Its good to see this even if I dont need them. One of the biggest problems that I have had with FreeBSD is the X stuff. I just got 4.7 and finally have my work machine running X with an ATI Radeon VE.
I really think the BSD boxes will do a lot better out there if ppl could get X running quickly. Ports just rule and its fairly secure and very stable - big pluses to the OS. After I got X to run on my work box, 15 mins later I had mozilla, slypheed, and openoffice up and running, using ports of course. BOOM - I "could" pretty much just used BSD for work now.
I am in the process of learning BSD well enough so we can use it in the NOC when mgmt doesn't want to spend 1000 for an OS on an older box just to put up an FTP server or DNS etc... We are basically a MS house now.
But, It sucks when your in the middle of setting up user accounts or messing with ports or some other activity and have to reboot becuase the boss just called and wants you to check out such and such web site and look at the email he sent to you... Stop what your doing and reboot.
And the way the suits are complaining about MS license process around here now - this might help alot to be able to have options - when they ask "Well what else can we do......"
"Ralsky said he doesn't send offers for pornography or any messages to people who indicate they don't want them."
I guess that the above statement "could" be legit - but I bet it's more bullshit than anything else and I HOPE that Verzion does get the $37M out of him and shut him down.
43 spam emails a day minus ONE. 42 more to go...
Hey spammers - I would like for you to please carefully read the above link for your pleasure.
This sort of stuff is neat - but it also makes you want to go eh?? WTF??
I know, I know - its just a little game to see if they could do it. But geesh - I see this stuff in the OFFICE all the time. Some of the devs do stuff in java, some in VB, some in perl etc... What I hate to see is when someone is so wrapped up in VB, or java, or any language that they WILL NOT write anything in any other code.
A few of the VB guys, they push it to the extreme, and are zelots about it. Sometimes I actually think they believe they are making the world a better place because they write in VB....
This is cool, but man, it happens all the time and not always for the right reasons.
"It's illegal," she said, "and they're going to get a lot of publicity for it."
That may have been the point. "It's a tremendous opportunity," Ms. Lacter said, "for us to build brand awareness."
I'm going to make up some plastic decals for a LAN party that I would like to have and plaster them on the subway car doors and signs etc... And I would be ARRESTED for doing it. This kind of hand slap crap only happens when you have money and power. Period. Pisses me off. This is the way everything in this whole country is run and everyone just shrugs it off. bull shit.
"Keeping it cool - The development of Cray cooling technology allowed each technology
generation to increase the circuit board density.
"Someone (perhaps Gary
Smaby? I truly don't remember) once said that Cray Research was primarily a refrigerator company."
Cray-1: Single sided boards clamped to copper plates placed in aluminium
racks that had cooling fluid in tubes.
XMP: Double side sandwich boards clamped to twin copper plates placed in
aluminium racks which had cooling fluid in tubes.
Cray-2,3,4: Immersion cooling. The CPU and memory boards sat in a bath of
electrically inert cooling fluid.
YMP, C90, T3d LC, T3e MC: Double-sided circuit boards clamped to hollow
aluminium boards in which the cooling fluid circulated.
El,J90,T3eAC,SV-1: Blown air cooling.
T90: Immersion cooling. The CPU and memory boards sat in a bath of
electrically inert cooling fluid."
I was up close and personal with an older Cray once - it was basically a tower of CPUs and very very short cables - and a whole bunch of cooling "units" srounding it. They were built into something like bench seats - the tech that was showing us around said they put those in so the guys could sit down and rest once in a while in peace:).
We have about 12 TB and about 45 servers that we maintain in the DC. We have one guy that does data loads and backups.
The backups takes about 1/2 of his time. We have a backup guy for him but hs is only used when the other is away.
We do both tape and "DR" types of backups. We are testing a system right now from Avamar that does snapups, etc... and is a disk to disk system - pretty fast and works good for semi static data. Might want to check them out - www.avamar.com. If you got the cash to build a good backup system - it really should only take about a half a person to maintain it.
Come on - where else can you get a computer that MOOOOOS at you when you turn it on. How cool is that!
