  1. Not quite that easy... on The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security · · Score: 1

So...tell me just how you'd send something to someone in an attachment, and all they had to do was click (or double-click) it to open it?

Thing is, on OS X, they have to at the very least take the steps of unzipping the attached app bundle to an appropriate location, or mounting the attached disk image, then finding it in the Finder and double-clicking it to run it. You can't simply attach an app, because it's a folder.

  2. Hybrids != Hydrogen fuel cell cars on Controlling Hurricanes? · · Score: 1

You're confusing hybrids with hydrogen/electric cars, methinks. Those require electricity from the grid or a hydrogen fuel cell charged elsewhere to run, and do, indeed, simply move the problem away from consumers (and largely onto the power plants, which I believe run much dirtier than your average auto these days...).

Hybrids, on the other hand, at least as I understand the science, still run on ordinary old gasoline--they just use a lot less of it, 'cause they use some fancy techniques with generators and batteries and a purely electric motor that, when looked at closely, seem awfully like last century's technology...but end up increasing the efficiency of the car a lot.

So points for effort, but no, you're wrong.

Yeah, but just because they have power does not at all necessarily mean they will use it for evil ("power corrupts" isn't an absolute, just a guideline). That seems to be the mistake many people are making--automatically assuming that the fact that they are on top of the heap means that they are evil, and must have used unethical means to get there, or intend to use unethical means to stay there.

The problem with this kind of thinking is that Google didn't use unethical means to get there--they just got there by being the best at what they do. And that's all they have to keep doing to stay there.

Google knows what happens when a company starts using their power for evil--they lose all their brownie points and people start leaving them because they don't like being treated that way. It is to their advantage to Stay Good (poing!), and they know it.

They open-sourced it, and a community built it up to what is now Aleph One.

If that were what MS were trying to do, that would be a good idea; they'd have to provide a compatibility layer to make it look like the old (current) style of FS, but I can't imagine that could be anywhere near as bad as trying to stick a DB layer on a non-DB FS.

Personally, I don't think there are many things terrible enough to be executed for, and they should all be treated on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately, the US legal system is so unbelievably screwed up that you can't let anything be taken on a case-by-case basis, you have to draw solid, inflexible lines, because otherwise, unscrupulous lawyers will twist the meanings to say whatever they want them to. (Note: I am saying that the lawyers who are unscrupulous will do this, not that all lawyers are unscrupulous.)

If you have (or get) Mac OS 10.3 or newer, it will come with Apple's X11.app, which, when you launch it, provides a fully functional installation of X. I just tried the select-to-copy and second-button-to-paste method in it, and it works perfectly, even when my "second button" is actually option+click my trackpad's button. Within a window, and between windows.

You can also install any X program that's been ported to PPC Darwin (and some that haven't!) easily from source, including all the most popular window managers, if you prefer them to the Finder. I'd recommend looking up Fink, a Debian-style package manager for OS X. I've had nothing but excellent luck with it.

  22. Works in theory on Fansubbers Under Fire · · Score: 1

Your theory of official translations being better than fan translations doesn't really hold true in practice, at least in my experience.

I know a good deal of Japanese--learned from both college and anime--and I can almost always tell when a sub isn't saying what the speakers are saying. I've seen this far more often in licensed productions than I have in fansubs. Furthermore, the licensed subtitled DVDs I've seen invariably use the blocky, boring, yellow or green "default DVD subtitle font". It looks pretty ugly. On the other hand, some fansubs I've seen are truly masterful. For instance, the new (as in, only 3-4 episodes are yet out in Japan) Aa! Megamisama! series now airing in Japan is being fansubbed by AnimeOne (I think...might have the name wrong), and they are able to put in:

    • Credits for themselves mixed in with the regular credits in exactly the same font and color
    • Karaoke notation in the form of falling feathers that fade gently away when they touch the subs, as well as other words that appear and fade out beautifully for the backup singers
    • Subtitles for on-screen text that is in the same color and style as the on-screen text, and so well positioned and moved about that it looks like it belongs there
    • And more that just shows the amount of care the people put into these
It's always very clear from the quality of the translation, the culture notes, and the subs that fansubbers are doing this for the love of it, and the "professional" subbers are just doing their job, and trying to save as much money for their company as possible.

Try watching some of the "amateur" subs before you lambast them next time. You might be surprised.

Though I certainly agree that the parent was making an outrageous comparison (and generally being a troll), at the most basic level, the AC has a point. Those who fansub--and, to a lesser degree, those who download fansubs--know that the law says that you're not allowed to do that. They disagree with the law--after all, who the heck is it hurting?--so they disregard it. Though the type of law is clearly very different, and far less oppressive, a case can certainly be made that there's some civil disobedience going on here.

The big difference I see, and the part that gets really contentious, is that in this case it all boils down to money. The big companies want to be able to make more money, we don't think we should have to spend as much money. This makes the issue seem much more petty.

But if the big companies get their way, and no one challenges them, then we may end up with something far worse than high prices for DVDs.

In short, I think we are brewing the perfect economic storm. The Republicans are proposing gimmicks and tax cuts, and saying that deficits don't matter. The Democrats are saying there is no problem and are proposing increases in health care benefits. We are all doomed.

Personally, as a liberal Democrat, I'm pretty disgusted with both sides right now, in large part because NOBODY has the guts to say what the obvious answer to looming debt/deficit problems is: raise taxes.

At some point (not sure when, though I'm sure someone can come up with a date), it became political suicide to even suggest raising taxes. Thus, we get tax cut after tax cut, and the government still has to spend a similar amount, and the inevitable happens.

Even as a strong liberal, I'd be very happy to see a true fiscal conservative in power for a while. It's clearly what we need right now, as unpopular as his solutions might be.
