Well, so was countless other paranoid individuals that were saying the same thing. But didn't have a podium.
Even i have been predicting this stuff ( and more which is in the works for coming to pass ) for the last 20 years or so, but that doesn't make me special. It just makes me right.
Nothing can stop someone from homebrewing a computer and running Minix or NetBSD on it.
Today, i agree. In 20 years, its quite possible that to get access to "general purpose components" to roll your own you have to be defense contractor. I can even see a point when OS code could be considered a "munition", or worse. ( don't laugh, not so long ago encryption code used to be considered this by the US government and its export was highly restricted )
At that point 'retro' hardware and that CDROM hidden in your attic with NetBSD source on it will worth its weight in gold and be virtually unobtainable to the average Joe.
And like you were saying if most people are 'stuck' with only having access to 'data appliances', the war is lost.
My foot. Sure, there are a few that know what they are doing and should be doing something more advanced ( and get paid for it ), but most that i have ever dealt with are buffoons and should be picking up trash instead.
Actually i think the LCD cost more than the computer, but i could be wrong. I do think a battery powered version was planned, but never happened. Most likely battery tech just wasn't up to it.
Handle? It was more of a marketing thing i bet, or just planning ahead for the never to be released battery version. However, with the plus ( no external power transformer ) it was a bit more practical to take to a friends house..
Never said distribution. Also, personally i don't care what the copyright holders want, just saying that in a lot of cases they are shooting themselves in the foot.
Would like to have a true "GUI IDE" Rad tool for python too. ( something like what wavemaker is to java, or ironspeed is to.net tho the latter isnt free ) While it may sound lazy, drag and drop interface creation and good remote debugging speeds development time, even for professionals.
I know if the software was 4 grand and i pirated it, they did NOT lose a sale. It might even lead to a commercial sale down the road as i could honestly recommend it to a client or co-worker.
That sort of situation should be accounted for and non-profit piracy should not be prosecuted.
Looks almost like a touch screen version of an Apple][C. Now THAT would have been cool in 1983, perhaps even cooler than the Mac which came out the next year.

Therefore a veto would not have been likely to prevent the bill from becoming law
Perhaps, but it would at least show he was willing to stand by his convictions and not waffle or back down just beacuse he was told to.
His inability to not appear to be a raving madman insured that his message would be lost to the masses.
If no one listens, who cares if you are right or wrong?
Bitten once again.
yes i know it was free, and its Google's right.. but it still shows that you cant trust something you don't have in your own grubby little hands.
Just stick GPS on every car and monitor all citizen movements. Then you will know when an 'unauthorized car' is in the wrong spot.
Oh, and you get to follow everyone around all the time and record them as a byproduct.. "Its for the kids" ya know.
And that attitude is why we are in this mess in the first place. You are all for it, as long as you are not inconvenienced.
No. All or nothing.
Too bad its only for a day.

And is quite effective.
Wont matter how good you might be, you are far too old to come back into a 'young persons' world after that long of a hiatus.
And no, not casting stones, i wouldn't try it either and im not quite as old.
But they will be damned hard to find, and will be lots of legal hoops to jump thru to get one, legally.

Ya i have and its the best we have so far, but the GUI builder 'extension' is a bit kludgey and still has an 'external' feel ( since it is :) )
I have seen a few other smaller projects but none seem ready for prime time. I just hope one is out there and i missing it.
Never said distribution. Also, personally i don't care what the copyright holders want, just saying that in a lot of cases they are shooting themselves in the foot.
Not to slight the work he is doing, but has anyone used gambas in any 'real' projects? I have seen lots of toy/pet projects but noting major.
So you use something like freebasic and let others who want those features use Gambas

Pen based touchscreens did exist. Atari had a pen based touch pad selling product for graphics in 84, and around 85 had a prototype PDA.
I'm sure Apple could have got the hardware together to make it work.
Now, how practical? That is another question.
Looks almost like a touch screen version of an Apple][C. Now THAT would have been cool in 1983, perhaps even cooler than the Mac which came out the next year.
Then the entire internet is. Or human communication in general. I guess the only solution is to ban communication between 2 or more private citizens.
Odd, i just bought a 5" 'tablet' from China for that price. Seems this has already been done.
What you want is to be a reasonable price point. Just being the bottom feeder isn't always a good goal.
