Why would an internet cafe have cd-burners at all? How many people actually go to these places to download an iso of linux or use the burner for any other legal reasons? The internet cafe owners obviously knew what they would be used for, and deserve whatever fines they got.
Yes, I use aei's 1.2mb plan. They also have a very reasonable 20 gig down/ 20 gig up monthly limit, compared to the insane 6 gig down/up monthly limit with some other providers.
The US government thinks the "war on terror" is more important than the space program. It's too bad the only country with the technological power to stop worldwide destruction is bent on causing it.
yeah. whoevever wrote this virus should be locked up for the rest of his life. I'm sure the big, lonely 6'7 black guy named bubba who will be his cell mate will make him regret writing this horrible virus
I wouldn't say amd chips are more reliable, they generally run hotter than comparable intel chips, and amd only recently introduced thermal protection. Don't get me wrong, I like amd chips, I have an xp 1800 in this pc, but I wouldn't say they are more reliable. You have to be very careful when you install one.
An additional plus is if this takes off, we can add ANOTHER arena of fair use that uses the "evil" blank CD that the RIAA wants to continue to tax and regulate. The more legit uses we can find for blank CDs, the stronger the argument for banishing the CD tax, and tossing out any notion of regulating recordable media.
Actually, VCD's can be seen as another EVIL use of blank cd-r media. Trading of movies or episodes of tv shows in the vcd format is very common on p2p networks/irc/ftp. Mainly because they can be played in most dvd players, and most people have cd-burners, but not dvd burners.
How many 9 or 10 year olds know how to use shell commands? Ok, there are a few smart ones out there, but I think a 'construction set' game, for kids, would be better with an interface. You can ween the kids off gui's later.
many people record shows and skip the commercials, having pop up ads would effectively force you to watch ads no matter what, as long as it was a part of the broadcast signal.
well Gene kan wrote software that was very important to alot of slashdot users, wether he died by his own hand or not slashdot is not being a proper 'geek' news source by not mentioning what happened to an important figure.
1) He has removed anti page widening code, so slashdot looks messed up in IE again. Good job screwing over most of your users (everyone knows most people who visit slashdot use IE, windows or mac versions)
2) The karma system no longer uses numerical values... this means you don't know wether you are getting karma added or taken away besides a vague discription. Basically it means editors can abuse users they don't like easier.
Thanks Jamie, you hit two birds with one stone today, making the site look unprofessional on the most used browser in the world, and making it easier to abuse your users...
Unfortunately it won't change untill the day someone claims slashdot dos attacked them when it was just a large amount of users hitting a site at once.
I have already seen sites being shut down because they were slashdotted and used up all their allocated bandwidth, with only a 'sorry to shut down this site but we were slashdotted' message left. It's an interesting dilemma.
As a canadian I am happy to see America finally taking some mine-clearing initiative seeing as most land-mines were planted by them. It's good to know they are working on clearing technology so less innocent civilians will have to lose their lives.
spiderman is part of the marvel comic universe while batman is part of the dc comic universe. What kind of crazy story are they going to use to merge the 2 comic book realities? I hope it has nothing to do with star trek.
Most technology appreciating people should realize Hollywood is an evil empire after the whole Decss incident. Hyping a Hollywood money milking series such as 'the matrix' is pretty hypocritical on a site such as slashdot that claims to be a part of the fight for free speach. I myself vow not to watch any Hollywood movie, including any Matrix ones, until the movie industry becomes less corrupt and hell bent on crushing peoples rights.
Don't buy into the hype, instead donate the ticket money to the EFF.
So basically they are saying that every video playback software on computers would have to support this? Would this kill open-source video playback software?
On the other hand, like most copy protection measures, it will surely be cracked within a day or two.
unfortunatly this is a 10mbit ETHERNET connection, and not a 10mbit INTERNET connection. Too bad though, I wouldn't mind making some money on the side running an isp from my house.

nobody has converted quake into some sort of modelling program yet?
their products will never be secure as long as they do not detect the fbi's spy software.

Interesting how slashdot posts this when they didn't post the story of Gene Kan, one of the original gnutella coders, being found dead.
I guesse the priorities are getting new software and not paying respect to coder who's contributions help us fight the good fight.
get jeskola buzz. It's the best free music program for pc's, and you can even write your own effects and synthsizers for it if you wish.
