Sorry, but ALGX (Allegience Telecom) is a joke. Their internet services go down at least once a week, apparently due to mis-configured routers. We had them as our ISP (dual T1's) here at work for about 2 years, and just got fed up with the lousy service. We've since switched to another provider and haven't had any downtime whatsoever.
Their tech support is a joke as well. Call them and ask them why your internet is down.. they'll tell you they "are working on it, ETA unknown."
If Doom2 isn't running properly on WinXP, you're doing something wrong. You might want to try one of the Doom(2) "emulators" out there that are native to Windows2k/XP (and that use current 3d and sound hardware,) like Doom Legacy. As a side note, if you ever need to run a DOS app under Windows with proper sound support, check out VDMSound.
Can you imagine a GPL game with the Fellowship of the Ring crossing the Caradhras with these graphics?
Yes, I can, and it's awful.
These graphics remind me of an old landscape generator I had back on my 486. It generated a plasma-looking sky and a 3d landscape you used your mouse to fly over.
Big whoop, but I guess it's cool that the engine was released.
Naw, SciFi Channel is too busy cancelling excellent shows like Farscape, considering cancelling Stargate SG-1, and making wonderful films like Antibody...
Ok, so "Taken" wasn't that bad, but it wasn't really a SciFi Channel-only endeavor.
Sounds like you had some software issues, or a hardware conflict.
There's also the possibility that maybe you don't have a large enough power supply. When the GF1 first came out, people were trying to run it on dinky 150/200watt PS's, and that just doesn't cut it. Especially with older motherboards that don't properly handle AGP voltages.
Sounds like you're either letting your hardware burn up (not enough case ventilation?) or you have power issues, or something unrelated to the nVidia card.
I'll match your list. I've owned a TNT2, a GeForce1, two Geforce2's, a GeForce3 (and GF3 Ti500), a VantaLE, and I have never once had a problem with them.
Good god people, 3D/FX died because it clung to it's own proprietary graphics interface. Overpriced hardware didn't help things, but it's main downfall was not embracing Direct3D and OpenGL when it had the chance.
HardOCP doesn't confirm anything, other than the fact that Best Buy is holding off on pre-orders for now, because they've already presold their quantity so far. There is no official statement anywhere that says that the GeForce FX Ultra is no more, not is there any statement saying the GeForceFX Ultra will not be available again for pre-order (or regular order) soon.
Just a side note, "--r3mix" still does a pretty good job, but is now obsolete. The "--alt-preset" settings have taken over from where r3mix left off. I personally use "--alt-preset extreme" and find it to be pretty darn good. Better than r3mix sometimes..
Just in case you didn't know, the rear speakers are supposed to be facing the _sides_ of the audience, not their backs. This is a common mistake that people make when placing a 5.1 system. When you do a 7.1 setup, the extra two speakers are the ones that get placed in the far rear. In a 5.1 setup, the rear speakers are to the side of the listener, and a little behind them.
This is something I commented on the other day when/. had the article about the FX coming out, and everyone was bitching about the noise level.
The manufacturers are going to be able to come up with their own thermal management solutions if they want, and I'm sure someone is going to come up with something not as loud. (I have watercooling so it's not that big of an issue, I just have to wait for a waterblock for it..)
As for fan replacements, contact the person who made your GeForce card. They can probably sell you one directly or refer you somewhere.
When the user logs on, the app turns itself back on, and BYPASSES the domain policy on not installing software.
Uhm, why didn't you just go into the control panel item for "Automatic Updates" and disable it there? (Or for Windows XP, it's under "My Computer"->Properties)
If that's not annoying enough, W2k SP3 breaks some software we use to do business by making some registry changes, so all of a sudden I have 100 users who can't use our primary business app.
Sounds like it was a poorly-coded app. I'd be interested to know what exact "registry changes" were made from SP2 to SP3 that broke your program.
Now I've got Gator and Bonzai Buddy and KaZza running on my network.
Wait, you've got a firewall but you allow these programs to make outbound and inbound connections?
What admin in their right mind would allow something at MS called "wutrack.bin" to be accessed? Plus, SP3 adds a directory something like %root%\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM". A directory called "DRM"? I don't think so!
Although you fufilled Slashdot's "$" and "Winblows" quotas for the day in your post, why is this modded as Funny? Should be modded as "Totally Stupid and Untrue".
Ive read that the patch before this thing went big was a bitch. Basically it was a lot of manual this and that updating and rebooting. Basically this meant a lot of people couldnt get aproval from management to patch the server.
I don't understand where the difficulty comes in. You run the service pack, it extracts to your root drive (or whereever you want it to, actually.) You then run setup.bat -- That's it! You're patched!
Some have said they applied the patch and still were vunerable./Some have said the patch fucked their server.
It worked for me, and I can't speak of the ones it didn't work on. SP3 came out a few weeks ago, and admins should have at least had that installed.
Also, I think I read that the cumulitive SQL server patch that was supposed to be out a long time ago finally came out as soon as this worm hit.
Bullshit. The patch to fix the overflow problem came out half a year ago. And the service pack (which includes the patch) came out a few weeks ago.
It seems like any jackass can be a hardware review site nowadays. They just check the 3d Mark scores, notice how they're not that much faster than current ATi, and then say the card sucks. What the hell is up with that?
Another thing.. about the cooling system. Look, the cooler is just part of the reference design. Other manufacturers are no doubt going to come up with their own solutions to the cooling problem that aren't perhaps as loud. I have my watercooling system, so I don't have to worry about such things.
As for people complaining about the price, I didn't hear anybody whining when the 9700 pro/etc. came out with a hefty price tag. And I can bet within a month or two of the FX coming out the price will drop $50 or more, easily. And once manufacturers start making their own boards and designs, it will probably drop even more.
There's nVidia fan boys and there's ATi fan boys. I've always tried to be in the middle, but I've constantly been upset by ATi's horrible drivers. I have owned 4 ATi cards in my years of computing, and all 4 are now sitting in the closet as junk (including my all-in-wonder radeon 7500) because of their driver sets. Their new "Catalyst" drivers are a step in the right direction (nVidia got it right the first time) but they still have major issues.
Here's the information straight from Bungie as well.
Question: Is Halo an Xbox-exclusive, or will it ever ship for PCs/Macs as originally planned?
Answer: There WILL be Mac and PC versions of Halo. Go back and read that sentence again. Notice the clear, straightforward nature of the answer. Note that this answer comes directly from Bungie, the makers of Halo, and is posted on our official site. If that's not good enough for you, check the press release from our parent company Microsoft, or the websites of Gearbox and Westlake Interactive (who are porting the PC and Mac versions respectively).
It doesn't matter what the guy in the forum said, or what the guy in the magazine said, or what the guy at the software store said. All that matters is what Bungie said. And Bungie has said, time and time again, that PC and Mac versions of Halo will ship. People are working on these games right now. Anyone who tells you otherwise does not know what he is talking about.

