  4. Microsoft Singularity on New Developments From Microsoft Research · · Score: 2, Interesting
This is the most interesting project IMO, but will probably never see the light of day. From the Wikipedia article

Singularity is a Microsoft Research project started in 2003 to build a highly-dependable operating system in which the kernel, device driver, and applications are all written in managed code. The lowest-level x86 interrupt dispatch code is written in assembly language and C. Once this code has done its job, it calls the kernel, whose runtime and garbage collector are written in C# and run in unsafe mode. The hardware abstraction layer is written in C++ and runs in safe mode. There is also some C code to handle debugging. The computer's BIOS is only called during the 16-bit real-mode bootstrap stage; once in 32-bit mode, Singularity never calls the BIOS again, but rather calls device drivers written in C#. During installation, CIL opcodes of the C# kernel are compiled into x86 opcodes using the Bartok research project. Bartok is an optimizing compiler written in C# for translating CIL into x86.

As I presume that you are aware that someone has to pay for all the content that is being consumed, what other business model would you offer ?

"Using nice ads" is not an answer. When everyone will have learned that they can block all ads, that is the end. No one will remove ad blocking just to check if the ads got nicer.
all the excuses that I hear are the sort of "They started it !" Which as truth as it may be , won't solve the problem. With no ads there will be no content. Which brings me back to the question above. Does anyone have a solution ?

Wikipedia is self moderating. The end users restore defaced pages. There was even an article in Wired a couple of months ago about it. On average, defacements are cleaned within a few minutes by other users, and the repairs are so fast that vandals quickly get discouraged.

That only applies to "stupid vadalism" as in something like changing the George Bush article to read only "Bush is the smartest person alive". This kind of vandalism is very easy to notice and is the reason why it gets reverted so fast. The smart vandalist will make small changes in specific parts of the article. Changes that might not be so clear on a brief reading, like changing the birth place of a person or a adding a small fictionalized event to an article about a lesser known subject (History of Togo for example).
Some might not regard this as vandalism per se, but it is a form of vandalism even if not a "loud" one.
Actually, I think it is worse than "loud" vandalism because here the vandalist has much better chances to succeed, and on the way adding some gas to the anti-wikipedia fire.

The cold hard facts are that if everyone will block commercials for free content, there will be no free content.
