How do I empathise with people who, according to you, want the exact opposite of what I would want in their place?
I'm not sure where that came from, I don't think that was what I was saying.
Really, if a proportion claims to having unwanted sexual advances then who are you to tell them that that's absurd? If it's unwanted then it's been delivered badly, and the person making the advance has made a miscalculation. And that, in a work environment where you are stuck together, and often there is a power dynamic around your job, can be a pretty bad thing.
I tend to think that we need to act better than our base desires though, that is the only way a civilisation can progress and I really object to it being used as an excuse to be unpleasant to someone.
You're fighting against the laws of nature. Top dog alpha men get more children, and women are attracted by them because they want their genes for their sons.
You're fucking right I am. We fight against our animal nature all the time, we fight against it when we decide not to kill rivals to increase our power, we fight against it when we decide not to rape women to spread our genes. The laws of nature is a terrible place to go as defence for actions.
You're right in that all these factors are in there as influences, and probably some of the root causes. I tend to think that we need to act better than our base desires though, that is the only way a civilisation can progress and I really object to it being used as an excuse to be unpleasant to someone.
Well it depends on your definition of 'slowly', I don't mean glacial, I mean move at a pace that means you are aware of the other person's feelings, and eventually do actually ask. Most of the time you don't *have* to ask (and put that person & yourself in an awkward position) by waiting a little, because it will become obvious that they are not interested.
It also shows that you are atleast somewhat interested in the person, rather than just the vagina-holding body. If you just ask people out "whether they are awesome, pathetic or ugly" you show that you're not interested in the person, just the fact that they exist at all.
I mean - fine, probably not every day. Often enough that it's a permanent feature of existence though.
Of course you can't completely avoid errors, but you can massively help by understanding the other perspective, and acting in a suitable manner. Empathy is how you avoid being a dick, and the sort of man who throws up his hands in resignation and cites 'biology' as an excuse I can pretty much guarantee is not being empathetic or respectful.
Why is it so hard to imagine that it might be an issue to get unwanted attention from a physically larger potentially threatening person, or a person in a financial position of power over you?
That's not hard to imagine, but plenty of women do want attention from tall rich guys, and are waiting for them to make the first move. How are you going to tell the difference ?
You be respectful, move slowly and actually listen to the feedback. The attitude "oh these stupid women complaining about me offering my virile and high-quality sperm" doesn't gives me much confidence that that happens.
Despite the assumption of the "men's right's" contingent of slashdot, women are not in general trying to get offended, or damage your desperately fragile ego. It's not actually fun to do that. But when you're faced with this sort of 'offer' every day, when it's a common occurrence to be called a "frigid bitch" by a stranger because you don't want to be chatted-up on the bus, well you can imagine that your attitude to future encounters changes, can't you?
and twice as likely to be subjected to unsolicited sexual advances (6 vs 3 percent).
FFS just get over it. Men are expected to initiate relationships. It's called life. It's not a problem. If you don't like it you might as well kill yourself now.
It's not a problem *for you*. Because you're a man and don't have to deal with it every single day. And precisely what authority do you have to determine what is and isn't a problem for other people? Why is it so hard to imagine that it might be an issue to get unwanted attention from a physically larger potentially threatening person, or a person in a financial position of power over you?
I don't know where you're getting these numbers from, but if you'd said they were from lovely safe white Christians I wouldn't have been particularly surprised. Having views I disagree with over marriage doesn't equal wanting to destroy society. Plus unless people actually break the law, which the Manchester bomber hadn't, what actually do you want to do? What sort of a society do you want to live in?
It's very plain from the way you talk that you don't live in an area with many muslim people, and I would guess you probably don't know any at all. I do, and do, and I'm telling you they're just people.
It must be very reassuring to be able to push an entire culture into an 'incompatible' box, and be able to dismiss them all. It's still dickish, unhelpful, and wrong. Perhaps go meet some people rather than get your opinions from niche websites.
The attackers yesterday were shot 8 minutes after they started. How in your parallel universe would you expect a bunch of guys with knives and a van supposed to be stopped sooner? Are we to report all brown-looking people in vehicles? There are about 1 million 'muslim looking' people living in London.
There are 2.7 million muslims living in the UK, and your advocating treating them all with suspicion. They are in the same boat as the rest of us, trying to get on with their lives while a few crazies make everything worse.
Fuck you very much and you stereotyped, ill-informed crap.
Your calculations are *waaay* off. Most of those people will be US citizens, which won't require a visa. The majority of the rest I would expect will travel on the ESTA visa-waiver programme, which doesn't require a visa.