Yeah yeah. It's a dupe. Funny that not a single reader emailed me in almost 2 hours to tell me.
Yeah, cause, you know, we're Slashdot editors.
Do people really even subscribe to Slashdot? Doesn't seem worth it.

"FUD" comes to mind.
Sorry, I missed the part where we stopped talking about the Windows Critical Update Checker and started talking about the Windows Media Player.
You should if the seatbelt doesn't work. Hell, you might even be able to blame Ford is the seatbelts are too difficult to operate or hard to find.
And if Ford offered to replace the faulty seatbelt for free, would you still blame them and be all salty?
Sheesh. I'm going to start Linux/Unix/FreeBSD/Sparc/OpenSourceSoftware bashing soon. Maybe that'll catch on.
The genesis/snes cart? That was an advertisement if I've ever seen one.
I'm talking about the service pack, not the fix for the overflow vulnerability.
The point I was trying to make was that SP3 was released before this attack occured, and everyone should have been updated/upgraded by now.
Although you fufilled Slashdot's "$" and "Winblows" quotas for the day in your post, why is this modded as Funny? Should be modded as "Totally Stupid and Untrue".

Uhm, IIS isn't part of the default installation package of Windows 2000 Pro. Only in Windows 2000 Server does it get installed by default.
Besides, there's always "Add/Remove Components". Sheesh.

GearBox software is the one doing the conversion.

FYI, Halo is coming out on the PC sometime this year. Probably around April or May, is what I last heard.
