If you think the candidates have a clue ( or care ) what their websites are running on, or could even understand it all you are sadly mistaken. I doubt they even know who is doing their web stuff, its all handled by their respective 'committees'.
I know he said linux in the question, but installing a minimal Freebsd box is much easier. And if he mostly cares about mono, does it really matter what OS its running on?
Technically yes, but by then would it still be legal? A lot of weird things may happen before then with 'machine rights', much as we are doing with animal rights now.

Besides all that, you'd be surprised at just how much works without needing any proprietary bits in your operating system at all. Before sticking in a gNewSense CD, the idea that I could run a totally, completely free operating system and still do what I need to do was just all theory to me.

While i dont know him personally, i know of a documented story where a guy was forced to give up a decretive silver bullet keychain signed by Mr Heston.
Even if i were to rent music, which i refuse to, when would i ever be able to listen to it? The only free time i have now for music is during my daily commute. No ipod, no listen..
Sure, it might be pretty and let you drag around windows and pop up menus at lightning speed, but its the applications that really matter on a day to day basis..
Without that underlying toolkit i don't see a point. And most the ones that actually matter are pretty bloated these days.

Its only optional if you don't want to run the software you just bought. If you *have* to run some special app, it might just become required.
Or later, to run that HSD approved "connection monitor" ( which would be called something like "security protector" ) to be allowed to connect to your ISP.
Sure you can legislate that you cant discriminate but if your employer or insurance company has access at all, they can just 'backdoor' you out the door.

That might be funny today, but think of all the animals we killed getting to where were are today in space.

Depends on where you live and what your areas dominate market is.
For some of us, our area is struggling. Others, are doing just fine.
If you have extra time, you want to stay in 'shape' so you might as well code and contribute.

Out of principle I don't use anything that is copy protected beyond a unique keycode, so i wouldn't have known.

Do they support TPM? If so, wouldn't they change every time you rebuild the VM?
