  4. Here's a thought on How Would You Define a Planet? · · Score: 1
How about a formula based on the ratio of the mass of the star to the planet?

This would only be marginally useful in our own solar system, but as we discover more and more planets around other star systems we can have a mathematical basis in which to designate an object a planet or just some orbiting crap, plus it instantly give a relationship to our own.

    The sun:earth ratio is 333,000:1

Make that the S:E ratio (for arguments sake).

    Jupiter (I think) is 33,000:1

You could call that a deci-SE etc (obviously better terminology needs to be used) We compare the gravity of other planets to Earth's (g) so we can always use the Sun:Earth ratio as a gauge for all other planet discoveries

  11. Hmm.. something doesn't add up on RIAA Says P2P Encourages Illegal Downloads · · Score: 0

For every legal P2P download there are a gazillion illegal downloads. This isn't an attack on the technology, which anyone can see, but on the people who are using it. It's a fine protocol, whether it be Bittorrent or some other system, but it's just not being used for the way in which it's supporters claim it's being used for. Clicking on any random torrent site and spending some time searching through the categories I had a lot of difficulty finding any legal torrents. There was some abandonware whose legality I'm unsure and I only found legal patches after explicitly searching for it, but then all of those I saw were available at the games companies own website. I know all forms of P2P have their legitimate uses but it's rarely being used for it. The VAST majority of what I see are Movies, Apps, Games, TV shows and Music and increasingly - ebooks. Now, with the exception of TV shows for foreign viewers I can see no real justification in downloading these. The one I hear a lot is "it's a crap program\movie\song why should I pay for it". Well, if it's a crap program\movie\song why are you even bothering with it? Plus, the various industries have provided plenty of oppurtunity to freely and legally judge if something is worth buying Movies have a gazillion trailers, previews, reviews. Plus everyone knows someone either in RL or online who's seen a movie and can tell them if it's worth watching or not. Games in most cases have demos Apps in many cases have demos or trials, which can show even a moron what it's capability have. Music has free online samples, and a gazillion radio stations worldwide in which to listen to tracks. There are no justifications in this day and age for illegal downloads other than "wanting something for nothing". Justifying it any other way is pointless. Now since, most P2P is used for exactly that purpose, then why are we geeks on /. kicking up a fuss when the governing bodies do what anyone in their position would do and make measures to protect their own. The RIAA, MPAA, etc are NOT attacking anyone's rights or attacking the technology used... so this has nothing to do with anyone's "right's online", because no-one has the right to break the law anyway. So, they're attacking the people who are breaking it. If we don't want the RIAA to attack P2P then we, ourselves as a group need to make sure that nobody is abusing the wonderful technology. Of course, if we could achieve that P2P use would drop to practically nothing. I certainly don't find it very efficient for getting Linux distros, patches, drivers etc. What a pain in the ass that would be, when you can just use the numerous ftp\http servers!

  12. Oh yes on Controlling Hurricanes? · · Score: 1

Considering the amount of people that die from Hurricanes every year then it's definitely worth trying.

From my understanding hurricanes only occur when a dozen or so meteorological conditions are "perfect". It should not be impossible to affect enough of these to ensure the hurricane never happens, or it's strength is vastly reduced.

  15. Isn't it obvious on King Kong vs. Movie Pirates · · Score: 1

"Why are they suing bitorrent users then?"

Well, because they're still downloading\stealing a product for which they aren't paying for.

A young shoplifter who steals the odd DVD from a store isn't a major threat to the business but that doesn't mean they're not going to call the police and prosecute. I worked for a store once that prosecuted any shoplifter whether they stole goods worth 99p or £99.

If anyone steals from a company they have every right to sue, both legally and morally. Music and films are available for cheap legal download these days. There's no excuse for stealing them now, except to get "something for nothing". It's not about free speech or any of that crap. Nor has it anything to do with the fact that "if hollywood made better movies we wouldn't steal them". More nonsense. Sue the lot of them

    And rightly so.

  16. Excuses Excuses on How Battlestar Galactica Killed TV · · Score: -1, Redundant

This just sounds like yet another lame excuse to justify piracy. For every positive outcome of piracy\theft there are far more negative outcomes. It's so completely obvious, so it still amazes me that people are happy to support piracy and intellectual property theft and try to justify it to themselves that they are doing something good for the industry. They're not. They just want something for nothing, like all thieves.

David Benioff is a fantastic writer. Sure, Troy wasn't the Orgasmotron you were conditioned by the hype to believe it would be, but it was a thoroughly decent flick.

However, Benioff earned his credits with THE 25th HOUR, a perfect screenplay adapted from his own book. It became Spike Lee's greatest movie in years. Judging by that book and script I have the utmost confidence in whatever he writes. He's a writer to look out for.
