Most mature review of Vista ever written in Slashdot:) What I really like about Vista reviews on/. is the constant mentioning and ridicule of "allow/cancel" while "forgetting" that this "feature" is inside every Unix machine ever made.
I don't think you car and electricity examples are appropriate. A programmer can specialize and have knowledge in a certain field but a good programmer is supposed to be able to adapt and be able to solve whatever problem is presented to him. Of course, it requires learning new material but he should already have the different skills necessary to accomplish that. Anyway, it should be much easier for a kernel programmer to learn userspace driver programming than for userspace application programmer to learn kernel programming.
So I guess you never use banking websites and have never bought anything online, no? And what's the point of being an AC? It's going to be a piece of cake to crack slashdot and get your details?
Thunderbird's and Gmail's filters seem to do almost all the filtering perfectly these days, but even checking the size of my inbox against my junk-boxes, I have to say that In the last few weeks I've been getting certain Viagra spam that keeps slipping through thunderbird's filter no matter the time I marked it as junk...
1. No Multiplayer. I realize the plot doesn't allow for it, but give us some death match.
I just can't understand those complaining about no multiplayer. It's like complaining about why WOW doesn't have a single player mode. It's a single player game, period. Would you be asking why solitaire doesn't have a multiplayer mode?
Anyway, reading the rest of your complaints it's obvious that you are more of an online shooter guy than someone who cares for a plot or atmosphere. I am the opposite. Unfortunately most games that come out are better suited to your taste so I am definitely happy with Bioshock.

A few months ago somebody other than me ordered a few dells from dell.com....they accidentally ordered office 2007 instead of 2003 (which is the standard in our company). The 2007 is absolutely TERRIBLE! I stopped reading right there.
Anyone who thinks the new interface is not vastly superior to the old one has no idea what he is talking about. When MS finally innovates, you people find some way to turn it against them.
Ok, I lied, I kept reading a little bit more. You reason that the new UI is bad because it's different than the old UI. So, should we just stick with the old drop down menu system until the end of time just so you wouldn't need to learn a new and improved one? What do you say to people who consider Linux but don't want to switch because it's different than Windows?
He states that because of the protection annoyance he will not buy the game but pirate it instead. How is this different than someone pirating a game because it costs money? The mere fact that any clown feels that he has the right to decide if he will buy or pirate a game is ridiculous.
- By saying that you would have pirated the game instead of buying it you are actually making the publishers point that a copy protection is necessary more valid.
- The only limitation this enforces on you is to uninstall the game first before reinstalling.
- 99% of the people who need to install the game in more than 2 machines are basically pirating it.
Well no one is forcing you to buy DRM'ed products but everyone likes to complain about them because in reality we are actually interested in the product but are simply turned off by the DRM. It ends up sucking for all of us but a big part of the complainers are those who led to the DRM solution in the first place.
Why is this game so popular? In which ways did it revolutionize the genre?
I never had a Xbox and didn't batter to get the PC edition. From what I understand, this is a fairly typical FPS just very very polished one. Much like Blizzard games which are not really revolutionary but are simply well done with a lot of attention to detail.
If they will give out sdk's as easy as they state then its not so bad. I am sure it will be easy if you'll agree to the TOS which will be probably require you to implement the protocol including all it's features like say... DRM?
I've never heard of an MMORPG that was cracked to that you could play for free (on an official server) or even play without purchasing the client software.
My idea of a cracked DRM is one that allows you to use the product exactly is if the DRM was not included. I think starforce which is used for gaming was never fully cracked. At least not the latest version. I remember seeing a crack for a game (I forgot its name, go figure) which used starforce that required you to physically unplug your dvd drive from the motherboard in order to work... Starforce was such a violent protection that even the game companies themselves decided to ditch it. It would do havoc to your machine and I even heard several cases were a DVD drive was rendered useless because of it.
As someone has already mentioned, no DRM is uncrackable but some of them require a lot of work. The DRM's of popular products will always be cracked because of the demand but there are many people who use niche products that are usually not worth the effort for the skilled crackers. These will just have to take the pill and suffer quietly.
I think your view on sex is too conservative. It's just sex. If you make a big deal out of it, it becomes a big deal. The taboo culture around sex is what's making you think that this girl is a slut. Try and think what really is wrong with what she did. It wasn't that she had sex with another guy, it was the fact that she betrayed the trust of someone who cared about her.
Once you've had sex you understand that it is not much different than any other joyful activity. Of course you can accidentally get someone pregnant or catch a disease but you can also easily get yourself in a car accident while driving or just get run over by a bus as a pedestrian. If you do stuff recklessly, you will pay for it. The conservative view of "I am saving myself" is bullshit because once you've done it and gotten used to it you'll understand that you just missed on whole lot of fun for a pretty long time.
I can never understand how the public gets so outraged if a breast is actually shown during prime time TV but could care less about people shooting each other or driving recklessly. People think "it will give a bad example to our children". So freaking what? I prefer that my kids think they are cool for having lots of sex than for driving 100mph in a suburban area or knowing how to shoot a gun.
I am really trying to like NB but the fact that on a windows box it take 8 seconds to open the file dialog makes me crazy.

Is this botnet the one that keep sending the "Viagra Official Site" spam?
PC games get pirated. Not sold. It's not even funny anymore.

According to TFA the archives from 1987-Present and 1851-1922 (public domain) are going to be free.
While A Song of Ice and Fire is an amazing series, the books left to write / age of writer ratio is not very promising.

Very interesting read, thanks. I guess this is what zonk is hoping for when he posts all those gaming stories that most /.ers hate.
He states that because of the protection annoyance he will not buy the game but pirate it instead. How is this different than someone pirating a game because it costs money? The mere fact that any clown feels that he has the right to decide if he will buy or pirate a game is ridiculous.
Was my statement inaccurate?
We can cry all we want about the copy protection but the truth is that it actually worked and no pirated PC version of the game has been released yet.
- It is not a rootkit.
- By saying that you would have pirated the game instead of buying it you are actually making the publishers point that a copy protection is necessary more valid.
- The only limitation this enforces on you is to uninstall the game first before reinstalling.

As ad blocking spreads, web sites will find more intrusive ways to serve ads. This will become much like DRM.

Following the tradition of free software products its name will probably be something like "Kabuke" "Gposho".
