LOL. Is that a joke? Even the current version of Office is a lot more powerful than OpenOffice. No, Office 2007 being delayed is NOT going to make anyone turn to openoffice.org. It's a nice product for the average user, but its not a serious competitor by any stretch of the imagination.
It's mostly radio shows - my University blocked far more than this, and my employer blocks even more. Just because they deal with political issues don't make those websites sources of political information. I've never heard a well balanced intelligent opinion from any talk radio host. It's always extremely liberal, or extremely conservative, or extremely something else.
Of course, everybody has the right to listen to this stuff, and read their websites, which is why any citizen can view them from their own home, internet cafes, libraries etc.
The soldiers, however, are employees and they're not there to listen to political rhetoric or read some guy's nonsensical opinion. Sure, there is some hypocrisy with Bill O' Reilly's site being OK and others being blocked, but this isn't anything new. This was going on in WW2, Vietnam, and any conflict during any time there was an operating press.
Do you think during WW2 US soldiers would have been allowed to read pro Hitler papers while operating in France? It's not a freedom of speech issue either. If you have soldiers doubting themselves, doubting their role in Iraq, because they read liberal, or anti war material (which lets face it, is just as much propaganda as the pro war stuff), then they're not going to be fully committed to their jobs. A soldier who's not fully committed to what he's doing and has doubts about whether he should be there or not is probably going to do something stupid that gets himself killed, along with a few of his buddies.
Nothing to do with freedome of speech - they're rules and regulations the army have had for decades and will continue to have. There's plenty of political information around for a soldier to form his own well balanced opinion. It's perfectly understandable that they dont' want their soldiers listening to propaganda (whether its true or not) that will adversely affect how they feel about their job.
I really doubt Groening was involved in this, if so, why doesn't everything look British. The left hand drive and Chief Wiggum is a slim English Bobby!
But where is Google getting the money for all these cool projects? This one sounds like they're going to need a LOT of server space....and a lot of money
Oh absolutely, its clearly better, and cheaper. But what they're afraid of is, once they do that, they are giving people what they want, but they're also giving the pirates easier access to perfect digital copies. At the moment pirates usually have to wait for DVD before distributing good copies - new cinema releases are usually camcorder jobs. It's an understandable fear, and has nothing to do with corporate greed, like many misinformed slashdotters like to think. It's easier to the shift the blame to them. Personally, I wish digital distribution would hurry up and come, because as a movie fan, its clearly better for me, and consumers, and in the end will be cheaper.
However, its the movie companies fear of pirating that's holding this back so long.
The solution: Eliminate the fear of pirating.
How: I don't know. The free distribution model is only a solution to the narrow minded people who think Karl Marx had a point - it clearly doesn't work. We see digital music distributed legally on the net, but that hasn't stopped piracy. What can?
Is there a solution? Is there a way for people to make money on the entertainment they produce, without fear of it being stolen all the time? The kiddies usual response is "If you made better movies I'd pay for them and wouldn't download them" which is so laughably ridiculous.
Personally, I think this will all end in jail terms. There is no technical way to stop a piracy, so governments will be lobbied more and more to put more and more pressure on the people who commit piracy, and on the wonderful technologies that are being abused to help distribute it. That's the only "solution" that I see, unless we, as a group of intelligent, technical minded people can find another way.
Nobody is mentioning the obvious reason (obvious, at least, to smart people) why there's region coding. It's directly related to cinema releases. The reason movies are released at different times in different territories because a single film print that one theatre shows costs approximately $10,000 to print. They're not cheap, and on average they're shown for a few weeks before they're pulled from cinemas.
Therefore, depending on anticipated audience numbers, a certain number of prints are made up for American cinemas. It then gets its month or two in cinemas, before the prints are returned to the distributor, and shipped off to other territories where the whole process begins again.
It's not greed, its a sensible cost saving measure to prevent wasting millions of dollars on prints that will only be used a few weeks, even if the movie is a mega hit (which is only a small percentage of released films). It's not just Hollywood that follows this example, its every distribution company in the world.
Therefore, when it comes to DVDs, they have to be region encoded because the above distribution method can take a year. You might argue, why shouldn't people be allowed to own a DVD before the movie is released to theatres, and maybe they should, but then theatres would start to go out of business. Maybe, that's the way the industry is headed, but for now, put up or shut up, and don't criticise an industry when you don't understand how or why it works.
I know this because I work in film.
I wouldn't say the internet was free of censorship, because nothing is, nothing can be. There is a lot of freedom here, but when people sign up to a company's website, especially if its free, they can never really expect much. They are shitty tactics though, and people should respond by taking their business (free or paying) elsewhere.
