Thanks for explaining your reasons. I also dislike being foed with no explanation.

My view is simply this: I should be allowed to do whatever I want to with my computer with no limitations except one. That limitation is to make sure that I am not negatively impacting anyone else. This is why I choose to use FOSS over proprietary software. I'm less interested in the political and philosophical squabbles involved. At the end of the day, the computer is a tool for me to accomplish whatever task is important to me. There should be no financial barriers to those tasks. As long as FOSS consinutes to provide viable alternatives to proprietary commercial software, I will lean towards FOSS. The software itself doesn't matter, it's what you can do with it.

My original post was actually just meant to be a "conversation starter". (Read flamebait. :) ) I've actually read a lot of what RMS has written in the past, and I agree with most of it. There is no reason why we should be restricted from doing anything we want with our computers. We are not restricted in using hammers and nails (compilers and linkers) with wood that we purchased (the PC itself) and our own ideas written down as a diagram (source code) to make a useful object like a chair (software). So why apply artifical financial barriers to software? The businesses that rely on profit from software will always be there because there are always some people who don't want to build their own software (or furniture). FOSS is not a problem. The people who want to control what we do with comptuers are.

I'd have to agree. At home, I've replaced five PCs with one dual P II running RedHat 9. The remote desktop sessions are handled by GDM calling Xvnc instead of X. If I was given a dual core Opteron system, I could probably easily do at least 28 sessions without any of that extra hardware. The only thing required would be cheap thin clients for the users.

Speaking as a crazed liberal, I have to agree. I loved OS/2 Warp. I got it before Windows 95 came out and man was it sweet. It had the nicest looking GUI of the day just one notch below Mac OS. Win 3.1 blew chunks in the desktop department at the time. When Windows 95 came out, it felt like OS/2's retarded backwards hillbilly cousin. The main thing that killed my use of OS/2 was the lack of applications that I wanted (mostly games as I was a 20-something then).

As far as aGUI based alternative to Linux/BSD, check out ReactOS,/A>. They've made a good eal of progress and I think they will be what some people are looking for in a few years: a free Win32 alternative.

As a leftist, I'll say that I think the post isn't so much offensive as it is stupid. But the woman in the picture did, apparently, do this of her own accord, so it's not like it was a crime or anything. If it's even real, the woman is probably stupid. Same goes for the guy with the plunger. But I'll bet this is the scenario:

    1. Woman gets hired to have a degrading photo taken. She's only interested in the money.
    2. Guy gets hired to do the same.
    3. They are provided with an UNUSED plunger.
    4. Photo is posed for and taken.
    5. No one gets hurt other than two people making asses of themselves.
    6. They both get their paycheck in the mail and commit a real crime by spending it at WalMart.
    7. End of story.

So, even leftist me can agree that this is probably nothing more than a few jackasses producing a humor photo for a few jackasses.

  9. One of the greatest SciFi series on Daleks Return to Dr Who · · Score: 3, Interesting

With the possible exception of Sliders (which was still low rent compared to any season of Doctor Who), the Doctor Who series is one of the greatest science fiction series ever produced. They got it right from day one: the story comes first. Screw the special effects, the "ass kicking" or the quality of the acting and focus on what matters, a good story line. As a hero, the Doctor definitely has always been brains first and physical action as a last resort. It's not a wonder that this series is really good for children as well as adults. It's got a decent message.

I've been keeping up with Doctor Who 2005 via P2P since it probably will never air in the states. I have to say that Eccleston plays a really good turn at the Doctor. He definitely doesnt' try to imitate anyone else that came before him. Billie Piper isn't as annoying as I had feared either. I was worried that she'd just be cheesecake like Nicola Bryant. But she seems to play a decent companion that thinks for herself. They also did a really good job of making the new theme song. They still have a lot of the original Delia Derbyshire rendition (1st-4th Doctor) mixed in with the new stuff. Prodution values are much higher, probably owing to better technology than what was available even in the late 80s with Sylvester McCoy.

What I am surprised about is that I really haven't heard other people's opinions about the new series. I expected to hear lots of people either raving about it or potting it. But I've heard nothing. Hasn't anyone else on /. in the USA been doing the P2P thing to get hold of those shows? One more thing to mention... Apparently, the BBC is going to be releasing a DVD box set of this season in the fall. It will only be for Europe and the UK, so get out those region free DVD players or try out Xine if you're lucky enough to have a DVD drive that is reagion free. They will also be releasing the individual programs starting after the airing of this season's last episode.

If you can find it... enjoy. :)

But marriage is a celebration of love and has been extended outside of Christianity. Buhddists get married. Moonies get married. Pagans get married. They all do it to celebrate their love for one another. That is the key purpose of marriage. It says to the rest of society, "Person A loves Person B and Person B loves Person A". If marriage was specifically a religious concept, then that would mean all the atheists who are married should consider their marriages null and void. Obviously this is not the case. If marriage is meant to raise up the emotion of love, then it should be extended to all people who experience romantic love. Leave religion out of it.

Microsoft takes their Connectix acquisition (always remember to point to the fact that Microsoft didn't innovate, but purchased someone else's innovation) and forces their code monkeys to make it into a very easy to use and fairly impressive alternative to VMWare. They also make it cheaper. Over time, VMWare loses market share and eventually folds. Do you think MS would continue to support all the OSes they did before? I would say it's doubtful in light of how they suddenly dropped support for other hardware platforms like the PPC and Alpha with Win2K. Then with VMWare gone, what do you do when you need a commercial Virtual Machine solution? Me? I'm not bothered. I plan to use Xen to great effect when I finally get my dual Opteron box... :)

This pastor is a disgrace. The people who are opposed to gay marriage are actually very disturbed people who are in denial. They can't accept that two people of the same gender can experience love and commemorate that love in marriage. Here is is folks, the plain truth:

The love that two men or two women feel for each other is no different than the love that a heterosexual couple experiences. There is no difference at all. None. That same warm indescribably wonderful feeling that a hetero remembers (I'm straight, so I know what it feels like) feeling on their wedding day is no different from what a gay man or a lesbian woman would feel on their wedding day. But our sick society is trying to deny that love can be experienced outside of a heterosexual relationship. It makes them so uncomfortable that they cover their ears and scream loudly, "I'm not listening! I'm not listening! I'm not listening"!
