    That's not the "fat" part about the fat binaries. Fat binaries are for several architectures in one file.
    You build and link your binary like normal, then use lipo to merge them.
    Darwin 7 is build completely fat, with even the kernel being a fat binary.

    Actually, the patent is not for the DOS-style fat, but for the vfat extensions, namely the way long file names are stored.
    Also, because FAT32 is not suited for media under 128 MB, the patent is relevant to general computing these days, for 32 and 64 MB memory sticks and suchlike.

    Er, they did. There's even a C-like programming language, in case you don't want to write raw assembler for these processors. The whole process of uploading stuff on the graphics card is halfway standarized, at least in OpenGL; I don't use DX, but according to documentation you can use the same shaders with similar commands.

    Documentation of the OpenGL side is in the OpenGL Extension Registry, look for "shader" and "program".

    Nope, the GPL says "offer [...] to give any third party [...] a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code". That could for example be a little slip of paper, saying "You can download the Linux kernel source at $company_url".
    There's normally already lots of little slips inside a generic DVD player package, saying things like "If you can read this, your warranty is void" and other stuff, so one more shouldn't bring the cost up by too much.

    Administrator may not have SYSTEM level access, but he has the privilege to promote himself to it. Process Explorer, for example, promotes itself to system level access, and can subsequently kill everything. Try killing LSASS.EXE, it's fun.

    Well, buying a system from the "Gesellschaft fur Software- und System-Entwicklung" is certainly better for the German economy than sending money to Redmond, thankyouverymuch.
    Plus, all our CS students are trained on Linux, so there are plenty of Linux-savvy folks around here. Who will get paid for _developing_ stuff (on the Linux platform), instead of making money by holding companies hostage.

    What a wonderful idea. So Apple should just do what?
    Link their system programs against different versions of the libraries?
    Or just statically link all their stuff?
    Or not use libraries at all?
    Fact is, if you have an API for which there are no header files, which isn't documented, and which is used only in special cases in system applications, then don't complain if it changes. Your program _will_ be a terrible hack, and nothing's going to change that.

    The parent just clarifies that Maya is indeed completely useless for the purposes given in the blurb, namely to create content for your own non-commercial applications.
    Instead, what we see here is the PLE, which is old news.
    For someone who read the /. blurb, thought, "oh, Maya is now a free download for non commercial applications. Thanks a lot, Alias. Now I can record the video for my next game. :)" (yeah, some people think in smilies), this is useless.

    Apple Germany is the worst !"$%&/()="#?^\ of "$%&/ I've ever seen. You'll probably have noticed how everything from Apple is up to 150% the price of the US; there are _no_ Apple stores; the Apple service point in my city is a cellar hole, smelling of motor oil, and the people who work there have no interest in helping at all; although every few years Apple starts another try to actually sell systems, these pathetic tries end up with some big retail chain (not) selling misconfigured several-year old iBooks...
    Shortly, Apple Germany really sucks.

    But X window and native and (relatively) fast PDF support are already available for Jaguar. XCode is definitely available for Jaguar, too, although probably not for non-developers. So, the features you are asking for are there.
    Plus, it was widely known that Panther would come, and probable that there would be no cheap updates for folks who bought Jaguar prior to the release announcement (because it was like that with the last updates, too).

    You mean Morpheus. They were based on the FastTrack network and then changed to Gnutella. Using Gnucleus, IIRC.
    Kazaa OTOH still use the FastTrack network. This network runs over centralized servers, so a third party client could indeed be "stealing" their resources.

    Where do you think the words "the, word, is, in, than, had, a" come from? Perhaps from "das, wort, ist, in, denn, hat, ein"? I'd say seven of the words you used are quite a lot.
    Note that I didn't include just similar sounding words (School-Schule, modern-modern, nurse-Nurse,population-Population); the former are of german origin, while the latter both german and english inherited from the "roman invaders" :-).

    Seriously, though, what are you to do with Japanese? Use the Japanese word in ASCII? Use the English word? Somewhere, you'll need standarisation, and you'll have to look close, because perhaps your standards entity will just pull a stunt like this...

    Personally, I almost always buy at cheap CD stores (2001 comes to mind), where they have CDs so cheap that the costs for copy protection would cut the publishers profits too much. Noone protects CDs for less than 10 Euros.
    I wouldn't guess that most people can find a way around the copy protection, although several of those "protections" simply don't work. According to European law, it is legal to rip your protected CD if the protection is not functional. So you just try your neighbours burner :-)

    A PC with an X through it doesn't really help to show that the CD doesn't play in your car. If that isn't enough, most DVD players don't play these, either. This policy is starting to really piss consumers off. As far as I know, most retailers around here (Germany, that is) just take all the CDs back, if you give them "it doesn't play on my DVD/car stereo/discman" as the reason.

    43 watts @ 1.8 GHz means something like 50 watts @ 2 GHz. Now look at the blurb, exactly the place where it talks about "dual". This means there's two of them. 2*50 watts=100 watts.

    Of course, it's a rather stupid idea to compare this with the Prescott's 103 watts: with the G5 we have two points to cool. Might as well put the Prescott's and G5's graphics card in, which surely produces quite a bit of heat itself.

    Yep, and if you are able to read the article you'll see that they are actually arguing that that is impossible.

    i.e. because the law only gives your client the right to a single safety copy, you can not under any circumstances allow them to do more. Needless to say, this argumentation is so absurd that it's almost an insult to try to get away with this.

    I installed OS X 10.2 three weeks ago, connected to System Update, and found _three_ updates. One "Combo Update 10.2.6", and two Security Updates. I had to reboot once after that.
    Given my experiences with Windows Update, for 47 updates you'd have to reboot about 50 times.

    there was this jumper on my CD drives. "Tray lock" or something like that. Basically, you could set it, and then the OS could no longer lock your CD tray. Good thing, if you ask me. Even before that, my first CD drive had a fully mechanical tray, which you had to open yourself. No locking there :-)

    Why not run the newer Mac version (Glider PRO) in Basilisk?
    Glider 4.0 is only black-and-white, while the non-carbonized version of Glider Pro even looks much better than the OS X version. Someone bleached out the interior rooms in that one. Ugly.

    Never had the nerve to actually finish implementing the actual game, what with those 144 types of objects and all.
