This is exactly the reason apple wants to stop rumor sites, and is known as the Osborne Effect. This paper should be required reading for folks who think that rumor sites do no harm.
It has nothing to do with "diminishing the surprise of steves keynote".
I ALWAYS tell my friends to "Wait till macworld" to buy macs. (if its close to macworld). However this attitude CLEARLY hurts apple. Apple is trying to stop the osborne effect.
Apache Web Server -- Xserve can support 60 percent more connections on an Apache Web Server than an IBM eServer x330. Under industry standard WebBench performance benchmarks, an Xserve running Apache on Mac OS X Server can support 4,051 web connections per second compared to 2,547 connections per second on an IBM eServer x330 running Apache on Linux. Xserve provides an affordable and robust server platform for even the most industrial strength web applications.
The question was: how do you make the process of scanning thousands of pictures in easier? Editor, printing is not a big deal. The original question is far more interesting - I don't really feel like individually placing 2500 photos on my flatbed scanner. Is there a hardware device to quickly scan photos?
The OS X version os BLAST (a bioinformatics package - what they are doing) is apparently many times faster than any PC version, due to its altivec/vector optimization.
You don't need internet access on the road. A digital camera might be nice, but once you get "out there" you realize that life goes on without 'net access.
It's almost liberating being "disconnected" for a while! (this is coming from a true geek)
I believe the XDarwin/XFree86 team is working hard on making it faster. I suspect you won't see a dent in the speed of XFree86 on OSX until 10.2, though. It is definitely not your fault - the problem is XDarwin, and the way it is designed. It simply needs to operate at a lower level than it does currently.
OS X is a very young OS, remember - just over a year old.
Whatever happened to the US's "one china" policy? This article would surely piss off the govt of china, who claim that Taiwan is part of China.
I believe the official US line is still "one china".
I would guess there are now more working games for Linux than for Mac OS.
I would guess that, too, since Loki released about 20 games, KDE includes a nice collection, as does GNOME. And wine supported a few.
He is talking about Windows games on WINE, in which case he might be correct. But Mac OS (X) can now of course run KDE/Gnome/etc games, and i belive all of the games Loki ported were on the mac before they were on linux. The mac has a lot of games. We get most of the good ones, while the crap doesn't get ported.
Anyway, Mac gaming is currently exploding - even IGN (finally) just started up a new mac channel.
> there aren't enough facts yet
Yes, there are.
Do more research. In science literature, not republican websites. Don't blindly parrot what your GOP tells you.
It is trivial to make a container that'll survive reentry, OR a shuttle accident. In fact, RTGs HAVE survived launch accidents, been recovered from the ocean, and been RE-USED.

Are you sure you were using the Apple/Genentech optimized BLAST? (from apple's site?) It sounds like you were not.
From maccentral:
Thoom!
I think we need to "fix" some of these record execs...

What exactly is bullshit in his statement? You are agreeing with him. (and how did he troll, exactly?)
Not "Pheonix". :)
(this browser OmniWeb spell checks as I type. Very nice)
(unfortunately in karelia's case, apple didn't buy them but instead remade their product)
Other shareware products/technologies apple bought: WindowShade, Internet Config.

Anyone care to translate this sentence, from the post:
"They might even be making a come back after its very rough time as a part of SGI."
They.. its?
All well and good, except for the fact that KDE *hasn't* been ported to Darwin. :)
Currently, the Fink port only builds on Mac OS X. The darwin build is being worked on, and should come fairly soon.

Hmm what do you mean, wrap up their port? GNOME has been on Mac OS X for a long time.
Gnome-2.0 is not yet on OSX, but a glib and gtk+ are in fink.

If you actually read the article. :) You will learn that contrary to the /. header, the tech was a "she".

Wow, connection refused this time. Here is a working link to the Reuters story.
Um. You must be trolling. The internet has no "rules".

The article is crap. He doesn't even mention the best features of 10.2. (like quartz extreme)

Facts. Don't let them get in your way..
There is no lumber cartel. Move along.
New version for everyone, as well as OS X version coming soon!
Isn't shake like $20000 software? The hardware is not exactly the pricey part here. :)
