well when I was 15-16 I repaired people's pc's for (what was) alot of money for me. But I did not know how to code or anything. However a friend of mine began coding basic at age 8. Now at 22 he is one hell of a php coder
I'd recommend anyone who is offended by the tactics of cable companies to simply quit subscribing to cable at all.
When we watch tv we are wasting time when we could be doing something productive, and if you want good entertainment you can always rent a movie. Tv is full of ads, many of which are from the large, rich, dmca loving companies that we all dispise. Why would anyone want to PAY to watch disney, or NBC, or warner? By doing that we are simply funding the companies that are destroying all our freedom. Tv is also controlled by americans, and I've seen my local canadian television go downhill when faced against the behemoth of american corporate television. Kids are being brainwashed and having their brains rot from imported japanese tv such as pokemon, which are basically hallucinogenic sessions.
I say pull the cable plug out for good, we no longer need to be mindless zombies of the media.
More than once Slashdot has published stories from questionable sources which turned out to be completely false. Although it's inevitable for any site that uses reader submitions to sometimes publish hoax stories as it's hard to read every submition that is sent. However I've read many stories in newspapers here (not in china) that came from sources about as or less credible than the onion. China is relatively new to the internet so I suppose they haven't figured out which sites are the joke ones yet.
I guesse we could say: Beijing Newspaper. YHBT. YHL. HAND.
From my experience, most of the people who shop for pc's at retail stores such as walmart are not very experienced with how they work. Generally the more experienced users either build their own system from scratch or get one custom made for them. Most people I know who buy pre-assembled pc's have no clue how to install WINDOWS, let alone linux. And most linux users know enough about pc's that they would not buy a pre assembled one from wal-mart.
I am not certain who they intend to market these pc's to, as the type of people who buy them generally would want windows anyway. There is no point in forcing these people to go through the windows install, no matter how easy it is. And I doubt they would make much business with linux users, as most would not buy a system from a retail store.
it's not forced on anyone it's just become standard, if something better comes out and people know about it they will switch (better also means easy to use)
It mentioned in the article that each terminal cost 500$. 500$ for a dumb terminal? Thats pretty expensive, one could buy an entire pc for that price... but then again its sun hardware.
Maybe some people have not noticed, but very few linux companies are successful. Perhaps by actually 'selling' software (as in not giving it away for free on the net), it's possible united linux may even be profitable.
Look at windows, it is expensive, it cost ALOT of money to develope for, and it is used in 90% of all desktop pcs. Is there something wrong with this system? United linux can offer a solution to windows that is cheaper and more functional, and by not giving it away for free they can also stay in business.
Besides, United linux is targeted at business users... They have money, they can afford licenses. Why is it that when a large company promotes linux in a way that is profitable people complain? They are helping create a larger linux user base! Don't mess it up!
In the perfect world, everything would be free... But nowadays, especially in the tech world were many companies are dead or dying, you sometimes have to accept that giving away everything for free might not be the right format for success.
Why do people need to use so many wireless devices at home? Weren't these designed to be used when you are AWAY from home? I personally don't use my wireless devices when I don't need to.
Maybe if people started cutting down on things they don't need there would be less congestion!
As a student I have noticed a disturbing trend among my peers. I would say that at least 75% of them have cell phones. I often notice in class that many people are playing 'snake' and other cell phone games in class instead of paying attention. Although we would find it odd if someone brought a gameboy to class and began playing it while the teacher was explaining something, nobody seems to mind if someone is playing 'snake' on their cell phone. Personally I find these games to be academically destructive.
With the latest advances in cell phones, where they are quickly reaching PDA level, I believe it is time to ban their use in schools. Games like snake cause extreme academic decline. Cell phones are often used to cheat in class. Everyone forgets to turn them off (and games like snake ENCOURAGE people to leave them on!). Most institutions have sufficiant amounts of pay phones that people do not need cell phones. It baffles me why they are allowed in schools in the first place. Silly games like snake are just another reason why they should not be allowed.
I'd have to agree with you on buzz, I use it often in fact, I should have included it in my argument. However although buzz is a great and powerful program it isn't the type of program that would be used in a studio (mainly since it's midi support is quirky and it's interface is tracker style as opposed to sequencer style)
There are a couple of points I'd like to clear up since I am a musician. Music software needs to be easy to use. Musicians don't like to spend weeks learning an OS when they could be spending that time writing music. Musicians like me also won't switch from tried and true platforms unless something BETTER comes out. Not equal but BETTER. I use logic audio in winXP and that works very well for me. If something equivalent came out for linux I wouldn't use it since I wouldn't get anywhere learning new software that did the same thing as the software I use. It would be difficult to code a software studio program that was comparable to ones used today on the windows and macintosh platforms. These are serious, large programs that take the combined effort of a group of hired programmers to create. They have good interfaces and are standard. Many open-source programs that I have seen lack in the interface area and in the standards area. There is a reason why programs like cubase or logic audio cost so much, creating them is a huge endeavor and creating a realiable environment and good interface is not an easy task at all.
I could see linux based distributions being used by linux users and hobbyist musicians, but I doubt that intermediate musicians would use it and pro ones would deffinately not use it (they are too attached to their MACS and protools!)
I believe music software is an area where we NEED large well-funded companies to create the software.
With warcraft3 comming out in a couple of weeks, I won't be ditching windows for a while.
The audio production I do also makes me stick with windows, as well as IE.

when I was 15 all I did was play video games and get drunk in parks. I guesse some people are just more productive at a young age :(
Would this type of wire be easier/harder to tap into than normal fiber optic wire?
The password for the database has been found, it was as simple as 'ladepujd', the name of the database's creator spelt backwards
thats not a very smart choice of password, using your name.
at least it wasn't 'god' or 'sex'
the first article was about cable tv, I was commenting on cable tv companies, so it's relevant.
I'd recommend anyone who is offended by the tactics of cable companies to simply quit subscribing to cable at all.

I was hoping I would be able to zoom out untill I saw the creation of the universe... but I suppose you cant have everything in life.

The book industry never thought of comming up with ways of preventing the use of the copy machine...
But why is the music industry trying to cripple the use of their product on computers?
a troll is rated by how many responses it gets, this one got more than a few.. including a relatively long one by YOU!
Trolling on slashdot might be fun, but only real men can troll ACTUAL face-to-face discussions!
I bet you never noticed them before watching 'fight club'

Ok so who's coding 256-bit linux? :)

Whoever put my shit on the Internet, I want to meet that motherfucker and beat the shit out of him...
Eminem has an intelligent answer to everything
I think everyone begs to ask the question: does it support linux?
and you can't forget the hoards of people who pirated winXP corporate edition, and never had to go through that registering crap.