Not to say that it isn't a terrible idea, but your calculations don't really add to the debate.
You make a claim without proof. Your claim is based on your fear of what may be, not what has happened. And, in case it matters I did not vote for Trump. Opposition to Trump doesn't mean I have to swallow BS.
If you're not a supporter of him then you're doing a good impression of one. Be honest now, is there any proof that you would accept? What would the source have to be?
There is a lot of sources for Trump receiving gift that he shouldn't have got, but none that you want to hear, presumably because it's from the many sources you consider so biased that they would manufacture everything.
At some point the Trump apologists are going to have to stop deflecting to Clinton. Your guy is in office now, he's the one that you have to defend. Clinton lost the election, therefore isn't worthy of your time. What should be worthy is the constant stream of fuckups and potentially treason coming out of the current administration. You're not in a campaign anymore, you're in government.
1) Who watches TV shows on their *phone*??? Honestly, I can't even imagine.
Plenty really - in London I spend atleast 90 minutes per day on public transport. Doing some TV watching is a very good way of distracting from the unpleasantness of the experience...
The country demanding such is well document and publicised. If I don't wish to suffer these trials and tribulations, nothing is requiring me to go to that country. That is a far cry from soldiers breaking into my home and killing me for my religion.
I hear this apologist argument often, and it's bullshit. You know that families regularly span countries now? Or must we give up blood connections because of stupid laws? It's a normal part of life, especially in Europe, and we shouldn't excuse it just because it's possible to artificially limit yourself to avoid it.
Pretty sure you're joking here, but since commenters are already taking you seriously I will just add that you can't put any job figures, good or bad, down to this administration yet. They have currently achieved nothing, no legislation, no budget, nothiiing. Any changes now are leftover from whatever was already happening.
If women are not being promoted, for various reasons, how can they have the same experience and qualifications as the men? Either in the same job, or a higher position they are seeking?
You really believe that promotions come purely as a result of experience and capability? You haven't had my bosses. Part of the problem is that discrimination manifests itself in being passed over for promotion in favour of someone who looks and has the background as what the higher-ups expect.
You poor delicate ears can't possibly be assaulted by an opinion not your own. You sweet careful worldview must be maintained by silencing any worlds that might challenge your position in it.
I don't necessarily agree with the entirety of these findings, but seems likely there is *something* going on here. Atleast, it's faaaaar more convincing than the predictable Slashdot wailfest that happens whenever a new study comes out.
Used to be you could pretty much trust Europeans not to come to America to blow things up or murder people. Now they've taken in so many terrists and their supporters, that's no longer the case... I'm quite amazed that Britain is still in the Visa Waiver Program, because it looks more like a third-world country every time I go there.
Bullshit have you been to Britain. Or if you have: do you want to be more specific with your bile? Rather than just slandering an entire country, and continent?
Seems highly unlikely you know anything about Europe.
I think one of the problems is there kindof isn't a target customer. Who is supposed to want this? It's been tried so many times and the core problem is always there, that nobody has a screen and keyboard mouse hanging around not connected to a computer... If it were a laptop dock then maybe we're talking, a light device I could take with me / have around the sofa that would take the phone as its core and provide a big screen and keyboard. But who uses a desktop now? It's already a niche setup.
How do I empathise with people who, according to you, want the exact opposite of what I would want in their place?
I'm not sure where that came from, I don't think that was what I was saying.

That requires making a move. And if you're too slow, or too nice, they'll run off with the other guy.
So..? For some people, not being a creep outweighs manipulating into bed every woman you have a vague chance with.
Why is it so hard to imagine that it might be an issue to get unwanted attention from a physically larger potentially threatening person, or a person in a financial position of power over you?

Bull-fucking-shit.

How about you make android as a whole work better on low end devices instead of creating yet another version to support? What a strange concept.
What a great idea. Pretty sure that's what it is, it's configurations options within the main Android project.
"Android Go is a part of Android O and that it’ll be a part of every major Android release going forward."

The ChromeBook is not even close to being as locked down as a games console.
For now.
Once it actually starts to gain traction (marketshare) they'll lock it down tighter than a duck's ass.
Oh piss off. They *have* gained traction, and they've been about for years. And there hasn't been any locking down
It didn't work very well when I enables it in testing a few months ago, but we'll see.
Page jumps make me actually angry. It's like a book snapping shut on you mid-sentence.

And yet... no links? Just a statement, and that merits modding up?
There is a wage gap, it comes up again and again, but the *reasons* are disputed.

Ah yes, all the convincing authority of an AC.
