I think laptops are grossly over powerful for children's needs (I'm not talking about watching DVDs or playing 3D games). I wish we could mass produce 80's style home computers (ZX Spectrum, C64, Color Genie etc). Very light weight, easy to tinker with and learn, and infinite fun..
1. India is self sufficient in food. In fact, we export lots of food and provide free food to many neighboring countries for humanitarian reasons.
2. "starting to be recognized?" - Wake up and smell the coffee..
I moved back to India last year after spending 10 years in the US. I found that the cab drivers here have better mobile phones than most people in the US. I guess it has to do with monopolies and regulations..
I lived in Orlando for 5 years. I got best spots near Titusville along US-1. Early morning launches are very spectacular. Worth the wait even if sometime the launches get scrapped. I've been there 9 times to see 3 take offs. But each one was amazing.

I believe they learn more or less like neural nets. I have a two year old son and quite recently I was doing a project involving ANNs. I could see striking similarities between how he was learning new things and training a neural net. It may also explain why it is difficult for adults to pick up new languages since the whole neural net has to be "retrained" which is a laborious and time consuming process.
You would be surprised how many people in India have newer mobile phones. Earlier this year when I was in India, I rented a fairly advanced cell phone, with mms and all that, which I used routinely to connect to Internet at >64Kbps. To my astonishment, the taxi driver had the same exact model. I feel that the newer models get born in Japan/SE Asia and make their way around the globe and finally reach the States.
Should also have an eye tracking system to show the images from any angle, which might not be possible since you need a 3D model.. Also, what if more than one person sees through the window?
I think this idea will work well for their google search appliance, if not for the internet. Imagine SOAP enabling the local google search engine. Now you can add search capabilities from any of the enterprise application (no matter what o/s, language) by connecting to the search appliance. That would be wonderful!
Good job UCF! I was in the programming team a few years back and we finished 6th in regionals. I think all of our teams finished top 10 that year. I was the only grad student in the team, but it was a nice learning experience. I hope these achievements show up in the university rankings. Way to go Dr.Orooji!!
Most often users frustration is vented on the keyboard (http://lap.umd.edu/Computer_Rage/). Maybe we would see people getting hurt banging on desks or dashboard..
This is somewhat analogous this: I go to a grocery shop and ask for Zuccarini instead of Zucchini. Suddenly I get bombarded by hundreds of golf balls, cricket balls and soccer balls.
Now I have an option to throw back the balls at him, however unfortunately it is not possible on the internet. Hence I welcome FTCs decision.
I first read it as "Blue Crab Nonsense to Fight Terrorism"

EWD: Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes
That is very true. I have had voip calls with my friend when he was in-flight on Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Chennai. The call quality was great.

My first computer was a Color Genie. I loved it!!
I already get 4Mbps downstream from Time Warner of San Diego and it is plenty!

Darn! Wish I could say that to my manager!!

Here is a good intro: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/blu-ray.htm/
Years ago, I wrote a flight sim type application using Embedded Tk (in C) and OpenGL. Tcl was very handy to build a decent GUI very rapidly.
Weightlessness would have psychological and physiological effects on humans: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/SP-4026/ noord28.html I wonder how these effects can be incorporated in the results of this experiment.
but what are they going to DO for 500 days?? There would probably be no experiments to run in the mock capsule..
Would be helpful for this http://www.confluence.org/

When I went from my Color Genie (Z-80) to a 4.77 MHz (with a Turbo switch at 8MHz), I thought it was wicked cool :)
(such as Lupus and MS). :)
Yes. I'm immune to Microsoft
