  1. Certifications on For Those Who Wish to be Programmers? · · Score: 1

You might consider getting certified in some programming area. I know there are Java certifications from Sun and they are not too hard to get. Not only do some employers like them, it's also a great way to learn. Best of all, all you have to do is pass a test and you can study on your own so you don't have to take time away from your family.

  2. A bit biased on Statistics of Deadly Quarrels · · Score: 3, Insightful

I didn't like the fact that the thing has no indication of time. What about the fact that the US has been around for little over 200 years while other countries (especially the European ones with lots of lines) have been around for much more than that. Maybe they should limit this thing by time or something.

  3. Ogg is not finalized on The Future of Ogg Vorbis · · Score: 1

If one goes to the Ogg Vorbis page would show that the latest they have is RC3. Close, but no cigar. Maybe we should wait on yelling at xiph about not having a clearly defined standard before they finish writing it? In my opinion, that is why it has not yet been implemented in portably audio players.
Personally, I long ago have been using OGG and its a great format. Love the quality.

  5. More Music Fans!! on The Culture of CD Burning · · Score: 1

The music industry might REALLY REALLY win on people copying CDs. You have people listening to a lot more music than they would if they ahd to pay for it. Subsequently. you have a generation of people who enjoy music and have a fairly wide range of interest. When these people grow up and will have money, they will buy more. I know when I was in HS I got a whole bunch of tapes made for me by friends. All of the albums that were on those tapes that were worthy, I got on CD once I got some money in my pocket. Wait until the college kids move out of dorms and get real jobs.

  6. Re:Hmmm.... on The Culture of CD Burning · · Score: 1

I have to agree.. Besides, most of us already share hws and stuff. Cheating at school has been going on for a lot longer than copying music. Of course usually, when you cheat, you make sure the other person is ok with it. How that relates to music? It doesn't. If you stop making 1-hit wonder CDs that people only buy for one song (these are the most susceptible to people getting the MP3 and not the CD), then maybe people will start buying CDs again.

  7. That's Great, But... on Lycoris - Linux for the Masses? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I installed Lycoris on an extra machine I had without a problem... until it turned out it didn't have drivers for my sound card. (Not a rare one either- ECS K7S5A motherboard onboard sound) Now what? Needs a kernel recompile which I don't have time to learn how to do and which most users wouldn't be able to learn even if they tried. If this were windows, however, I'd be able to just download the driver and point-and-click install it. As far as I know, Linux doesn't have anything like that. Until it does, it will be out of reach of the massess.

  8. Re:Cool, but.... on Google to Offer API · · Score: 1

If google returns paid links as well as non-paid ones, they would have to indicate it in the search results. Then, the program pulling in the search results could simply filter those out. Chances are, google would be able to make a legal clause for the use of the API but it would still be pretty damn hard to track. The other choice would be not to indicate which listings are paid and which aren't- but this would really confuse the people using the search results and wouldn't be too great at all.

  9. No Choice! on College Students Are Buying More, Warez-ing Less · · Score: 1

There's less piracy because many schools force the students to buy the software! At my school, polytechnic university, www.poly.edu, they made all the people that come in lease laptops from the school, on which they included all the software like Office and Visual Studio and a whole plethora of programs people usually warez because they are only used for a term (MatLab, DesignCAD - yes maybe some of you use these day-to-day, but for most poeple I know these are used only for a term or two). So as part of the lease, the students pay for this stuff! Lucky they started the program after I came into the school I guess. It's probably similar in many other schools- hence the reduction in piracy.

But I think dead languages are a little too much- C++, Java (it's popular, yes, but its also quite good for OOP courses), and C would make great languages to learn all the concepts in and they each come with a mountain of internet-available resources to look at(not copy code from, but as an addition to school related resources like textbook and class ntoes).

One of the advantages of digital over analog is that between the 1 and the 0 you have a ton of space that you can consider an error so if your signal is distorted (long wires), you still know what's going on- and you know when you have an error in transmission. In fact, when you read a binary signal, you can have true, false, and no output. With 3 possible inputs, the neutral zones between accepted values would become smaller and would significantly increase chances of error. In fact, the higher the base you take, the less margin of error.

  20. These things cost too much on Another Internet Appliance Dies · · Score: 2, Informative

$599? Are you kidding? The whole point of making something that's less than a computer is that it costs less. You can get computers for $599 that can do just about anything. Look at the audrey- didn't sell when it was $499, but now for $89 they're selling well (got mine!) and there're communities around hacking it and generally enhancing it. Of course the $89 doesn't cover what 3Com paid to make it, but $499 was still overpriced. On second hand... Maybe they should take a hint from the hacking communities around the I-Opener and the Audrey and have an open source internet appliance- they can sell it cheaply because all it'd cost is the hardware.

  21. sucks domans on How Many Domains Does Your School Own? · · Score: 1

I have the polytechnicsucks.com domain name and I've had it for a year. For the uninformed, polytechnic University is a school in NY. Check out www.poly.edu (it might be down because of the WTC disaster). I have had the domain for a while but might soon put stuff up on it. I am basically thinking about putting criticism (and perhaps praise) of the school on there. What are my rights, considering I am a student of it right now and have been since before I registered the domain? Can poly silence me? Anyone else in a similar situation and can share experience?