Actually that was a good question - and yes you can order it with no office suite. BUT it doesn't cost any less. A better question is why can't I order it without an OS.
So Gateway will sell 10 billion machines or so without MS office on them - Bill is still getting his $99 per machine for the OS...
I would like to hear your thoughts on the Tablet PC/Web Tablet that you are making. The ProGear box.
How big do you think that these will be in the industry? Do you think that they will be just another PDA type of device or something more?
Can you see them being used for things other than the obvious? I think that they will be great for health care and education type applications. But are they going to be able to make it mainstream?
Are you going to make a more PC like version of this (similar to the Fujitsu model)? I've seen the accessories and they are getting you close to having a desktop - but the word appliance scares me away a little.
And when will the prices start to drop?:)
I have a desktop, a handheld, and a notebook. Do you see the Tablet PC replacing any or all of these? I really like the fact that you power it on and its up and running (like my Ipaq). Do you see that feature as the most promising one for these devices?
This is soooo true. I read slashdot more that day than I watched the news.
And there is one good reason why - it was real. The news on TV is almost fake in a way. It's just to filtered - relative to a firewall - you only see what they want you to... I remember reading stories on/. about people who were at the towers just days before and people who had friends who worked there and some from people outside the US who had a very different view on things. Some of it really tore me up. Well most of it did - but/. put it in a different light.
I think that the way of the future news wise will be growing more with IRC and sites like/. that don't fluff it up or screw it up like the big stations do.
You are very correct. But instead of calling a Mid-level manager at IBM (hehehe good luck). He might want to drop by his local IBM authorized dealer and kind of ask if they have any bios update disks for that lap. I would bet that they would and they might just make a copy for him.
There is still the matter of wiping the disk - but he should be able to do that before the writing the bios info back to the disk...
I bet that they would put your grandfather's name on the sign that describes it and such... Not to be cold, and very sorry for your loss, but it would kind of immortalize him in a little way.
It is a pretty good site and they have a lot of people on that site that do the question answer stuff. And some really good articles written by the staff on all sorts of things techie.
This is a good point - BUT - just like the lead thread stated. When ppl know something - they won't change. How may Windows users have a 3 button mouse??? It sucks - but it is hard to convert.
I think that the best way to promote Linux and *BSD is thru the schools and colleges. Get them used to it when they are young.
Big companies like this that are at least looking at Linux is a "good thing". But the open source community should be working with local schools and colleges to help where ever they can. That would get it out there in the wild like it should be.
Dell is using the same parts that the retailers use to make the PC's. Dell doesn't actually "make" anything that is in their boxes - including the servers. Wonder what's going to make a smaller retailer sale a Dell as opposed to making it themselves and making more money off of it? And for the larger ones they can make more money off of a lesser known white box maker than Dell. And it would be no different PC wise.
Oh and I can't wait to see the new doooood commercial showing him walking into WalMart... YEA!
Where I work they put in a gym in the main building with all kinds of wieght eq and tread mills etc...
That was about a year ago. You can join for 15 bucks a month, and they will take it right out of your pay check.
I thought sweet!! So I joined as soon as it opened.
I have never been in the place... I know that sounds sad - but I'm the network engineer here and pretty much work 10 hours + a day. And I try and keep weekends for the family. I do a little fishing and golf now and then but thats about it.
If you really want to get in shape - MAKE THE TIME. Go for a walk every day - do pushups/situps - work out - buy video tapes, its doesn't have to cost much at all. But you have to make the time for it...
I get exercise from lifting servers into the rack and twisting a screwdriver - I can crush your skull with my hands - but I couldn't run to the end of the parking lot - I just don't make the time and I'm kinda lazy about the hole exercise thing:)
I can understand your thoughts regarding CB and anime in general. You apparently don't care for it and that's fine. I really like anime. But that's me.
If your generalizing CB to "not too unlike most anime..." then you don't really follow anime. That would be like saying Heinlein and Clark write about the same stuff...
What I don't understand is why this was modded up.
