    If a project does not bend over and comply ( like the OpenSSH team, or OpenVPN for 2 easy examples ) does that mean it will be illegal to use said products?

    If so, thats one more step closer to 'authorized computers, operating systems and applications'...

    That part will be propsed at some point. Since its not 'trusted'.

    That evil OSS stuff could be used to 'circumvent something', but your trusted OS ( i.e. windows ) will be safe, and prevent you from doing 'bad things'..

    If you lower the bar far enough, and make most everyone criminal, You can pretty much take away everyone's rights.

    Once you are 'assumed' to be a criminal, just because you breathe ,then its easier to take things from you ( such as money ) and redistribute t to the 'victims'.

    As well as destroy other rights you had, such as privacy.

    1 - the parent poster brought bush into the discussion, not I. I merely commented on the fact that it was brought into a unrelated topic, due to the ' all worldly ills are Bush's fault' mentality of a sector of our population.

    2 - Mistakes do not make a lie. They are Mistakes.. ( not that i agree they were mistakes, but that isn't the point here )

    3 - If you get past your blindness, and attempt to honestly acknowledge the reasons for going to war, remember only ONE reason was the existence of WMD. There were other specific reasons spelled out, all of which were supported by the world community.

    You may not agree with the reasons, which is your right, but quit with picking out ONE reason and harping on it.. It only demonstrates how idiotic your argument against the war ( and the man ) is.

    There is no proof, at all, of the administration lying about anything.

    If you want to debate the concept of potentially bad intellegence reports, thats fine. However there are no facts that support the case for 'lies'. Personally i dont think the reports were bad either, that things changed *after* the reports were made.. but at least that topic would be a valid discussion.

    But more often then not, price will win out. As i suggested..( or we wouldnt even be here talking about it )

    First problem is that there is still a company that is using the code base for their product. Opening the code would really piss them off.

    Second, is i bet there is still microsoft code from the old days.. But perhaps they could take out those parts and leave enough to be useful? ( like the bsd camp when thru after the 'suit' and the resulting non functioning 'bsdlite' )

    The very first thing you do is make sure you have no live ports just 'laying around'. If you dont have a person at a desk, its jack gets unpatched. ( or turned off at the switch )

    Secondly, you tie MAC addresses to specific ports on your switches, to help prevent people moving around without your knowledge. It also slows down people from causally swapping their company owned PC with a personal laptop. However, unlike the good old days, it wont slow down those damned wifi boxes since they can clone mac addresses easily.. But its at least a start.

    But, in all seriousness, how 'open' are these things? Is it practical to convert it into some sort of cheap wifi terminal?

    Sure a PDA might be better suited, but this does have a keyboard.. and is pretty cheap.

    There have been too many distributions for sometime now. Its confusing and only breeds troubles and often causes people ( like myself, long ago went back to BSD where things 'just work' ) to go elsewhere, or get locked-in to one 'distribution'.

    While i will be laughed at I'm sure, if the idea 'common base' was ever truly adopted it would be a great boon to the linux world. ( yes, i know this has been tried a few times, and failed miserably .. it seems like in the linux world people cant get along and play together )

    That way you can still have your 'distribution flavors' but they would all be compatible at their core.

    I think it was more to get around the fact you could use one 'licensed seat' to access your application, but have 100's of people route thru that single seat. So they 'lose' revenue.

    This way they can stick you for 'expected load'.

    Remember too that once upon a time you were charged for use of that cpu TIME, not just a flat charge for access to it.. ( actually some of the big iron licenses is still based on a per cycle fee.. )
