    Of all the reasons a US citizen should take action in the political realm trying to kiss the ass of foreign sentiment is the least useful.

    People make it seem like before the Bush administration the US was love and adored worldwide... and it's bullshit. The US has >ALWAYS taken shit from every "also ran" ex superpower and wanna be influential country. The only time people stop complaining about us or blaming us for something is when they need us to save their ass. Hell, even when their taking out aid a lot of countries still feel free to take potshots.

    It's a constant whine fest and long ago lost it's power to matter.

    Ah, the iPhone. I'll stick with my Treo - being as:

    1) I can run 3rd party software

    2) The network doesn't suck

    3) The email doesn't suck

    4) Cut & Paste

    5) No one has hacked my Treo :)

    As for iPod / Zune - I use a Zune because the screen is bigger, the interface is better, the software doesn't suck and the "all you can eat" music subscription is awesome.

    Microsoft's lawyers believe that the vouchers DO have the potential to put enough liability on MS to really fuck them up.

    Or C - that the whole thing is too much of a mess to deal with and they are wisely putting a stop to it because it is now pointless.

    Maybe because he is thinking and not just screaming for Microsofts blood in some fantasy world that he thinks will propel him to the top of the legal world?

    Groklaw has only really be semi-relevant for a long time because no lawyer with a bias that huge is a useful tool.

    If I provide link to SUSE download site and offer some support for installation and configuratoin to my friend am I conveing GNU/Linux?

    Its a brilliant way for the FSF to prove Microsofts point all along. The GPL is now so viral that no company will go anywhere near it if they care to protect their IP in any fashion.

    MS will simply say "see? We didn't even touch the CODE, just a coupon and they tried to bind us to the GPL... and your using their COMPILER? You must be crazy."

    But we all KNOW that the courts are always compleetely capble of making correct, informed decisions about technology matters. I mean, if there is one thing Slashdot stands for it's the absolute ability of the US legal system to tell us how the technology sector shoudl work.

    I know I'm not. I have no intention of paying $600 for a phone from a company that coudln;t figure out how to put CUT & PASTE on it or boasts about it's interner prowess but can't take a pheon call if I am surfing the web.

    Apparently having any sort of respect for yourself means your not Apples target market.

    Not only is the Groklaw argument lame (do they really think the millions MS spent on lawyers would overlook this?) but the very discussion works in Microsofts favor.

    This situation is putting the cap on the fear that when you try and do anything in a business developemnt context with GPl'd code it will bite you on the ass when some geeks get pissed off at you. I know at least three firms who were planning to develop services based on GPL'd code and get involved with the "FSF" communtiy who have backed away.

    These days, far from saving you legal hassles dealign with the GPL and the FSF is proving to be among the fastest ways to be bogged down in full on legal hassles.

    My Treo 700w works perfectly with Vista.It also...

    * syncs correcty with outlook (notes included)

    * voice dials

    * can be tethered to my laptop

    * runs software that I develop myself

    * manages to COPY and PASTE

    Unlike the iPhone.

    Your right, let me fix it. A comparable view would be not locking the doors or the windows because you have an alarm that would sound if they are opened.

    Still wrong. It's a lot more like...

    I have some locks on the windows and doors, but I am not worried about "bump keys" because what looks like a house is really jsut the garage and if you try and leave into the main house a giant robot beats you to deat with your own appendix.

    The message of the OSI is that "Open Source" has a specific meaning

    Playing bullshit games with the capitalization does not make the mark unique. The simple reality is that the terms "open source" were in common usage long before the OSI and the GPL and make sense with out their approval or butt kissing.

    The OSI wants to build a brand? Go for it. Give out "OSI Approved" stickers. Give out "Bruce likes it!" stickers or "Stallman Approved!" logis. Whatever... but tryign to use ommon terms int his way is just stupid.

    Yeah, but you knw the OSI will bow down and change their rules to allow the GPLV3 in. There is way too much RMS ass to kiss to ever defy him. Hence why the OSI idea as some sort of guarentee against legal issues is completely impotent.