Nothing personal, this is not a troll either. But really, who cares that much if you like Cowboy Bebop or not. This was a post about a movie that is coming out based on a cartoon. You gotta love that if you love the cartoon.
I'm a hardware guy and I usually just skim over the software/development related stuff on this site. I have posted to some of the software stuff - trying to be funny and pick on the coders a bit:) But I never see stuff modded up if is it basically just a personal opinion. Sorry just picking again I guess.
But, I'm 36 years old and I'll be there in the theater seeing this one on the big screen. I think that its a good idea and will be interested to see how it works out - just my opinion tho... w00t
Did you guys ask him yet? I think that it would be neat to talk to him and see what drove him into the world of computers so heavy when every one else was still doing pen & paper.
Disclaimer: Nothing wild here - no technology involved at all...
That said - egads man. You have 6 people over for ONE weekend and you're worried about how to entertain them. Good lord - quit writing so much code and get out once in a while. I bet that there are several great places to take them within driving distance of your house.
Railroad museums, local historical places, local businesses that are semi-famous usually have tours that they give, parks and state forests, very good local restaurants, and on and on and on...
Why does everyone always have to GO AWAY when people come in for a visit. We always have a BIG BBQ/picnic and tons of stuff for the kids to do. And we always take them to at least one local attraction and they have a blast. I have seen several local "tourist" spots in my area quite a few times. But I still enjoy going to them and I can always add some neat bit of info about the place or local legend stuff etc...
Its fun and not too costly. And I sure that's a big factor with you Mr. Rice Burner Sucks... Just gotta pay for that Harley man....... Hehehe...
I'm not - really (I know its hard for you cut and paste geeks to think that....:).
I am a hardware/networking guy. That said. I think that code sucks so bad because all I ever do is THROW hardware at servers to make them faster - and I can do that...
I know that this doesn't really make sense to a programmer - but when they write code and install it on a box - the complain to me that it's not fast enough. You need more proc's - you need more RAM - you need 2 nics - etc...
I really think that people should write code on a 386 - then it would work great and run like the wind. Programmers ALWAYS have the fastest machines in the house, always. And I don't think that it should be that way.
Like I said - I don't write code - so I could be talking out my ass here - but if you guys did have "specs" for writing "good" code and did it on hardware that was about 5 years old - we wouldn't have any problems.
Now this isn't geared towards home systems - people at home want it all - but server systems is where this needs to be addressed.
I know that the "standards" (if there are any) for writing good code are pretty loose and there are very few of them - and getting this end of it fixed up would help a lot. But I think that it would be hard to do when there is 7000 languages out there to choose from.
Not to be a dick - but RFC 1925 #(12) "In protocol design, perfection has been reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." is the way that programmers should write code. And if you did it on old slow hardware - you would have to.
Come on... M$ has pressured people into going out of business. I bet they could dream up some law suit against RH very quickly if they wanted to.
I sort of seen this as a conversion tactic for RH - I think that it would be good advertisment for them at the very least and might actually get Windows users over to the Linux camp. And they would make more money in the long run...
I guess that it is just me - because no one else sees this as a good idea. If I was a RH marketing droid - this would have been on the list of things to do - close to the top...
"article claiming that Microsoft argues that were they to provide any greater technical detail about protocols and APIs....."
Yea right - IANAP so I'm not sure about their API's - but as far as protocols go - they wouldn't want to release details about them because they would be embarrassed about how BLOATED the code is. Come on - it's only taken them about 4 years to get TCP/IP right - wonder how the rest of it looks...
RFC 1925 - "(12) In protocol design, perfection has been reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." I know that its funny - but this RFC is really very true.
um nothing personal. BUT. The exact reasons that your stating for not enjoying your job much is just such reason why you had a job.
Like it or not - we have all done it - you have to baby sit your users. And they are the MOST important thing on your network.
Things like viruses scare people and scared people do stupid shit - but - Where would you be with out users.....
Don't take this as trollish or anything - but you might want to try and relax a little at work - realize that it's just a job and spend a bit more time educating your users and less time putting out fires.
I have worked for some pretty stupid people myself in the past - hell I am right now - but if you look at it correctly - that's half the fun.
