Titan A.E. was a great film, but it went a little over budget and didn't quite generate back the revenue it took to create. Fox closed the studios after that (which was a stupid decision, if you ask me.) Don Bluth has made some excellent animated films, and deals with serious subjects better than Disney would. An American Tail, Anastasia, Secret of NIMH, etc... are all great.

I've also never had a positive experience with the MBox. After two returns, my unit still makes digital hash noises when playing back, but recording works fine.

  17. Re:I wait until... on Patching Paranoia - How Fast Do You Patch? · · Score: 2, Interesting

If your ATA/IDE controller is no longer properly recognized by Windows and you can no longer boot because of that, you can usually put the drive right onto the motherboard's built-in IDE adapter and boot successfully, so you can install the drivers for your controller and reboot with them switched back again. Of course this will only work if you're just using an ATA controller or have a RAID1 setup. There's other ways (using the recovery console) to install/load drivers, but I agree, it's pretty tricky.

I didn't have any problems with SP3/SP4 and SQL server.

If this patch had hit millions, I'd be a bit more sympathetic. But only a few thousand (if that) and the issue is pretty moot. At worst, they'd call Microsoft (they get that free support, ya know, because they bought Windows) and a tech would lead them through getting their system back up. Or they'd call one of their tech savvy cousins/nephews/friends to come over and fix the thing.

Just a side-note, but it amazes me that people will insist on using a complex tool (such as a computer) and not be willing to learn the basics about it, or even how to properly maintain it. You don't do that with your car, so why do that with your computer?

1600x1200 is very much playable. True, the FPS dips a bit when the fire fighting gets heavy, but it's still playable (and only slightly under the 30 FPS "max")

I'm at work so I can't exactly post TimeDemo scores, but if you really want them, I can provide them.

The engine was using DirectX, yes, but they only had to design the graphics to work for _one video card_. They cut corners on a lot of things and used nVidia-specific shaders/paths. All of that had to be scrapped/modified in order to make it work with other video cards and be truly DirectX 8/9 compatable.

I agree that no FSAA/AF support sucks, but I have honestly never had much use for FSAA or AF. Doesn't bother me a bit. Night vision and the flashlight work properly on my ATI card. I'll admit the flashlight looks differently than it does on GeForce hardware, though. It's like the ATI flashlight is "brighter". Doesn't bother me though.

About the lag, you mentioned Q3A/CS, game engines which have been around for years and years, and which have gone through countless patches/refinements to get where they are today. I agree the multiplayer could use some work, but it is a good first effort. Better than no multiplayer at all. I'm sure they'll keep improving it.

    2) I seriously doubt Steam destroyed anything, especially Windows. It sounds like your computer had problems to begin with.

In general, if you're going to reinstall, I'd follow these steps:

    1) Format/install OS (Win2k/WinXP)
    2) Install latest chipset drivers (Intel, VIA, AMD, and nVidia all have their own sets) -- very important, and a set a lot of people forget to follow.
    3) Install latest video card drivers, as well as ethernet devices.
    4) Authorize Windows XP (if necessary) -- I learned the hard way that if you authorize XP and then install your chipset drivers, XP will 99% of the time ask you to reauthorize because your hardware has changed significantly.
    5) Install latest service pack for Windows
    6) Install all hotfixes for Windows.
    7) Profit!

It's netlag all the way, I'm sticking with my hundreds-of-players-at-once PlanetSide thanks)

I respectfully disagree. It's a lot more than a direct port. The graphics engine had to be completely reworked to be DirectX compatable. Depending on your card, you should get the best experience possible graphics wise. Playing Halo in 1600x1200 is gorgeous, compared to the 640x480 (or whatever) that the XBox version was running in.

I haven't had too much trouble with the multiplayer, then again I'm on DSL, and not cable/etc., so that might be part of the problem.
