wise up.
You know, "wising up" is what the IT field needs the most...After having waited 15 years in this industry for it to happen, I have yet to see a glimpse of wisdom in this
The article clearly states that those people are not techs but "people with money". The switch to Apple seems an obvious choice if you can afford an expensive computer and you are neither a big techie or a hard-core gamer. I fail to see exactly where is the impact of the IPod here. Is that because it's the same "people with money" who can afford to buy one?
I was contracting for the past 3 years and moved out of that. Here's what I've reckoned:
Compared to a permanent position, paying for retirement, an accountant, your own holidays, health insurance and such is a lot of hassle, and very often, doesn't fill the difference between your salary and what you end up getting in your pockets.
Permanent employees generally HATE you since they think you make much more money than them for the same amount of time.
Having to find your next contract is a pain in the arse when you come back home from a long day of work and have to deal with all that.
So unless you find a niche where you can make a lot of money in a very specialized field, it's hardly worth it. But that also depends a lot on your personality. If you are willing to cope with accountance and such, and managing your own business, go for it. It can be fun too
Now that sucks. Having known that before, I would not have pre-ordered...All my friends are not around and that was the MAIN point of buying something like WOW.
The risks for creating an MMO are gigantic compared
It's not as "gigantic" a risk as you state. No company will take a "gigantic" risk.
Also, considering Blizzard past history of good quality games, it's very doubtful that marketers would ever consider WOW a "risk" (because Blizzard does make incredibly good games ALL the time.)
you're talking about companies spending 10 - 20 million dollars to develop the thing
Well..your argument is not good enough, Half-life2 costed 40M$ and the retail price is roughly the same as WOW, with no other extra cost.
Let's face it: Blizzard did a great business move since
They have a player base that WILL buy WOW no matter the cost
They WILL be successful since they always are because this company is serious about creating good quality stuff and is known for that
They already had the expertise in-house to create WOW
So basically, they are going to make more profit then ever just by capitalizing on their experience.
And guys, I hate business managers, but THAT is a business that is run by clever people!
How do I extract my downloaded copy with the CD key and send it to you? Aside from the fact that it prevents me from installing/de-installing the game, I guess this prevents any CD-Key hijacking.
Software installation using any of the package managers above is usually easier than your average software installation in Windows.
No, no, no, no, no. That really is a/.ter answer. This is not true. Linux is known for being a package hell. I cannot count how many packages I could not achieve install because of some existing yet missing librairies, or the version is ok but urpmi reported not ok, or all mirrors are gone, or..or....etc.
At least on windows, you rarely have more to do than click "Setup" and off you go.
Last example: xmltv: NO F...WAY to get all the packages updated with Mandrake 9.1. How to make it work? Upgrade to MDK10. How? Download the whoe distro...re-install...call that an update? I expect to have to ru urpmi to switch from 9.1 to 10, but of course, it does NOT work
If those guys achieve what they claim, there will be one more happy Linux user in this world. Right now, it's a frustrated user...
Note: I consider myself an experimented developer, if I have troubles with updating using urpmi, talk about my mum!
That is actually a good idea. Nothing's more frustrating than spending hours being an idiot trying to crack some game, think you've succeeded and then something breaks off or acts wierdly..
Yes I bought HL2 - And I actually don't find it entertaining at all.
You guys have the choice between a wicked extreme right-wing wannabe-man-yet-looks-like-a-woman, or the worst well-thinking neo-con of the planet.
And I thought Powell was a bad guy...
Oh..and by the way, in french, "Neo-con" would translate into "new moron". In case that clues you in about Wolfowitz skills to screw up every freedom that remains
Symantec products are complete crap.
Since CrashGuard, I never used any Symantec product again. I own 5 machines and everyone is strongly disallowed to ever install ANY Symantec product.
I don't know what this company does with their softwares, but ALL of them have this nice ability to fuck up everything for no reason.

Actually you are completely right. White noise probably doesnt compress very well..
Let's ask my dad, he knows all about it;-) (my dad, as yours, as every dad knows everything)
You should consider yourself lucky. "Niches" are difficult to find nowadays. Big bucks have taken over the IT industry. In 10 years, IT came from rockstars-packed companies to wannabe-nothing-disgruntled people.
I work in IT and had to create online trainings for a major financial company in USA. I had to read through the whole thing.
How it affected me?
I had a nausea for 3 days after reading through the first chapters.
I felt like I was back in middle-age seeing all the restrictions on privacy being enumerated one after the other.
I felt sorry for all you people who actually have to apply it or live with it.
It was the definitive reason why I would never immigrate to USA, although I've been given many occasions to do so.
Honestly and IMHO from my outsider point of view, americans should fight to have this bill removed. It's a threat to personal freedom and a dangerous shift toward fascist practices. (and YES, I had to read this thing! So I am not speculating)
You know, "wising up" is what the IT field needs the most...After having waited 15 years in this industry for it to happen, I have yet to see a glimpse of wisdom in this
Granted for the rest, but
I'm not a sociopath. remains to be proven.Hint: you are posting on slashdot.
Clearly the article lacks meaningful statistics
You are one lucky husband!
I am still wondering how to get my wife to touch a video game for her first time in life.
I am hoping WOW will do the job ;-)

Well...less whiners soon since Java is going to be open-sourced.
Trouble with being married is that you cannot play as much as you used to.
I found myself playing less than 50% of the time I used to play games.
Take that as a figure for your budget, and you get your one game a month ;-)
But believe me..after marriage..budget is not the issue when it comes to video games ;-)
Geee..

Hi I have never played HL1. I play HL2 and it's GREAT! You should go ahead if you like the FPS genre with some exploration component in it.
That doesn't remove the exotism of down-under...
He just moved to another country.
Would that be India? There are million of lone coders there.
Rice vs Wolfowitz?
What a nice country!

Punk songs compress very well, so does white noise. I guess you can achieve a 0.1MB for a 10 minutes of roaring sounds and intestinal blurbing.
Geez..I had nausea since the 2nd of november, now I think I need to puke..
