Where did you hear that mormons shut down 104.1? From what I understand, it was bought out by the company that owns 105.7 (not to mention 94.7, amongst others) then converted into a wonderful 80's station that makes me want to shove pencils in my ears whenever my cousin makes me listen to it in the car. Now, I honestly don't have any data to back it up but I'd never heard anything even close to mormons buying it.
...to the dude's story? Red Hat is making its money selling to big buisiness. Same way Oracle does. Same way a lot of companies do. The desktop market the not only one out there.
...all you can do is bitch about it. Because if companies want to do the research they can. Monitoring responses in the brain to stimuli is legitiment. Using the results in ads is an exercise of free speech. I'm just glad I don't watch television very often.
I mean, after all the U.S. government does let us in on all of its secret military operations. If crimes against humanity did happen odds are is all we'd get about it would be rumors. That's a very scarey thought considering some of the rumors I've heard.
And another thing: Years ago I saw a 60 minutes interview with a pentagon offical about Gulf War syndrome. The guy was so nervous you could see the sweat glinting on his uppper lip. He had something to hide, that's for sure.
.05 (1/20) of one ounce (28 grams) is 1.4 grams. That's a lot of coke, unless you're talkin' cola. I'm not sure about now, but back in the day i think it was about $100/g (never much liked the idea of cocain myself, though I could find a real number if anyone wanted).
But anyway I'll start buying downloadable music when 3 things happen:
1) I get on broadband (fuck the Man for keeping me off)
2) They offer it in a nice standard open format that loses minimal quality
3) And some nice indie labels start doing it.
Remember, as part of a company you need to help keep the place going. Making it their fault if files are lost won't make things better. Most of the time it is their fault anyway. But windows is a bitch and data does die, and always the day (or minute) before backup as murphy proscribes.
I agree with most of the earlier posters: stick their files on a fileserver and back that up as often as is required. That way if, i mean when, windows bites the dust they can continue their work from another computer, AND nothing is lost. The easy way out is not always the best way.
In this house you will obey the laws of themodynamics!
It's always been a problem with the magnetic techniques of hard drives to actually erase data. Even after formatting and overwriting, you can still read old bits because of the inprecision in the writing techniques (see this article). Would this eliminate such a threat?
Try running a public computer lab sometime, and working IT for an entire University College. They're a weekly occurance, if not more (it amazes me how people who make a living by learning can know almost nothing about computers). I didn't think virii existed to any real extent until I began work there.
but, as I read your post more closely, I wonder if it was a an attempt at ironic humor (after all everyone knows that using a condom is anything but idiotic) and perhaps the moderator didn't catch it. Or you could be a lame ass troll... I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt.
I'm not not licking toads...
You get into the zone and you're all relaxed, then you realize how fast your dragon is going and you get excited, then it slows down again. Sounds extremely frustrating.
I was downloading while i was installing, and I had 1 package left, and it asked for disc 3. After filling the office with cursing, I piddled about while I waited for the last iso to be downloaded and burned. yee-haw.
and am posting from it right now. I stuck it on a piece o' crap 233 at work with a history of hardware problems. It's seems to be working fine so far, except that apache wasn't set up to run automaticly and (sigh) NIS was. Oh well, most of that is taken care of and it seems to be working just fine. The install was pretty nice too.
I love the line about how much more money is involved in the IT industry that is the entertainment industry.
And it shows. Computers are calculating nuclear blasts, while America has fallen in love with Britney Spears and pays to see wonderful works of cinematic art like "All About the Benjamins." Think of the quality difference there.
The point is, the general populas couldn't care less, and neither do their duly elected representatives. The shit is going to have to hit the fan before anyone does anything, but with any luck on their side the gross changes will happen slowly enough that not enough people will feel obliged to take action.
I have to get the biggest program I've ever tackled done in the next week or so, and I want my weekend free (for sleep, mostly). Now I can get advise on how to get it done (getting into that programming state of mind has been difficult on this one).
The X files had really gone to crap, but I still loved those guys. The episode that explained their formation was one of my favorites... It's kinda weird, I feel bad for them.
And on an upnote, holy crap my friend was right! he said that they should kill off multiple people to make it actually shocking. I think I might take him to the races with me sometime...
We're all spoiled now a days. I remember blasting away at quake I and II, Starcraft and wonderful games over an unstable 36.6 dialup. I still managed to win some despite the lag.
I really can't see a school turning down any donated PCs. It mentions the cost of integrating it with the current hardware, but I'm sure they could find a use for any old computer as long as it's not that slow. Red tape like this depresses me.
I love this. It's possible for setups like this to do great good all over the world. Imagine farm children in Mexico growing up on the net, and looking up better ways to cultivate the land. This has the potential to shift the world towards a better balance of wealth. Of course there is the possibility of people preying on these kids, but the potential benefits far outweigh all the negative consequences I can think of. I'd like to see an organization form for this purpose.
The only connection i can get at home is a 31.2 kbps dialup. Popup ads kill this, as does software trying to download. It seriously effects my ability to find things on the web. This is a bigger problem than annoyance.

PC Prices to Rise?

Let's kill the poor we can't draft while we're at it.
I run a computer lab at a state university, and I can say that Dell's PC's are not as bad as you'd like to make out. Admittedly, they do have the onboard video and sound, but I always disable the video for a better card. It would be nice to build all of our computers from parts, but the price to the university in man hours would be too much, plus when something inevitibly breaks we wouldn't be able to just dump it onto Dell.
For my personal use, I'd rather build my own PC and put exactly what I want into it. But if I up the scale by ten times, things are easier all around buying complete systems. So if I wanted to replace some old computers in the lab, I'd want to do it now when those 'perks' come at a decent price.
"expected to announce? wouldn't it be better to wait and see if they actually do announce it before using slashdot bandwidth/processor ticks?

Exactly what do you feed those pigeons?

Originally read "Brilliant Spyware" as the spyware being brilliant? I nearly dropped a load when I thought /. was complementing the sneaky bastards.

in short, we're screwed.
Whatever would I do without /.
