Nah, don't be embarrassed. Aqua is really good with palettes. You probably wouldn't notice any difference at all for awhile... unless you had a desktop with a major gradient or something in it.

Just replying to my own post with more info...

The cross-fading desktops feature has a new bug (on a 12" PB anyway) where the secondary monitor - in my case a Sony 17" CRT - screws up the transition effect.

The PowerBook is running at 1024x768/32bit on its main display, and 1280x1024/32bit on the secondary (NOT mirroring).

During the crossfade the first picture suddenly appears to squish to have the horizontal resolution, pushed to the left, and the palette gets munged (purple). It snaps back to normal after the fade but it ain't pretty.

An odd thing was that it reset my monitor settings back to 16bit colour ('Thousands'), so you may want to watch out for that. Aqua does such a good job of dithering you probably wouldn't even notice at first.

Another odd thing was that my display went a little funky when doing the cross-fading desktop pictures just a second ago. Fixed itself after the transition was complete, no idea what that's about.

If you're superstitious like me don't forget to do the Repair Permissions trick - its the new Rebuild Desktop - although I had no issues there either.

While I agree with the sentiment often, I don't agree in the case of 'videophones'. It helps for the same reason that the phone is sometimes better than email. Subtle nuance and expression is lost in the translation.

Humans are best equipped to interact with another human face because of millions of years of evolution. Sure, I don't always want to use a videophone for every situation... most of the time I don't even want voice, just email (or time-shifted text message, if you will) is fine.

I use the phone when I want to convey something a little more complex emotionally. Those things get totally lost in email.

I use iChatAV to do videoconferenced meetings essentially when I need telepresence. That is, when I require not only voice but actually seeing the other person's face. This is good for clients or other brainstorming-type meetings where you need to kind of witness another person's thought process and facial ticks. You get a lot more out of what they're trying to say.

  10. Evolution of the Game on Games and the 'Geek Stereotype' · · Score: 4, Interesting
I figure game development is in a stage of creativity right now somewhat akin to that of film in the 1940s. It needs time to evolve beyond that first blush of commercial success and acceptance.

Some basic structures, or 'language' of the medium has been worked out now, and has proven to be popular with the masses as an accepted entertainment medium, especially ever since someone noticed that games revenue had outpaced that of the film industry. So naturally there is some rabid capitalism going on insofar as people know a few formulas that work... i.e.

    - the first person shooter
    - the role-playing game (which is generally not really roleplaying, but whatever)
    - the racer
    - the fight game
    - the simulators (and all derivations thereof)

.. and so on. We can name them just like that. And yeah it gets pretty boring. (For instance I've pretty much given up on all FPS shooters until they do something different. They're all Quake to me.)

I want a game like Memento. Or Jacob's Ladder. Or imagine some game that used one of those realtime 3D shaders like grayscale pencil-sketch throughout, in some kind of Poe-inspired adaptation... We will see these kinds of things someday but it'll take 'Directors' (do we still call them that?) to do daring things with the medium and push the boundaries of the game's narratives.

Interactive storytelling is a real bitch to get your head around in any appreciable way. Currently I lean towards really open-ended titles like GTA as leading the way in that sort of gameplay, that tries new mixtures of nonlinear play with prescripted events. Or Molyneux's stuff - damn him for going all Xboxy on me - those guys are really thinking about new kinds of games.
