He did it with C#, so suddenly all that geek spirit shit goes out the window. This is the article to say "why do this -- pointless" and not get modded down.
Explain where I said its going to stop them from organizing. I said it "takes away an avenue for organization". You've got a point to make, that Twitter isn't important and hasn't had any impact on modern politics or political movements, and you're looking for any excuse to make it.
I was speaking mainly about developers. I agree that approaching the average user of gimp or firefox with that attitude is pretty ridiculous. But a dev utilizing OpenSSL? LibCurl? LibC? Generally devs who are working in code are going to end up in code they they didn't write sometimes - that's one of the benefits of open source in the first place. At the same time, I'm probably not going to dive past libc into the kernel - we all draw the line somewhere I guess.
I wouldn't call myself a hard core open source advocate (can you write evil closed source software for profit and still be so?), but I tend to agree with him. If I use an LGPL library in my code and I find a bug and fix it, its in my best interest to report the bug back and get it rolled into the official distro. It doesn't cost me much of anything, and now I don't need to repatch when a newer improved version of the library comes out. I guess maybe if you're talking about developing whole features for items unrelated to your core product, then yes it might not be in your direct interest, but there is a good amount of indirect benefit I can see coming out of that (community good will where maybe someone fixes your bugs, control over direction of the software, etc). Companies can compete on many tiers and still collaborate on mutually beneficial (often commodity) projects. If anything Linux is proof of that.
I wouldn't classify myself as an apple hater. It obviously works for millions and they aren't affected. I'm under no illusion that running Apple unapproved apps is a killer feature for other platforms, but I do think its disingenuous to say that DRM (which many people feel the need to circumvent and which Apple actively tries to enforce with updates) is a "benefit".
It's about as unrestricted as a system which is completely restrictive can be. Application signing is a good thing, but I should be able to trust other sources (including myself) and not have to rely on the mothership to tell me what I can and cannot run on my own device.
And if Facebook is a cookie cutter condo complex of conformity, MySpace is a shitty shantytown of shameless "individualism". And I guess most personal websites are tree houses nailed together with primary colors and blink tags.
Why bother arguing with someone like the GP? The people that go to the lengths necessary to justify hyperbole like "USA == NAZIs!, one in the same!" obviously have some other need or fulfillment being met by such statements, and have worked themselves into a corner that any example of authoritarian abuse proves the point. You can't win such an argument because anyone believing such a ridiculous statement can't possibly be reasoned with. The same goes for the other end of the political spectrum: there's a point of irrationality you don't come back from with logic, or if you do its only to flip completely to the other side. If this guy wasn't shouting "USA == NAZIS" he'd be shouting "USA == LANDING PAD FOR JESUS, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT". Really just depends on life experience and who his parents were, the genetics are going to push him to one end or the other.
First link Google gave me. SMB3 was $70 Christmas 1990. Most games (from my personal recollection) ranged in the $40-$70, even in the SNES era. So how is that adjusting for inflation I'm paying less now for video games, but getting "more for less". Unless you're specifically saying that games then were better, in which case we're onto a matter of opinion and not something worth debating.
Stop being dense. Games are an item that have gotten cheaper over the years in real dollars (along with computers and airline tickets) you were implying that some how you are now paying more for less, which is not the case.
The step where the light goes through the LCD isn't perfectly efficient (in fact its a lot inefficient) so this step just helps recover some of that waste light and convert it back to power. If the LCD didn't emit lots of waste light this wouldn't do anything, and the batteries on these devices wouldn't bet as hard hit.
Wouldn't the inconvenience be on the protesters either way?
Previous protests have blocked the stations from effectively being in service as passengers had trouble getting on/off the trains, and servicing those stations put the entire system behind schedule. Not to mention that putting protesters in contact with irate passengers who are late for work or whatever might cause a few fist fights, thus requiring the intervention of the trigger happy BART police, thus causing more "accidental" shootings, thus causing more protests...
You can see why a pragmatic manager might just snip this in the bud and inconvenience a lesser percentage of passengers.
Lets be fair, copyright violation is not theft, no matter who does it or what copyright is violated. Nothing was stolen, nothing was "lost" here. The original code is still safe and sound.
I think it's funny that you rail against the lack of sense of humor (apparently gone from the good old days of "hot grits") and completely miss the parents joke.
In the long run it would probably be better for him to take a position where they did know about the odd viking related behaviors. Its not to say that a "normal guy" and a "weirdo" couldn't both do an adequate job, but in a corporate environment you're better off finding one that is "viking weirdo" friendly as even if you are hired by keeping it a secret your advancement and career might be severely hindered.
Then again, we're talking about academia, so I can't see why it would matter to let your freak flag fly.
DUDE. Let me start out by saying that you are my freaking hero. You TOTALLY mega-slammed that guy, and boy did he deserve it! "BItZstream" HA! What a total joke. Lets just say that I've been following your career since you started here one year ago. I even called you out in my regular/. commentary column "The Slash" in my annual "best newcomers 2010" feature. My title for you? "Possible Funny Guy". Can I call them or what? Now, I don't want to get ahead of myself, or freak you out or give you a big head leading you to make arrogant posts, but your career has the current trajectory of others that have ended up in the Hall of Fame. Lets just leave it at that, shall we? Keep the +5 Funny's coming, that's your ticket to/. stardom!
So you posted, complained about the mod, and then posted again to congatulate yourself. a) get out more, b) if we're never again subject to your so poignant and timely wit, _that's a good thing_.
Dude, Origin isn't dead! It even has a store now! RTFA & HAND :)
Probably the same value as pumps, air, shox, lights, neon, pockets, gels, etc. About $50 on the pricetag. Value!

Yes because that's exactly what I implied.
Its only 10 million strong if the 10 million know about each other. Banning communication channels like twitter takes away an avenue for organization.
I stream stuff off my android tablet w/ Twonky and it works just fine. Does that count as Linux? Maybe its the codecs you're using?

And I can see if your friends are hot before I decide to go to the show and rape you! Amazing! Thanks, Ticketmaster!
What about an iGoogle profile page?

And apparently yours is blurry. That's a man, man.

They take that before a CS101 class? Seems like almost every engineering program has that in its first semester these days.