I submitted this story a few days ago, and linked to the original Wal-Mart story. Literally, 10 minutes later Wal-Mart had changed their recommendations to Friends.
I agree, a lot of them are, particular non medical hypnotherapists who at least in the UK, and as far as I know, the US also can practise without any kind qualifications. Most of them get a certificate or two from a hypnotist Guild to look good in their ad, and that's it. There's a lot of Marvin Monroe's out there, but that's not the fault of hypnotism.. it's simply a lack of understanding with the law makers who have made it easy for people like this to propogate and con people out of money, who are believing they are getting some kind of medically sanctioned psychiatric treatment.
They dont' have to use subliminal messages, when the good old fashioned brute force messages work just as well. Most people are dumb, and don't understand simple marketing techniques.
Most commercials follow a basic pattern.. make you feel bad about something... show you the product, show some people feeling GREAT about it.. you want it. The health and beauty range is one of the biggest offenders...
Show a woman with bad teeth, no boyfriend...uh oh.. women recognise this, and their brains make the link... TRY WONDER WHITE!! Now images of a hot young babe with a young millionaire on her arm.
It also works for men's shavers.. Show a guy getting cuts and nicks from his current razor.. you're reminded of that ONE time you nicked yourself shaving... show a guy with GILETTE and he's happy, the blade is gliding over his face... a gorgeous woman touches him and they kiss.. Gilette The Best A Man Can Get...
Rest easy, marketing people will never need hypnosis or subliminal messages to sell you stuff. As long as people have the stupid gene (and yes that includes you and I who all have bought products for equally stupid reasons), companies will make money. Is it their fault. Hell no. Its ours, but at least I'm aware of it. Now anyone want to finance my business idea... it's an amazing new product and after you use it women will find you IRRESISTABLE!
The language of that posting presupposes that hypnosis was not accepted previously, which in effect is a form of hypnosis! The poster is poorly informed, its been around for a long time, has been accepted by many in the medical, sports and psychiatry fields, with fairly easily testable ideas.
Hypnosis might have a negative reputation if you buy the movie "mind control" version, which has nothing to do with reality, and shame on anyone who even thought it was. It has long been a testable theory, and research has shown that every 90 minutes or so the brain goes into a slightly hypnotic state, daydreaming if you will. This is a natural process of the brain. It's still not known how or why this happens, but the effect has been known for a long time.
It's a very weird thing to demonstrate to someone who's long held the negative "its' a crock of shit" view based on what they've seen on movies or in stage hypnosis.
I'll give you an example of something that a psychotherapist (long story) did for me. When you get into that relaxed state, that's not quite as relaxed as sleeping, but its still a very numb relaxing pleasant feeling, the hypnotist "tests" your state in numerous ways. The most popular one is telling you your eyes are glued shut and no matter how hard you try you cannot open them... then a few minutes later asks you to try, but you will not be able. Every time this happens to me, I *KNOW* I can open my eyes, I'm fucking positive about it, I *KNOW* they're not glued shut, I *KNOW* the hypnotist is a lying bastard, full of shit.. but you know what... I don't wanna... I like them shut. It's difficult to explain, but you just find yourself wanting to go along with fun little things like that.
That's a crude little insight into what a hypnotic state feels like and the level of "control" anyone has over you. Try it yourself, you dont have to believe in it. If anything, its just a great way of relaxation. I use it at night as a cure for insomnia. A guided session helps me get to sleep within about 10 minutes. You might argue that this is just the power of suggestion, or the placebo effect... but that's exactly what's its meant to be.
I also make my own mp3's depending on what I'm looking for.. If preparing for a job interview I run through the interview over and over again in a hypnotic state. It's a great way of mental rehearsing something. Better than just doing it in front of a mirror....
Hey that's cool, and what's also cool is an anti-pirate article on slashdot. I almost spat out my coffee I was so surprised.

lol.
For the /. editors everything is okay unless MS, Sony, or the Music Industry do it.
He never mentioned Godwin's Law. Who cares about Godwin, bringing up Hitler in a completely unrelated discussion is a stupid thing to do to. Period.
Ah, comparing something to Nancy Drew mysteries, the perfect way to a geek's heart.

Lets not turn to religious texts to define our laws.

Shiiiiiit
Why is there a link to a definition of IQ... Do you think we may not know what it means? Will this pointless linking madness never end?
Well said, If I still had my points I'd mod you up.

Hey, I thought it was a dupe too... until I read the article.. oh doh! :)
People will freely distribute Celine Dion songs without any fear of retribution.
Since, your football is boring, and our Dr. Who is badly written childish tripe.
Just wondering...
You completely missed the point of what I said.. you CAN control your own body, you just don't WANT to. There's a big difference.

I know, its terrible. People can't commit murders now without being tracked by the police straight away. What has the world come to!
