  1. No, Kofi, you cant now shut up! on A Monroe Doctrine for the Internet · · Score: 2, Insightful

    In a word- No

The kind of control the other nations wants is control of content. Already the Chinese put up firewalls
and the french ban things they dont like could you imagine if these countries got control of the internet?
You see the nations behind this China, France, Cuba, Syria, South Africa, Brazil. With the exception of Brazil all of these nations are the epitomy of either tyranny or Politically correct ideologies.

While I would prefer an affirmative statement in favor of freedom of speech, I will settle for benign neglect.

Once broadband reaches 25mbps there is no reason for a separate tv connection.
The tv networks will become what UPN has already a dumping ground for
tv viewers who are Old and poor.

The networks however have a saving grace, they can still outcompete
itunes. People will happily accept commercials in their tv programs
if they get the programs for FREE...history has already proven this.

There is no technical reason people cant simply download their favorite
programs and watch them with commericals for free or commerical free
    for an additional fee.

This would actually free up networks ro produce programs audiences wanted
instead of programs affiliates wanted...programs that could be targeted
to niche audiences rather than lowest common denominator.

However instead of being kneejerk on the issue why dont

What if new relases were $1.49 for the first couple months
then dropped to 99 cents and classics(songs older than 5 years old)

This is not an aquisition to create a new internet behemoth, this is cannibalism. This is microsoft eating AOL getting its list of technophobes and little old grannies. Its Time Warner dumping AOL for as much money as it can get. The only worrysome part is Microsoft getting control of Netscape. I suspect we can get the feds to force Microsoft to sell off Netscapes trademarks and assets as a condition of sale and that SHOULD be Mozillas stand on the issue.

  9. Government agencies copyrighting public documents? on NYC & SF iPod Subway Map Controversy · · Score: 2, Informative

Anyone else have a problem with this?

Im surprised the first amendment hasnt been invoked
on this. The first amendment clearly supersedes copyright
in the case of publications of a government owned entity.

Allowing the government to copyright government documents
would make the public records laws meaningless because you
    couldnt disseminate them yourself.

Now the government could say "You are not allowed to sell government
publications for profit, but you may freely distribute them and recoup
the cost of publication." under the commerce clause.

We are not talking about a patent or an individuals copyright we are talking
about a government publication made freely available to anyone who asks
simply being redistributed in a more convenient form by a private citizen.

Bellsouth is a BIG company they think strategically not tactically. The most economical thing for them right now is simply restore their phone lines and their fiber networks. when they roll something out they do it en mass. They will be deploying 25mpbs service to all their customers within 3 years to provide both tv, phone service, and DSL over the same line.

As for Napoleon III we DID Care... in 1863 however we were a little busy with something called the American Civil War. A mere year and half after the civil war ended, Napoleons little puppet was executed.
