Sadly, if they subsidize your phone, they may actually incur legal liabilities of your actions.. For both parties it should be 100% separate. Just makes business ( and personal ) sense.
They will get paid off and the cost passed down to the consumer ( and the attorneys on BOTH sides get richer ). Like every other time something like this happens.
And this my friends, is how we lose our freedom and turn into a socialist ( or fascist ) society. People like you hand it to them on a silver platter, and to be honest, you disgust me.
I agree, I'm sure its minimal to read Xenix file formats for the data, but the risks of old components giving up the ghost are far to high. If it works now, just do it via serial port and be patient. Only if its in the process of dying would i take it apart.
As an aside, i find it an odd odd claim that the 'first multi user BBS' would be on a 8086... Considering i did it on an 8bit machine long before the ix86 was on the market, and on a VAX before that. ( and wasn't chicago's Z80 powered cbbs multi line at one point? ) Still, sounds like it is worthy of saving for the sake of history, but it's not as special as you might think....
Tools are dangerous, and if you buy a tool the risks are explained in the manual. You want 'safe' tools, shop around and pay more. OR choose average tools and keep your fingers out of the way like the rest of us do. ( this assumes no fundamental defects of course )
I don't see them being sold, for the same reason its about impossible to sell a DVD backup device. Few could afford the legal costs.
I also expect them to squelch the plans for them as 'forbidden knowledge' and if you are caught with that data, well, you go to jail as a terrorist or something.
You know they are just trying to beat out the free ones.. Once the free ones are gone they will target pay versions... then wipe them out and start charging.
If they didn't have procedures they would be crucified the first time a monkey came thru. But since they planned ahead and do, they get made fun of.
Just can't win.

As you mentioned, its happened before, it will happen again. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Our TV broadcasts have already spoken for us, and it wasn't a good message.
Is far better then the unknown.

Are like morals, they are relative.
Is a way of life, time to get over it and embrace it.
If you remove existing safety devices, then its your own dammed fault if you get hurt.
Sorry, but i don't have any sympathy for people that do stupid things then blame someone else.
Will see the same fate.
Well of course not. If it doesn't make Oracle money, it will be gone.

This will get over turned on appeals.

And it will end up being yet another 500 dollar device once it ships.

How about extend this question to firewalls..
Good luck with that one. The writers unions will be all over that.
Is that they produce crap. Not that there are new distribution channels.
Good luck finding something worth buying.
You forget, some people WANT the outcome most of us are trying to avoid. And those people DO learn from history, and human nature..
If they don't, their political career is over.
Sounds better in the media then ' we bilked you people out of lots of money last year.. and we want more this year"
Any politician will support the entity that contributes the most.
