    That's fine, have both channels available. I buy a lot of games off the direct download section of the store instead of going to get a disc, but when I want to get something right after it comes out I have to get a disc. I then immediately install the disc to drive, and really I'd love to just toss it in a box at that point, but I still have to have it to actually play the game. They should allow you to "lock" the disc to a particular console (until its used on a different console) and let you run straight off the drive, AND allow day 1 sales of full titles in the store. The PC market is already there in this regard, not sure what they have to lose by doing it for consoles. (Plus they'll get a higher margin off the game since there's no middleman).

    Just turn off swap if you've got that much. Once I went to 16GB on my workstation I turned it off and haven't had a problem yet. (And its not like you won't figure out quickly if you are running into issues).

    More than that, it doesn't even matter. 80% of what Joe needs to do is accomplished by "find the web browser", so it doesn't really matter what you run on the desktop as long as there's a big clear "Click here for internet" button. The other 20% Joe does on his iPhone.

    Its what you DON'T bring to the party that matters - that is, a wireless printer. Instant printing has a niche at some types of events, so I can see this filling that. Sure, you can bring a printer with you. You could also bring a laptop with you. That isn't the point of this.

    Sorry, won't ever happen. It seems like nerds who grow up to be in the media still project their common teenage fantasy that suddenly the world turns upside down and all the nerds are cool. Hint: the guy hunched over his phone/calculator or whatever and writing programs on it is still and always will be a nerd. But like most of us he's having a good time and doesn't give a shit what label you assign him.

    Also I'd love shove the guy who keeps pushing the term "Maker" in a locker.

    I'm guessing he would have whined about whatever story he clicked on. "Star Wars story AGAIN!" "New robots...stop posting commercial SPAM, homebrew robot stories only please!" etc etc etc. Then again, the whiners are as much a part of this site as anything else. If /. had comments from story 1, story 2 would have had a comment like

    "Back in the day (yesterday), we used to get REAL stories. Chips & Dips has gone to hell! I'm out of here, let these retarded three digit users have this crap."

    Why does it have to be 2G acceleration? At the distances and rates you're talking about, the acceleration phase is a small fraction of the actual time to travel, unless you have some magical device that can accelerate you near some limit of C.

    Ok, but they have millions of users. The vocal 185 that posted on the bug may represent 1 million users or may represent 185. This was a bug, not a design preference, and given the tasks they need to do saying "Hey, we made a decision, sorry, not taking anymore comments" on this bug is not that big a deal.

    Mad Men, Weeds, Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Breaking Bad, Archer, The Office, etc etc. And that's whats just on now. Go back over the past ten years and you've got the Sopranos, The Shield, Lost, Arrested Development, and of course BSG. Reality shows not withstanding, I'll take the past decade of TV over any other. Hell, they even brought Futurama, Family Guy, and now Arrested Dev. back. There will always be formula cop shows, canned laughter sitcoms, and (now) reality shows, but I find there's always 4-10 hours of great programming a week - shit that never would have made it on the air 15 years ago.

    Right, because your new store is going to have the content, delivery system, marketing, customer base, customer trust, logistics, and funding to defeat Amazon. I'd like to help! I'm guessing this will probably take 2-3 days to code up, (less if I use Ruby) so lets plan for a world wide announcement on this comment at that point. With 40-50 million page views a day, its pretty much all you need to do to guarantee a flood of users.

    #1. That sounds horrible. If you're looking to do good dev work, time to bail immediately, and next time be sure to ask about process in your interview.

    #2. On the other hand, if you're a career climber at this company, you can make huge impacts by driving the adoption of these kinds of processes, and will quickly vault your way to the top of the engineering pile. That assumes that this way isn't the grand design of some really stupid people, or that you don't have managers that will support this. In that case, see #1.
