I've been interested in packet radio.. I was thinking more of something they could drive up and drop off that would work with COTS hardware/laptops... you could equip all the emergency vehicles with one so the network comes with you. I imagine with a Mini-ITX and a little experimentation, it could be VERY small and cheap to make ($1000/unit)
Creating ex-temp webs like this might assist insurance adjusters and other computer-needing personnel to work better in emergency hot zones... it would be nice if a company out there started manufacturing the "cans" for emergency use and the FCC made some modifications to the rules for emergency usage... so every little town could have a few "wi-fi" kits in storage to chain up when a hurricane has leveled everything.. you could also throw some authentication mechanisms on the idea and build a quick "emergency VoIP network" the same way.
Just a thought from the thoughtbrew:

I want to see various space mutual funds, of various "riskiness", attached to all these little companies... I'd like to put a few dollars on the line to further such concepts.

Many African Americans get left behind by cabbies avoiding "any black male" in certain parts of the city... By using this system, a caller would be able to signify whether they were actually *picked up* by their cab, and possibly assist in reprimanding cabbies that aren't doing their job... or pointing out (publically/online) which companies don't provide the necessary level of service. (By having a proxy website dispatch the calls)
Why not just put the RFID in a sticker on the inside of the clothes that you can peel off, or put it in the tag?.. something you can just remove.. or a little "pop-off" thing like those dye-markers.. so they can just pop the thing off at the counter.
You get your manufacture-to-counter-to-sale tracking, and your customers can be anonymous (assuming you don't actually log the RFID-to-CCinfo.
The temples/pogadas in Japan were designed to last a thousand years. In fact there was a special award/honor for the builder of a temple when their building was able to stand a thousand years.
All the math makes me brain spin, but it would be seriously cool to have a linux-based "navigator".. give it the current date and your position and find the nearest routes to Jupiter.
You know I wonder if this idea opens the thoughts for an interplantary positioning system (IPS)... in order to know where you get off, you'd have to know where you are.
There is Japanese tale of 47 Samurai (http://www.jon-schmid.com/japan1/Sengakuji.htm) who dishonored themselves to avenge the death of their master. By drinking and whoring and partying they made the assassin (the neighboring warlord) believe they were no threat, and so they were able to walk right in and kill the guy. They, having avenged their master's death, had to kill themselves afterwards to undo the dishonor.. making them heroes... in a sense.
Could not a really devout terrorist do the same too? Ordering pork (its not like they need to actually eat it), appearing anything BUT a terrorist,so as to infiltrate these security methods and commit some act?
ADDWHITELIST - add an email to a whitelist WHITELIST - list emails in whitelist REMOVEWHITELIST - remove email from whitelist
CLEANED - List of emails that fit in the whitelist QUARANTINED - List of emails not inthe whitelist.
There.. now you can just have whitelisted emails go into your normal mailbox, and then you can apply whatever filtering on the QUARANTINED list.. or just delete them all.
OR modify SMTP, you give someone a password and require all SENDs on SMTP to have a password
SEND father@...com [password] message .
So you can set up a password for each person, or for a group of people.
Is building some of these simple failsafes too hard?
Peroxide is used by many space programs to get ships off the ground. It is used as follows:
1. Take a big breasted brunette stripper. 2. Use peroxide to bleach hair to an unnatural blonde. 3. Use said stripper to wine and dine (and other fun activities) accountants into signing even LARGER checks... or to blackmail certain 2-4 stars in the Air Force. 4. Use checks to purchase great parties, fantastic houses, and fast cars. 5. Use left over peroxide and a catalyst to launch rocket... or use the left over change to buy a solid fuel rocket, or a hydrogen/oxygen rocket.
Now you understand the wonderful world of peroxide use in modern rocketry.

I worked for a company called America.Net (an ISP in Atlanta) during this time providing tech support for ours and other companiews, including UU.net customers. UUnet had a web page with a link to "network status" that was dynamicaaly generated.
As for "structured doc browser", when did Acrobat appear? Basically it looks like the patent is more for a table of contents with icons that jumps to specified text... what you get with Acrobat table of contents.
The day I can log in to a non-proprietary virtual network, and I can build my own software/avatars or create my own code to provide interactions, is the day I'll play one of those damn addictive things... I don't just want to play, I want to create little bot-avatars that can go do things for me.
Hellen Keller had a hard time describing life before language, check out her biography.. the moment she understood the hand-sign for water she described like waking from a dream.
Also, siblings and major upheavals can block out memories... our son could remember quite a bit of his very early childhood (he was signing from 18 months), but within 6 months of his sister being born - and having to deal with shared affection - he had blocked out everything. He isn't able to remember anything from the time before his sister... I guess to make his life easier "she was always here" in his mind now.
Talk to your wife's buddies, talk to your former boss, if someone says they're not looking to hire, you should ask "Is there one other company you know of that might need our help?" You are surrounded by a network of people, use it.
We'll be launching our network contact manager (peoplelinking) in a month or two as one way to visualize your contact network, keep track of callbacks, and other fun.
In the mean time, we've created a site where you can network with others like yourself using our data engine.
I never bought my wife an engagement ring. In fact, I was the first boyfriend she had that DIDN'T... we've been married 7 years, and I don't want to jinx it now!
My company has been developing a system based on a similar idea for some months.( http://www.bigattichouse.com/peoplelinking/ )
The current site shows a web-based network using our engine, but our current software is actually a visual modeller for use by not-for-profits to manage their membership, volunteers, wants and needs.

Damn.. you know I didn't even notice that!.. say, I'm willing to recognize my mistake ... why'd you *have* to post anonymous?
Moores is the # of transistors/processing power every 18 mos... you're looking at price per byte.
lets see what $100 gets you
$100/meg = 1985 10 meg
$50/meg = 1986.5 20 meg
$25/meg = 1988 40 meg
$12.5/meg = 1989.5 80 meg
$6.25/meg = 1991 160 meg
$3.13/meg = 1992.5 320 meg
$1.56/meg = 1994 640 meg
$0.78/meg = 1995.5 1.2 g
$0.39/meg = 1997 2.4 g
$0.19/meg = 1998.5 4.8 g
$0.09/meg = 2000 9.6 g
$0.04/meg = 2001.5 18.6g
$0.02/meg = 2003 37.2g
$0.01/meg = 2003.5 74.4g
Looks like the curve is a bit faster than every 18 mo... I think 12 months might be a better approximation of storage/cost.

The patent is for a UI that contains icons down the side that correspnd to content in another location.. so a set of frames with buttons in one frame, and content in another. You click a button, and navigate to another frame. Imagine the following code: Frame 1: Frame 2: : This framest would violate the patent, but probably exists in some old example of how to use FRAME tags. So search those online book repositories on FRAME development for examples of this behavior. I thought that this sort of thing was what frames were add for!
